2 What is Classical Studies about? To understand ourselves, and our place in a bicultural society, we need to know about the societies that have laid the foundations for the world in which we live. Classical Studies is the study of the people, places, and events of the classical world and how they influence the modern world. Classical Studies is an interdisciplinary subject: students engage with literature, languages, art, history, science, technology, religion, and philosophy. Students explore community, cultural identity, values, and perspectives and think critically about human behaviour and relationships to appreciate the civilisations of ancient Greece and Rome, understand the past and the present, and to imagine possible futures. Why study Classical Studies? Classical Studies engages the minds and imaginations of students. Classical Studies encourages students to make links between past and present civilizations, to imagine a possible future. By exploring diverse values and traditions, viewed from their own cultural perspectives and those of others, classical studies prepares students for informed and active citizenship in New Zealand and the modern world. New Zealand continues to be influenced by the classical world. By understanding the political, military, religious, philosophical, technological, artistic, and aesthetic developments of the ancient Greeks and Romans, students learn how the past continues to inform the present. From the rise and fall of powerful individuals and empires to the creativity and invention of artists and engineers and to the formulation of ethical systems and the evolution of social justice, students become increasingly aware of the debt owed to classical Greece and Rome. Classical studies students learn to ask questions and challenge ideas. Classical Studies fosters thinking and inquiry skills by exploring classical sources and by debating issues within the context of the key concepts. Students not only gain an enthusiasm for classical civilizations but also learn to select, organise, and communicate information clearly and logically and to evaluate the reliability of evidence. By learning about the diverse and complex values of these societies, students develop the ability to form and reflect on their own viewpoints, respect others viewpoints, and make informed judgments based on critical thinking.

3 Learning Objectives As the New Zealand Curriculum does not have achievement objectives for Classical Studies, learning objectives have been developed to describe the intended outcomes. These objectives are structured in two aspects: Thinking critically about sources Understand the complexity and diversity of social, political, artistic, and ideological aspects of the classical world and how these aspects influenced the lives of Greeks and Romans living in those times. Examining values Understand how and why ideas and values of the classical world have influenced other cultures, including New Zealand, over time.

4 Level 3 Classical Studies AS Analyse ideas and values of the classical world. 4 credits External *AS Analyse the significance of a work(s) of art in the classical world. 4 credits External AS Analyse the impact of a significant historical figure on the classical world. 6 credits External AS Demonstrate understanding of significant ideology(ies) in the classical world. 6 credits Internal AS Demonstrate understanding of the lasting influences of the classical world on other cultures across time. 6 credits Internal *We will not attempt AS91395 (3.2)

5 Course of Study You will attempt four of the five Level 3 Classical Studies Achievement Standards (External Achievement Standard 3.2 is excluded). Two standards are assessed internally during the year and two externally at the end of the year 22 Level 3 NCEA credits will be available to you. You will study three contexts Alexander the Great, Virgil s Aeneid, and Greek Mythology. Specific outlines for each context studied will be distributed at the commencement of that context. Detailed information about the nature of each Internal Achievement Standard will be given to you when you come to attempt them. You will need to be very careful of plagiarism with the Internal Assessments. Plagiarism means using another's work without giving credit. You must put others' words in quotation marks and cite your source(s), and must give citations when using others' ideas, even if those ideas are paraphrased in your own words. Citing of sources, and the inclusion of a bibliography, will be necessary requirements of the research topic. Term 1 Context: Alexander the Great Achievement Standard focus: AS91396 (3.3) Analyse the impact of a significant historical figure on the classical world. 6 credits External AS91397 (3.4) Demonstrate understanding of significant ideology(ies) in the classical world. 6 credits Internal (completion of this internal around Alexander the Great will run into T2). Term 2 Context: Greek Mythology Achievement Standard Focus: AS Demonstrate understanding of the lasting influences of the classical world on other cultures across time. 6 credits Internal (you will assess the influence of Greek vase painting through time). Field trip visit to the Greek art collection at Victoria University in Wellington.

6 Term 3 Context: Virgil s Aeneid it is likely we will start our study of this Roman epic towards the end of T2. Achievement Standard Focus: AS91394 (3.1) Analyse ideas and values of the classical world. 4 credits External End of Term 3/Term 4 preparations for external Achievement Standards.
