Summary This report summarizes main results of the Engineering Committee of Campus Europae initiative. Three degrees of engineering (Civil, Electrical or Telecommunication, and Informatics) from six European universities have been analyzed. Aspects like the credit system, types of examinations, number of years of the degree and intermediate titles, areas of excellences, different specialization roadmaps, and program for each degree have been exhaustively compared. As a result, a tentative program for student exchange in these areas is established. Finally, a procedure for the incorporation of future partners has been elaborated. 1. Members (September 2002) Cazzani, Antonio University of Trento, Italy. Cescotto, Serge University of Liege, Belgium. Gorelik, Alexander University of Minsk, Belarus. Hillery, Michael University of Limerick, Ireland. Melgani, Farid University of Trento, Italy. Soraru, Giandomenico University of Trento, Italy. Vilarinho, Paula University of Aveiro, Portugal. Wolper, Pierre University of Liege, Belgium. Sutter, Gustavo Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Boemo, Eduardo Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. E. Boemo chaired the committee, G. Sutter was the general assistant for the coordination tasks, and S. Cescotto directed the program related to Civil Engineering. 2
2. Agreements of the After two meetings in Luxembourg during Q1 and Q2 of 2002, the following procedures and agreements were stated: A root of knowledge, common to each degree, should be identified. Subjects corresponding to a given area of knowledge should be grouped in semesters (first or second) rather than years. Areas of excellence of each school should be identified. At least one semester should be taught in English language. Two semesters in different campus should be the minimum path for exchange. A description of the different engineering curricula of the participating universities should be elaborated. A temporary webpage ( would be prepared to concentrate all the working material. A set of standardized formats for information exchange and data benchmarking should be prepared. Theses formats should be also utilized in the future to incorporate new members to Campus Europae. The brief description of the degrees to be included for each subject were: o Credit system. o Number of years of the degree and intermediate degrees. o Programs for each degree. o Different specialization roadmaps. o Year Semester of each subject. o Brief description of each subjects (two or three lines). o Brief description of examination methods. o Brief description of same academic organizational aspects like the role of room lectures and hands-on laboratories in each campus. o Areas of excellences. o Main bibliography for each subject. Inclusion of well-known books written in English to make clear the description. 3
For example, the following table shows a brief report of a given subject. A complete set of the working documents is attached in Appendix A. Subject Semester Credits Previous Subjects Description Logic Design 2 8 Boolean Algebra Logic Functions, Combinational Circuits, Basic Blocks, State Machines, Controllers, and Microprocessor Models. A more detailed description of the selected subject for the common program (contents, laboratory, bibliography, www page, etc) would be collected by contacting the responsible professor in each campus. There are two traditional approaches to teach engineering: a) Theory and labs together in each subject, or b) One subject for theory and another for the corresponding laboratory. This fact should be clearly identified in each campus, and some mechanisms of compensation should be proposed. Engineering usually has an initial period of two years where main basic themes (mainly Physics, Math, and Chemistry) are presented. The successful finalization of this period is traditionally a hard goal for most of the students. So, the Committee considered that exchange during this early stage should not be convenient. As consequence, the mobility should start, for engineering, in Semester 1 Year 3, or sometimes in the semester 2 of Year 2. Lectures and teaching material in this semester should be developed in English language. In some particular cases, some subjects should be replaced by other ones situated in Year 2 or 4, but always in the same semester. Figure 1 summarizes the framework adopted. Nearly 70 credits of common subjects should be covered. A root of equivalent subjects in both contents and semester should be Identified and promoted. Main result of the should be a detailed Implementation -as a case study- of two engineering areas: o Telecommunication engineering (together with related courses of Computer Eng. and Electrical Eng.). o Civil Engineering. Arrangements should be done to extend the engineering space to Material Science (and Material Engineering) degrees. Professor Sergio Cescotto (University of Liege) should be in charge of the coordination of the tasks related to Civil Engineering. Prof. Paula 4
