27 Better integrating financial markets into, policy focussed, macro models (CP-FP) Objective: Finding the most effective ways of introducing financial market imperfections into macro models and developing more realistic models of bank behaviour. Research dimensions (summary): Exploring how to develop new or existing macro models along four dimensions: 1) integrating sudden stops in liquidity, 2) allowing for bubbles and the interactions of bubbles with financial market constraints, 3) exploring the behaviour of agents under conditions of risk and uncertainty, and 4) explicitly modelling both financial institutions and the key transmission channels. 29 2.1-1 Obstacles and prospects for sustainable lifestyles and green economy in Europe (CP-IP) Objective: To understand the role and impacts of changes in consumption behaviour to promote smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, and a resource efficient economy. Research dimensions (summary): Understand the complex relationships between natural resources, human needs, technology, economics, ecology focusing on consumers' values and behaviours; Assess the obstacles and opportunities associated with the transition to European sustainable lifestyles and green economy highlighting the nexus between consumer behaviours, wealth and welfare; Investigating new business models capable of efficiently managing natural resources, reducing current levels of consumption and at the same time improving health and quality of life in the EU; Measuring the prospects for sustainable lifestyles and green economy by addressing new ways of consuming, producing, living and moving. 29

Research dimensions (summary): Developing a comprehensive framework to analyse the impacts of companies on the areas related to the Millennium Declaration Implementation of at least one small scale-case study of the impacts of companies using the developed framework Analysis of how international competitiveness and responsible business practices can be mutually reinforcing in a development context Assessment of the consequences of complementarity and non-complementarity of commercial activities with official development aid 31
32 2.1-4 The future of the welfare state (ERA-Net Plus) Objective: To pool the necessary financial resources from the participating national (or regional) research programmes and the EU to launch a joint transnational call for proposals in the area of SSH research on Welfare Futures (coordination objective); To assess the pros and cons of the European Welfare State, to develop new approaches to studying the welfare state and to come up with the policy options for its future development (scientific objective) Research dimensions (summary): To address the entire spectrum of social and political change in welfare societies in a comparative way, ranging from the economics of the welfare state, the production of welfare and social innovation to aspects of individual welfare and social inequality and the interactions between these issues. Research should also cover the formation of new political arenas involving businesses, NGOs, foundations, and social movements and their role in reforming the welfare state. 32

