4 ANSWER KEY 1. What was the temperance movement? A social movement against the consumption of alcohol. Temperance supporters argued for widespread restriction or even prohibition of alcohol production, sales and consumption. 2. Why might some in the USA and Canada have agitated for prohibition of alcohol? Prohibition supporters would point to social reasons (alcoholism, domestic violence etc.) and religious reasons (quoting biblical texts etc.) to support prohibition. 3. How was the policy of the Canadian Government more moderate than that of the US Government with regards to laws around alcohol production, sale and consumption? In the US, the production, sale and consumption of alcohol was prohibited by law. In Canada, it was regulated and restricted, but not prohibited. 4. What was the flapper look? How might it have offended the sensibilities of older generations? How might is have been linked to advancements in women s liberation? Bobbed hair, above the knee hemlines, garish jewellery, heavy make-up and silk stockings. They expressed freedom, liberation, hedonism and sexuality. They would have offended those with more Victorian values regarding dress and behavior. 5. Discuss each technological change below and evaluate its impact on Canadian society: Technology Changes Impact Increased production (cheaper Changes the shape of NA cities. Automobiles and more available). Aviation Telephones Airplanes become more acceptable forms of travel. Replace the telegram as THE communication device. Allows for greater travel opportunities. Connects people all over the world.
5 Radio Film Medicine By the end of the 1920s, most homes had one. Theatres pop up all over North America. Move from live cinema to films. Insulin invented. Main form of entertainment. Allows public broadcasting and creation of a unified national identity. Another major development in communication (propaganda), entertainment, and recording. Turns diabetes from a death sentence into a manageable disease. 6. How did certain new technologies contribute to the following? a) The creation of a single, Canadian national identity/ culture? Radio allows a single experience to be shared by everyone across a country (eg: Sports, political debates etc.). b) The Spread of American culture into Canada? Mostly spread through Hollywood films and through advertising. 7. Contrast Lionel Conacher & Bobbie Rosenfeld with typical professional athletes today. What differences do you notice? Athletes in the 1920s tended to be all-rounders who competed in multiple sports. They were different from today s specialists. Also, today we have professional athletes. In the 1920s, most athletes were amateurs (they had day jobs).