Vilarinho (University of Aveiro) should coordinate future actions in Material Science. Second exchange period should be done in Years 4-5 or Master. In this case, most of the subjects are usually optional, and the technical literature is written in English language. So, no mayor problems should be expected at these levels. To take advantage of the singularities and areas of excellence of each center, the exchange program should be arranged between pairs of campus, using a la carte procedure between the partners. However, these tasks should be programmed in future meetings, once the success of Campus Europae initiative. Figure 2 summarize the framework adopted. For Year 4-5 and Master, areas of knowledge rather than individual subjects should be interchangeable in programs at different campus. A roadmap of different specialization along the CE campuses could be offered to the students. The final report should be readjusted before the start-up of the initiative, considering that many universities are modifying their plans to adapt them to the Bologna recommendations. Finally, it was stated that the nature of the task would be exclusively constrained to technical aspects. A clear compromise respect the project should be finally obtained from university authorities, as well as faculty colleagues. Financial support to contract new professors or to establish complementary salaries (allowed in some universities) must be essential for the success of the initiative. 5
CAMPUS EUROPAE YEAR 3 - SEMESTER 2 COMMON SUBJETCS IN LOCAL LANGUAGE. YEAR 4 CAMPUS EUROPAE YEAR 3 - SEMESTER 1 COMMON SUBJETCS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE. YEAR 3 YEAR 2 YEAR 1 CAMPUS n CAMPUS 2 CAMPUS 1 Figure 1: The first area of exchange in English language is situated in Semester 1 Year 3. Some exception in the 3+2 scheme can exist: subjects can be selected from Year 2 or 4, but always in Semester 1. Ideally, all the campus should offer a common portfolio of equivalent themes. Thus, the exchange could be directly done. This goal must be stated in the future, after the success of the CE initiative. YEAR 5 / Master YEAR 4 CAMPUS n CAMPUS 2 CAMPUS 1 Figure 2: Second exchange will be taken into account selecting subjects situated in Year 4-5 or the Master Degree. In these cases, the subjects are usually optional, and the lower number of students make easy to adapt the courses to the CE Project. Some subjects of Year 4-5 could be selected using a la carte procedure between the partners. The selection of these subjects should take into account the area of excellence of each country. The portfolio could also cover lacks of knowledge in a given campus. 6
3. Campus Europae Program for Civil Engineering Introduction to Civil Engineering programs: Three universities are participating to the Civil Engineering discussions of this preliminary phase: Liege University Trento University Aveiro University Except for a very limited number of teaching units, the programs of these three universities are the same as far as the content is concerned. Only minor differences exist in the ECTS attributed to the different teaching units. The following documents are appended In Appendix A: Questionaire Engineering ULg: it contains a detailed description of the Civil Engineering Program of Liege University In Appendix A: Aveiro-Civil Engineering Program: they contain a list of the different courses of Aveiro University Following this introduction, a tabular summary of Campus Europae BSc and MSc programs in Civil Engineering is reported (The MS-excel file its also available at the Campus Europae - web page: It contains the following information: - 10 tables (Semester 1 to Semester 10) comparing, for the 10 semesters of the study program, the courses taught by the three universities - A table (Summary of year 3) summarizing the courses taught in the three universities during the third year i.e. semesters A table (year 3 for Trento students) proposing a program of courses that should be taken by students from Trento who want to spend the third year in Liege or Aveiro - A table (Year 3 for Aveiro students) proposing a program of courses that should be taken by students from Aveiro who want to spend the third year in LIEGE or Trento - A table (Year 3 for Liege students) proposing a program of courses that should be taken by students from Liege who want to spend the third year in Trento or Aveiro 7
The following point must be mentioned The three tables (Year 3 for Trento students, Year 3 for Aveiro students, Year 3 for Liege students) only constitute a preliminary proposal which has to be discussed in details by the Civil Engineering representatives of the three universities Two of the three universities are currently involved in a profound revision of their programs to fulfill the requirements of the Bologna process: Trento and Liege - For Trento, the revision is already well advanced and a revised program for the 5 years is already available, although some modifications could still be introduced; this new program has been used to establish the appended tables. - For Liege, the revision is just beginning and the draft of the revised program is still too far from a stable state to be taken as a basis of the present work; therefore, the currently existing program has been used to establish the appended tables; hence, an updated version of these tables will be produced as soon as a stable revised program will be available. 8

