6 KT at CIHR Knowledge translation is a dynamic and iterative process that includes synthesis, dissemination, exchange and ethically sound application of knowledge to improve the health of Canadians, provide more effective health services and products and strengthen the health care system. This process takes place within a complex system of interactions between researchers and knowledge users that may vary in intensity, complexity and level of engagement depending on the nature of the research and the findings as well as the needs of the particular knowledge user. i.e. Collaboration and partnerships are critical, particularly to facilitating evidence-informed change KT Definition Components Knowledge synthesis Dissemination Knowledge exchange Ethically-sound application of knowledge The contextualization and integration of research findings of individual research studies within the larger body of knowledge on the topic Synthesis is a family of methodologies for determining what is known in a given area or field and what the knowledge gaps are Involves identifying the appropriate audience for the research findings, and tailoring the message and medium to the audience Refers to the interaction between the knowledge user and the researcher resulting in mutual learning. It encompasses the concept of collaborative or participatory, action-oriented research where researchers and knowledge users work together as partners to conduct research to solve knowledge users problems (Integrated KT) The iterative process by which knowledge is actually considered, put into practice or used to improve health and the health system KT activities must be consistent with ethical principles and norms, social values as well as legal and other regulatory frameworks Knowledge translation is the bridge between discovery and impact Research outputs Research impacts KT is about making a difference

7 Two broad types of KT at CIHR End-of-grant KT Integrated KT The researcher or research team develops and implements a plan for making knowledge users aware of the knowledge generated through a research project Research approaches that engage potential knowledge users as partners in the research process Requires a collaborative or participatory approach to research that is action oriented and is solutions and impact focused For example, the knowledge user partner helps to define the research question and is involved in interpreting and applying the findings The Knowledge to Action Cycle 1 20 A useful tool/schematic for describing the many components of the KT process Commercialization is a component of KT Knowledge is put into action in the form of new products, tools, or services brought to market Collaboration and partnerships are key Aim to support research, build talent and facilitate linkages Try to ensure that CIHR programming and policies related to commercialization of health research are relevant (Advisory Committee, partnerships on grants are required)

8 Proof of Principle Phase I and II Purpose: Facilitating and improving translation of knowledge and technology resulting from academic health research for the benefit of Canadians Phase II requires contribution from a partner Key objectives: Provide the opportunity to determine commercial viability Provide the opportunity to enhance and strengthen the value of IP Improve business prospects and potential for downstream investments Promote activities that support and accelerate commercialization of IP Available funds: POP I $160,000, POP II $300,000, for 1 year POP II funding ratio 1:1 (CIHR : Industry) Proof of Principle Phase I and II Dr. Cashman received two POP phase I and one POP phase II grants since 2003, which have helped bring about the current success of technologies behind Amorfix Life Sciences Ltd. (Toronto, Ontario) : Technologies discovered by Dr. Cashman (UBC) and Dr. Lehto (UofT) Developing diagnostics tests to safeguard against prionbased diseases in the human blood supply (vcjd) and the food supply (BSE). Test can also detect brain diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and ALS Recipient of Technology Pioneer Award, World Economic Forum Davos, Switzerland Dr. Neil Cashman MD University of British Columbia Chief Scientific Officer Industry-Partnered Collaborative Research Operating Grants Purpose: Supporting partnered research in health Helps the academic community and Canadian companies work together Supports research that is beneficial to both parties with economic and health outcomes for Canada Key objectives: Encouraging and facilitating mutually beneficial university-industry collaborations in health research Stimulating the health research programs of companies Enhancing communications between industry and universities Supporting opportunities for industry-relevant development and training Available funds: $500,000 per year for 2-5 years, funding ratio 1:1 (CIHR:Industry)

9 Industry-Partnered Collaborative Research Operating Grants About Dr. Theresa Allen - Innovator Brain migrant (South North) Presently at CDRD (UBC), previously U. of Alberta Recipient of numerous CIHR grants and awards ( ) Inventor on 18 patents, several products Developed long-circulating (Stealth ) liposomal anticancer drugs Applicant Partner: Alza Corporation (California) Dr. Allen received 3 industry-partnered grants between 1997 and 2005 which provided support to help commercially develop the innovation and further her research.
