Agenda Introduction Questel IPBI packaging How to elaborate technology scouting projects? A 3-step process 1- Identify technologies in the defined domain (Analysis module) 2- Evaluate technologies (Technology scouting module) 3- Take decision (Licensing In module) Q/A Conclusion Benefits / ROI Next step Stay tuned 3

Use case: Technology and skill scouting in Lithium-Air Batteries 5
Use case Technology and skill scouting in Lithium-Air batteries - Graphene patents for Lithium Air cathode Scenario: The company Robert Bosch that already owns a portfolio in Lithium Air batteries, wants to improve its portfolio by adding patents using graphene. 6
1. Identify technologies in the defined domain Creating a database focusing on Lithium Air batteries Keywords x Similarity Highlighting, KWIC, concepts Manual review Lithium Air database (632 patents) Computerized assisted reading 50% 50% 100% 100% 7
Investment Trend Increasing investment over the last decade Great technological interest Strong academic activity the past few years Potential licensing opportunities Some small players and startups Trend Incomplete data (publication delay) 70% 30% 8
Identification of graphene containing patents 10% 90% 9
Main players 10% 90% 10
Selection of graphene patents to analyse Potential technologies Potential to inventors acquire to / partnership hire opportunities 50% 50% Final clean up : to remove 4 patents co-filed between one academic and one industrial player and one patent already dead 47 patents 11
Selection of graphene patents to analyse Lithium Air database (632 patents) Graphene based Lithium Air patent to study (47 alive patents) 12
2. Evaluate technology (Technology scouting module) 100% 13
Technology Scouting Metrics adjustable according to the user s own practice 50% 50% 14
50% 50% Technology Scouting 15
Selection of high potential patents Lithium Air database (632 patents) Graphene based Lithium Air patent to study (47 patents) Graphene based Lithium Air patents with highest potential (3 patents) 16
3. Take decision (Licensing In module) To perform such an analysis, it is necessary to define three sets of patents: Your own portfolio (Here we choose Robert Bosch 23 patent families which are related to Lithium Air batteries) The set of patents that seem to be promising. (Based on the Technology Scouting 3 patent families) The environment (set used in the first part 632 patent families) 30% 70% 17
Legal Evaluation Except for the metric concerning the number of patents with over 5 years left, technology scouting portfolio improves the Robert Bosch s portfolio in almost all the legal metrics. Set from technology scouting Robert Bosch Metric low for the technology scouting portfolio because of its low volume (2 five patent families but 100% of them have over 5 years left) The technology scouting set helps Robert Bosch portfolio get better and stronger. 18
Technical Evaluation From a technical stand point, the situation can be compared to the legal evaluation graph. Tech Scouting patents are highly cited, thus indicating interest from other parties The tech scouting portfolio improves the Robert Bosch portfolio even if it was already well positioned in terms of originality 19
Geographical evaluation In terms of geographical metrics, the two portfolios seem to complement one another. The low values for the Tech scouting portfolio are linked to its very small size (only 3 patent families) 20
Interested parties - Here is a list of companies citing the most the patents from the Technology Scouting portfolio - In theory those companies might also be interested in buying or licensing in these patents. 21
Take a decision Copyrights Trademarks Lithium Air database (632 patents) Graphene based Lithium Air patent to study (47 patents) Graphene based Lithium Air patents with highest potential (3 patents) Intangible assets Cooperative agreements Business location Manufacturing capacity Know-how 22