4. Campus Europae Program for Telecommunication Engineering In this section, a potential program for Telecommunication Engineering is proposed. The final organization can suffer some minor modifications in the near future, because of many of the schools involved in the CE initiative are currently modifying their programs in order to adapt them to the Bologna directives. Main characteristics of the schools involved in the program at the moment are: Telecommunication Engineering - Universidad Autónoma de Madrid: It is a 5-year program with a concentrated itinerary of 4-years, adapted to the Bologna format. So, the degree can be matched with 4-year programs (like Trento or Limerick) or 5-year ones (like Aveiro). Each subject comprises both laboratory work and theoretical lectures. Currently, no Master Degree program is offered. As usual in Spanish universities, Telecommunication is strongly oriented to Signal Theory. However, it also has an important component of Computer Networks and Protocols, Programming Methods, as well as Digital Design. These topics are central areas in Informatics (or Computer Engineering), the other branch of the school. Telecommunication Engineering University of Trento: This is a modern program organized in the 3+2 mode. Each subject only comprises laboratory work or theoretical lectures. The degree presents some emphasis on Signal and Image Processing, as well as Electromagnetism. There are five specialization areas: Multimedia Technologies, Networking, Telecommunication for the Environment, Electromagnetic Technologies, and finally, Electronics for Telecommunications. Telecommunication Engineering University of Limerick: There are several related degrees: Computer Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Electronic Systems, Computer Systems, and finally, Information Technology & Telecommunications. All of them are 4-year degrees. There is also a complete portfolio of master programs in two modes: part-time and full-time. For other CE members, there is a complete program related to VLSI fields which can be interesting for the other partners of CE initiative, during the year 4 exchange period. Telecommunication Engineering University of Aveiro: This is a new degree based on a 5-year program, plenty of different optional subjects. There is an important specialization in Electronic Design. Due to this diversity, the Aveiro degree can be easily matched with any CE program. Telecommunication Engineering University of Liege: This program has a strong component of basic knowledge (Math, Physics, etc.). After that, 26
the student has freedom to choice different subjects. As a consequence, no problem for exchange is observed. The following tables show a matching between the subjects for pairs of universities. A codification by color has been utilized to point the degree of matching between the subjects: Color Green Yellow Blue Blank Code Coincidence in content, semester, and year. Coincidence in content and semester. Same contents but different semester. TBD (to be defined). Some subjects have not a definitive placement in some new programs. The tables are duplicated in order to show the sequencing of matters in each degree. 27

Madrid Trento Highlights From the previous tables, the following results can be summarized: There are 20 almost equivalent subjects between the Trento program and the 4-year Madrid one. Some pairs of Trento subjects (like Digital Transmission and Numerical Transmission) match well with a single Madrid course. A detailed study of these cases will be performed in the future. Twelve subjects are situated in the same semester, four of them sharing both semester and year. Eight subjects are similar, but are situated in different semesters. The coincidence is important, considering that only years 2, 3 and 4 have been taken into account in this study. So, an extra matching between programs would be obtained if some changes in the sequencing of the subjects were implemented. Some subjects of Madrid Computer Engineering match with the Trento program (e.g. Pattern Matching). In the same way, additional matching would be obtained when Trento start the Computer Engineering Program, because of Telecommunication in Madrid, has an important component of such degree. An important difference between Trento and Madrid schools is the laboratory organization. Madrid subjects comprises both theory and laboratory, meanwhile in Trento, the labs are independent subjects. As consequence, students from Madrid should select the corresponding laboratories of each subject. 30

Madrid Aveiro Highlights From the previous tables, the following results can be summarized: There are 24 almost equivalent subjects between the programs. In this case, the 5-year program of Madrid fit better. Nine subjects are situated in the same semester, six of them sharing both semester and year. The coincidence is important, considering that only years 2, 3 and 4 have been taken into account in this study. So, an extra matching between programs would be obtained if some changes in the sequencing of the subjects were implemented. Some pairs of subjects are interchangeable but not identical (e.g. Robotics and System Theory). 33

Students of Limerick can consider interesting to get a specialization in themes of Computer Engineering in Madrid. 38