34 Addressing European governance of temporary migration and mobility to Europe (CP-FP) Objective: To analyse the governance, practices and perceptions of temporary migration and mobility flows across the EU s external borders Research dimensions (summary): Research should investigate European and national programmes and initiatives for the temporary migration of the third-country nationals to Europe so as to highlight both positive aspects and limitations, as well as their impacts on growth and the labour market; Asses in particular the trend, type and significance of seasonal migration of thirdcountry nationals (TCNs) by outlining risks and benefits of existing legislation and practices, including the perspective of countries of origin; To identify the main drivers of different temporary forms of mobility for individuals and their migratory patterns, thereby contributing to the understanding of their social, cultural and historical dimensions, including from a gender perspective. 34
35 3.2-1 Social innovation Empowering people, changing societies? (CP-IP) Objectives: To understand how and under what conditions social innovation leads to change in existing structures, policies, institutions and behaviour, and to identify and assess the factors that are crucial for social innovation to have a sustainable social impact and to be scaled-up. Research dimensions (summary): European and the non-european dimension covering an appropriate number of countries and a wide range of policy areas Cultural, religious and historical contexts across different world regions in view of elaborating a general theory of social innovation Explore testable hypotheses on conditions under which social innovations may have a sustainable social impact link between social innovation and behavioural change Gender diversity and equality, skills, leadership and the development and implementation of social innovations Diffusion processes of social innovations within and between countries The role of innovation networks and actors therein for the success of social innovations 35
36 Early childhood education and care: promoting quality for individual, social and economic benefits (CP-FP) Objective: To understand the broad impacts of Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) and to support its organisation. Research dimensions (summary): Widening access to ECEC for disadvantaged children and vulnerable groups and overcoming the obstacles (including cultural) to participation in ECEC; Optimising ECEC effectiveness; Professionalization of staff which include attracting, educating, up-skilling and retaining high quality staff; Assessing the impact of ECEC on all children including the disadvantaged and measuring outcomes; Funding ECEC- balance of public and private investment, system efficiency and quality and social equity who is being served by the ECEC services; Developing innovative European indicators for children's well-being in ECEC. 36
37 The impact of the third sector on socio-economic development in Europe (CP-FP) Objective: To understand societal trends and their innovation potential and impact on socio-economic development in Europe. Research dimensions: Stock-taking and conceptual clarifications: what are the long-term developmental trends of third sector activities in Europe? Measuring the cultural, social and economic impacts - methods and ex-post evaluations of third sector activities: what outcomes do these activities produce for society, what social capital do they develop for those working in the sector? Enabling and constraining factors: under what conditions do third sector activities yield economic or social returns, when do they not? Policy implications: what type of governance infrastructures need to be created to derive maximum benefit from the third sector? 39 Security and democracy in the neighbourhood: the case of the Caucasus (CP-FP SICA) Objective: To better understand security problems and their root causes in the Caucasus and to consolidate the relations of the EU with this major neighbourhood area in ways that may advance democratization in the Caucasus region. Research dimensions (summary): Examine the geopolitical role of other actors in the Caucasian region as well as the impact of regional and international organization, shifting borders and migration within that region; Investigate the numerous intra-societal challenges that exist within different countries in the Caucasus (role of civil society, the media, linguistic and cultural divides, etc.) in order to identify the roots of conflicts and insecurity; study the links between intra-state democratization and regional security, including energy security; Assess the potential role of the EU in the Caucasus and the implications of the findings for designing effective policies to cope with insecurity in the area; Embrace a strong interdisciplinary approach, including comparisons between different countries from the region and, possibly, with third countries. 39
40 Facing transition in the south and East Mediterranean area: empowering the young generation (CP-FP SICA) Objective: To comprehensively assess the prospects of the young generation to become a driving force of socio-economic development and agents of social and cultural change in the SEMC area. Research dimensions (summary): Assessment of applicability and relevance of other experiences of socio-economic transformation to the current process in SEMC Analysis of the underlying causes of youth unemployment, as well as education and market skills requirements in the region, esp. women Assessment of the economic prospects for young people, and their political role and integration into new political and economic reality Analysis of the nature and context of changes in social values and norms of young men and women (family, politics, participation, religion) 40
41 Media in conflicts and peace building (CP-FP) Objective: To better understand the specific and complex role of different types of old and new media in conflict transformation and peace processes Research dimensions(summary): Address the role of the different types of media (global and local media, also social media) in the cycle of conflict, from escalation to post-conflict reconstruction and peace-building; Investigate the relations between media and political elites, between media and business, between media and the military in the countries in conflict, as well as the media's relations with NGOs and with EU institutions and international organizations; Assess the role of traditional or new forms of media in giving assistance in crisis management and rebuilding peace; Emphasize the role of investigative journalism and war-reporting in terms of 'early warning' and in shaping public perceptions of the significance of conflicts. 41
42 EU-India Social Sciences and Humanities Platform (CSA) Objective: To encourage effective, structured and coherent international scientific cooperation in the SSH at global level through closer cooperation between national programmes of Member States, Associated Countries and India. Specific activities (summary): Organizing brokerage events to enhance the networking of on-going research projects that include sharing of best practices, discussing prospects for cooperation; Organizing information and awareness activities by bringing together researchers and various stakeholders in order to identify priorities for collaboration and also to enhancing the quality, quantity and visibility of future actions, including the possible formulation of joint research agendas; Providing assistance in forming research partnerships and in identifying suitable research partners. 42
43 Transatlantic Social Sciences and Humanities Platform (CSA) Objective: To encourage effective, structured and coherent international scientific cooperation in the socio-economic sciences and humanities at global level through closer cooperation between national programmes of Member States, Associated Countries and the USA, Canada, Brazil and Mexico Specific activities (summary): Organising brokerage events to enhance the networking of on-going research projects, sharing best practices and discussing prospects for cooperation; Organising information and awareness activities by bringing together researchers and various stakeholders in order to enhance the quality, quantity and visibility of future actions, including the possibility of formulation of joint research agendas; Organizing events aimed at identifying priorities for collaboration; Providing assistance in forming research partnerships and in identifying suitable research partners. 43
44 Untapped potential for growth and employment reducing the cost of non-tariff measures in goods, services and investment (CP-FP) Objective: To close our knowledge gap on the effects of different regulatory environments on trade and investment and how policy can influence them for more growth, innovation and employment as well as well-being. Research dimensions (summary): Conceptualisation of non-tariff measures across countries and sectors; collection of qualitative information and their quantification; analysing their effects on growth, innovation, well-being, environment and inclusiveness; NTM's relationship to other policy objectives such as health, environment, poverty or intellectual property rights; Improving the availability of comparative data by building up already existing efforts, connecting them, improving the quality; Analysing reduced or modified NTMs on trade and investment with respect of the objectives of Europe 2020 and of reducing global poverty and of increasing quality of life. 44

