1 Explanations and Comments JCR cutoffs Q1, D1 JourQual2.1 HB VWL 2013 AMS FEC_2012 category A main data source for this list is JCR (Journal Citation Reports, ISI web of knowledge) provided by Thomson Reuters, Ed both for the Science edition and the Social Science Edition. The Science edition has about 175 subject categories, the Social Science about 60 categories. We use the following categories from the SSCI (# of journals): Business (111); Business, Finance (91) ; Economics (333); Management (173) ; Political Science (157) ; Psychology Applied (76); Psychology, Multidisciplinary (129) ; Sociology (138) ; and from the Science edition: Operations Research&Management Science (79); Statistics&Probability (119) ; Mathematiscs applied (251), Mathematics, interdisciplinary applications (99). This yields a total number of 1756 journals to be considered. For each field (or "source") we rank all journals by Article Influence Score (see below for definition). Q1 is defined as the top quartile (25%) in each list, and D1 is the top decile (10%). Weighs are based on Combes and Linnemer (2010). We only use the top two categories here. There are 10 top (weight 1.0) and 25 A (weigth 0.6) journals. List compiled by the australian Mathematical Society for Statistics. Has 14 top (A*) and 29 A journals. List compiled by Univ. Tilburg for internal evaluation in Finance. However, this list is not publicly available, instead they publish this list: FEC-2012 has 22 top and 39 very good journals. category = 1 if a journal gets the best rating (e.g. D1, A+, 1.0, A*, top) in at least one "source" (i.e. JCR field, JourQual2.1, HB VWL 2013, AMS, FEC_2012). category = 2 otherwise. There are 155 Category 1 journals, 275 category 2 journals (for a total of 430 journals). Definitions Article Influence Eigenfactor Impact Factor (IF) The Article Influence determines the average influence of a journal's articles over the first five years after publication. It is calculated by dividing a journal s Eigenfactor Score by the number of articles in the journal, normalized as a fraction of all articles in all publications. This measure is roughly analogous to the 5-Year Journal Impact Factor in that it is a ratio of a journal s citation influence to the size of the journal s article contribution over a period of five years. The mean Article Influence Score is A score greater than 1.00 indicates that each article in the journal has above-average influence. A score less than 1.00 indicates that each article in the journal has below-average influence. The Eigenfactor Score calculation is based on the number of times articles from the journal published in the past five years have been cited in the JCR year, but it also considers which journals have contributed these citations so that highly cited journals will influence the network more than lesser cited journals. References from one article in a journal to another article from the same journal are removed, so that Eigenfactor Scores are not influenced by journal selfcitation. The journal Impact Factor is the average number of times articles from the journal published in the past two years have been cited in the JCR year. The Impact Factor is calculated by dividing the number of citations in the JCR year by the total number of articles published in the two previous years. An Impact Factor of 1.0 means that, on average, the articles published one or two year ago have been cited one time. An Impact Factor of 2.5 means that, on average, the articles published one or two year ago have been cited two and a half times. The citing works may be articles published in the same journal. Publications from other fields (physics, say) can be considered as Cat. 2 if they are D1 in their field according to the JCR measure used here.
