Marine Status of the Copernicus Marine service with MyOcean2 Pierre Bahurel, Mercator Ocean FP7 MyOcean2 coordinator Geneva, 16/01/2014
(1) Status of the Copernicus Marine service demonstrated by the EC/FP7 MyOcean2 project
The Copernicus Marine Service REANALYSES 10 to 45 years REAL-TIME Daily, hourly FORECAST 2 to 10 days ESSENTIAL MARINE VARIABLES CURRENTS TEMPERATURE SALINITY SEA ICE DISCOVER SEA LEVEL VIEW DOWNLOAD Open & Free SEA WIND BIOGEO CHEMISTRY
DISCOVER CATALOGUE SELECT, VIEW AND DOWNLOAD PRODUCTS TALK TO THE SERVICE DESK
MyOcean2 project - April 2012 /Sept partners, 28 countries A core group of 14 commited operators Partners from all maritime EU member states
Securing production & service at a pan-european level SPACE DATA DATA REQUIREMENT TABLE COMPUTING One stop shop service Every month: requests 1,1 Tbytes of downloaded data IN SITU DATA v0 v1 v2 v3 v4 Relialibility measured > 96% INTEROPERABILITY PROTOCOLS
(2) Dependence on observations demonstrated by the EC/FP7 MyOcean2 project
Dependency on in situ observations (example of the Argo global network) Salinity observation minus model forecast for the MyOcean /Mercator Ocean global ocean reanalysis Argo has contributed to decrease by 70% the salinity 7-day error forecast in the top 100m of the ocean
Dependency on satellite observations
Dependency on satellite observations 93% of products in the catalogue depend on at least one satellite sensor When one particular sensor is down, the production is either stopped (mono-sensor) or degraded (multi-sensor). 75% of products were impacted by the loss of Envisat. In the Copernicus Marine product portofolio, 75% will depend on Sentinel3
(3) User uptake and engagement demonstrated by the EC/FP7 MyOcean2 project
3000 users convinced by the Copernicus Marine Service As MyOcean2 started, on April 2012, about 1000 users were registered. 18 months later, Copernicus Marine delivers three times as many users around the world, in 92 countries and more than 1000 organisations. The 3000th MyOcean user registered last November 12th from London is part of the Xodus group, an independent, international energy consultancy operating worldwide in two key energy markets: Oil & Gas and Low Carbon.
Users 3247 users Jan 2014 UPTAKE JANUARY users from ~1000 organisations ~100 new users every month
Users in 98 different countries (27 EU members) 32% Climate seasonal & weather forecasting Users 30% Marine & coastal environment Marine Resources 11% Marine safety 27% Research 50% 12% 20% 18% Business Others Public
User Training sessions Black Sea User training, oct 2013, Odessa Aiming at reinforcing the link between the MyOcean community and the regional users, the User Training Session The Mediterranean and the Black seas organised on October, 2013 in Odessa (Ukraine) by the MyOcean partners MHI and OC-UCY fully met MyOcean users' expectations. Done in 2013 Training Med Sea MFC (Bologna) User Workshop at EEA (Copenhagen) Training Black Sea MFC (Odessa) Training IODE/Ocean Teacher (Ostende) Planned in 2014 Training NWS MFC (May), Global MFC User Meeting at EMSA (Lisbon, June)

WWF and the Arctic Users say: Lars-Erik Mangset, project lead of ArkGIS and Pablo Izquierdo, GIS and visual communications specialist, both based at WWF Norway : MyOcean service is an open and free service which provides centralized info for different datasets related to our work on the Arctic. This is a first advantage for us. The second added value of MyOcean compared to other services is that it s fast, user-friendly and easy to find and open data." The ArkGIS tool is also an excellent media to raise awareness on conservation issues in the Arctic among the general public or to contribute to public debate on further development in the Arctic.