46 Citizens' resilience in times of crisis (CP-FP) Objective: To investigate how crises of different nature impact on citizens' rights and how society responds to such crises. Research dimensions (summary): Identify the mechanisms underlying the depletion of rights and which rights are most at risk in the case of economic, political or social crises; Analyse the way citizens claim and enact their rights in crisis situations; Analyse the relations between citizens and institutions in a time of social, economic or cultural crisis, the ability of citizens to adapt and learn from these changes; Analyse citizens' various forms of resilience at difficult times (changing lifestyles, strengthening the social and family network, reducing mobility, moving abroad) and the consequences of this behaviour on their relations with other groups. 46
47 Addressing demand in anti-trafficking efforts and policies (CP-FP) Objective: To address the phenomenon of trafficking in human beings in order to understand how to enhance the effectiveness of current EU and national policies and legislation aimed at eradicating it. Research dimensions (summary): Should take into consideration the complex nature and conceptual dimensions of demand for services provided by victims of trafficking (including demand by employers, consumers and those facilitating the trafficking process); Investigate the role of the socio-economic, cultural and legal context in the different Member States and other concerned European countries in shaping demand, including from the perspective of public authorities, civil society organisations and the media and the role of internet in fostering or reducing demand; Amongst other, investigate the impact of migration policies, regulation of the labour market, legislation on prostitution and their interactions with forms of multiple discrimination, including on grounds of gender and ethnicity; 47
48 The multilingual challenge for the European citizen (CP-IP) Objective: To achieve a multilingual European society that preserves its linguistic diversity and encourages citizens to deeper European integration, full access to information and to a higher degree of employability and social cohesion. Research dimensions (summary): Conduct comparative analyses of past and present language-related policies adopted by different actors in order to foster a more cohesive society through multilingualism and effective communication; Research into languages as an instrument of political power that may lead to the disappearance or proliferation of minority languages and cultures; Research on how to strike a balance between preserving linguistic diversity and facilitating effective communication between all European citizens; Assess the advantages and disadvantages of language teaching at various levels and of various forms of language learning; Assess the effects of new technological tools, new forms of communication on multilingual skills; 48
49 Transmitting and benefiting from cultural heritage in Europe (CP-FP) Objective: To foster creative and innovative approaches, including the development of new tools and methods, in order to preserve the cultural heritage and pass it on to future generations of Europeans. Research dimensions (summary): Analyse the way young generations promote, enrich and transmit cultural heritage and values in multicultural societies; Analyse how the re-use of historical buildings and sites can result in sustainable models for cultural heritage preservation, restoration and management; The role of cultural tourism and specific regional aspects (landscape and gastronomy) to contribute to the economic and social development of European regions and cities, including job creation; Analyse the impact and the value of cultural heritage and its potential for creating jobs, economic growth and for exporting EU best practices to third countries; Analyse how to protect and promote traditional skills and professions in the area of cultural heritage and how to combine innovative approaches for further developing. 49

51 Towards a European longitudinal childhood and youth survey (CSA) Objective: To map the available data sources on children and young people, investigate their comprehensiveness and comparability, and identify gaps with a view to designing a complementary & cross-harmonised survey. Research dimensions (summary): Through a multidisciplinary approach to ensure comprehensive coverage of the topic, capturing the full picture of the growing-up process from birth to the end of a child's education (possibly including aspects related to the transition to work and parenthood); To design and test a survey based on the gaps identified that could be implemented at least in a large, representative sample of the EU countries, in cooperation with Member States. 51
52 Post-carbon cities in Europe: A long-term outlook (CP-FP) Objective: To address the specific issues of cities and their role in economic growth, in shaping policy, pooling knowledge, attractiveness to people and enterprises, social cohesion and cultural interactions Research dimensions (summary): Draw-up qualitative scenarios on the future of EU cities(up to 2050 and beyond) and quantify the emerging trends and tensions in EU cities (demography, human behaviour, economic development, social cohesion); Explore innovative ways of achieving EU post-carbon cities, including a better management of urban economic, social and ecological flows that deals with water, waste and energy; Share EU urban best-practices with emerging and developing countries; Define an evidence-based 2050 Roadmap for EU post-carbon cities. 52

Evaluation, monitoring and comparison of the impacts of EU funded SSH research in Europe (CP- FP) Objective: To develop a more permanent system for the evaluation of EU funded SSH research in line with the objectives of scientific excellence, policy relevance and public relevance at large. Research dimensions (summary): Investigate the outcomes and impacts, in particular in terms of quality of publications, training of young researchers and the constitution of networks of European scientific excellence; Its impacts on the development of a ERA in SSH, in particular in terms of the role of the ERA-Nets and of art. 185 initiatives in the domain of SSH, the mobility of researchers and the circulation of concepts across national and disciplinary borders; Its impacts on society, in particular the development of communication among researchers in their interactions with civil society at large; Sufficient comparison with national SSH research programmes should be part of the evaluation, in line with the concept "European added-value" of the EU funded 54

Lithuanian Presidency conference on the input of SSH to European and global development Objective: To discuss the role of SSH in the light of the new Framework Programme for Research and Innovation "Horizon 2020" and the EU s growth strategy Europe 2020, from the point of view of addressing societal challenges. Research dimensions (summary): A particular focus should be put on the methodological and knowledge foundations that define the abilities of SSH to contribute to addressing societal challenges under Horizon 2020; Analyse the changes needed in scientific design and practices and what good practices in research policy could inspire European policies and research practices across countries; Support innovative interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity by drawing lessons from projects funded under FP7 and other national or international research programmes. 55