Telecommunication Engineering. Final remarks From previous tables, that use the Madrid program as a benchmark, the equivalences between the subjects in the other campus can be easily obtained. However, an analysis of these tables shows that is possible to establish a common semester one (in year 3). The following conclusions can be summarized from this report: For the first exchange, there is root of common subjects that could be taught in English in all the CE campus in semester 1. Few extra resources should be necessary to duplicate these subjects in these campus where the semester is different. These key subjects are listed in the following table: Subject Comment Optimal Semester Computer Architecture This subject is universally based in a well-known book of Hennessy and Patterson. The coincidence is almost complete: it is situated in the 1 semester of year 3 in Aveiro, Madrid, and Liege. In Trento is situated the same semester but in year 2. 1 Network Architecture I (or Computer Networks) Macroeconomics. Object-Oriented Programming. Digital Signal Processing This is a standard course related to the OSI architecture description. The textbook of Tanenbaum (Computer Network) is universally utilized. It is situated in the 1 semester of year 3 in Trento, Madrid, and Aveiro. In Liege is situated the same semester but in year 4. First course on Economics. A theme common to all plans. It can be situated in any place of the engineering curriculum. Additionally, an English version of this subject can be useful for student of different CE degrees. A formal course using C++ or Java language can be situated in semester 1 of Year 3. An English version of this subject can be useful to other CE engineering students. Classical course that is present in all campus. Year 3 in Madrid, Year 4 in Aveiro, Limerick, and Trento Advanced Digital Design. This lateral course about ASICs, FPGAS, and VHDL can be followed after complete a basic course on Logic Design. The subject is now present in Madrid, Trento and Limerick. 1 39
Second semester. Final remarks. A proposal for semester 2 of year 3 is shown in the next Table: Subject Comment Optimal Semester Communication This is other classical of electrical, computer or 2 Theory telecommunication engineering programs. It is situated in semester 2 of Year 3 in Madrid, Aveiro, Liege, and Limerick. In Trento is situated in semester 1. Final Project. This requisite is common to almost all degrees. 2 Exchange in this field is common in European universities. It is a useful wildcard for the second exchange period. It can be done in Year 3 o 4. Operating Systems This subject is present in the last year of several degrees. 2 Robotics / Control Theory / Mechatronics A subject related to Control Theory is usually present in electrical engineering schools. 2 Subject 1 to be selected by the home university. Subject 2 to be selected by the home university. Subject 2 to be selected by the home university. Option 1: In accordance with the previous bilateral tables presented in this report, each university can select equivalent subject for each student. Option 2: Subjects that are missing in the home university can also be selected. Option 1: In accordance with the previous bilateral tables presented in this report, each university can select equivalent subject for each student. Option 2: Subjects that are missing in the home university can also be selected. Option 1: In accordance with the previous bilateral tables presented in this report, each university can select equivalent subject for each student. Option 2: Subjects that are missing in the home university can also be selected The exchange in the last year can be done in a basis of complete package on subjects. In this case, there is not the restriction of the English language. Each partner can select the subjects that best suit with their own program in order to complete or complement local curriculum. For example, telecommunications students of CE can select a set of Madrid subjects related to Computer Engineering, like Software Engineering, Knowledge Engineering, etc. Or to select the first year of the Master Programs of Limerick, etc. In accordance with the previous paragraph, could be interesting to offer in English language 4 or 5 specialized subjects related to a narrow discipline like Technology Management, ASIC Design, Computer 40
Engineering, etc. Each area could be covered by a particular campus in accordance with research or industrial experience. Considering that specialized courses often have few students, a policy of special attention of CE students could be easily implemented. The Final Project, common to almost all degrees, is a useful wildcard for the second exchange period. 41
5. Preliminary review for Computer Engineering / Computer Science Degrees analyzed: Universidad Autónoma de Madrid Universidad Aveiro University of Liege University of Limerick University of Minsk Madrid and Limerick offer a 4 year degree. On the contrary, Aveiro and Liege use a 5 year format. The University of Minsk has a complete different structure. In Computer Engineering, the main result is that the most feasible time for the academic exchange is the second and fourth academic year. We analyze here the exchange of the second year. The exchange of the fourth year is easier to be planed, due to the last two year are mainly composed with optional (elective) courses. The second year exchange: This year is part of the basic engineering education. In Aveiro, Madrid, Liege, Limerick and Minsk, (and in other universities) are composed mainly of common subjects with other related engineering (Electronics, telecommunications, etc.). In this second year, students continuing studding the important fundamental material which includes: Engineering Mathematics Computer Software Digital Systems Electrical Science Physics 42
