High Value Manufacturing Catapult Generating cutting edge manufacturing innovation. Adding real value to the UK economy... The Facts...
Introduction Contents The High Value Manufacturing Catapult works with government, academia and industry partners to bridge the gap between innovation and commercialisation of manufacturing in the UK. We develop and commercialise revolutionary technologies and add real value to the UK economy. We cannot do this in isolation. Working in partnership with likeminded organisations in Europe is key to our work in strengthening innovation and the role of advanced manufacturing in more a more balanced economy. This factbook aims to give a flavour of our work and the many international projects and partnerships we engage in. Bob Gilbert Chairman HVM Catapult UK Manufacturing - 10 facts 1 Catapults: UK Policy 3 Bridging the Innovation Gap 5 How we are funded 6 Our Mission 7 Our Achievements in Our Offer 9 Our Key Technologies 11 Examples of Capability Expansion 13 The HVM Catapult Centres 15 Supervisory Board 23 Management Board 24 Core Team 25 Contact Us 27
UK Manufacturing - 10 Facts 1. The manufacturing sector is worth 6.7 trillion globally 2. Manufacturing makes up 147.7bn, or 11% of UK s GDP 3. 54% of the UK s exports come from manufacturing 4. Manufacturing accounts for over 2.5 million jobs in the UK 5. 72% of UK R&D is funded by the manufacturing industry 6. Average starting salaries for UK engineering graduates are more than 10% higher than other graduates 7. UK manufacturing productivity has improved by over 40% in the last decade 8. UK is the world s 2nd largest aerospace manufacturer 9. 2/3rds of UK manufacturing companies are investing in reducing their carbon footprint 10. UK ranks 15th in the global manufacturing competitiveness index
Catapults: UK Policy Catapults: UK Policy Catapults are technology and innovation centres that rapidly advance the UK s best R&D into global commercial success. There are currently nine Catapults: Catapults are helping to turn great ideas into reality, by providing access to world-class research and development facilities and expertise that would otherwise be out of reach for many businesses in the UK. Each Catapult is focussed on an area in which the UK has real potential to generate growth in strategically important global markets, and there is already strong evidence they are benefiting the economy in terms of jobs and growth. 5 Bridging the Innovation Gap How we are funded 9 8 We aim to generate funding from three sources in equal measure: Technology Readiness Levels Applied R&D Industrial Production Filling the gap in technology & knowledge readiness Led by industry demand Open access innovation Targeting companies of all sizes Focused on faster, cheaper, safer & greener manufacturing Manufacturing Readiness Levels 33% Core Public Funding 33% Collaborative R&D funded 33% Industry Funded Contracts 2 Early Research 1 5 6
Our Mission Our Achievements in 2014 The High Value Manufacturing Catapult is the catalyst for the future growth and success of manufacturing in the UK. We help accelerate new concepts to commercial reality to create a sustainable high value manufacturing future for this country. The High Value Manufacturing Catapult s ultimate aim is to more than double the contribution of the manufacturing sector to the UK economy staff 1012 Projects 224m total income 240m order book 50% competitively won CR&D SME Engagements Private sector clients m of government core funding received Generates of commercial and CR&D income of innovation income accessed by SME's 7 8
Our Offer Our Offer Through our Centres (see page 15): We have capability which spans basic raw materials through to high integrity product assembly processes. We provide access to world-class facilities and manufacturing equipment generally out-of-reach to individual companies Examples include: 1. One of the world s most powerful commercial lasers, at the MTC 2. Europe s second strongest water jet cutter, at AMRC 3. The largest superplastic forming press in any European research environment, at AFRC 4. The largest scale machining capability of any research facility in the world, at NAMRC We employ over 1,475 scientists, engineers technicians and support staff to provide at elbow support to companies and to push the boundaries of high end manufacturing We develop a network of leading suppliers who contribute to key UK industry supply chains We unite industry, government and research in a shared goal to make the UK an attractive place to invest in manufacturing 9 10
Our Key Technologies Our Key Technologies We offer technology capabilities across all stages of the manufacturing process. We have the world s most advanced equipment, expertise and infrastructure to lead innovation in these technologies. 9 Examples of Capability Expansion The AFRC expanded its facilities in response to industry demand, driven by its growing capabilities. Opened Summer NCC has doubled its facilities in response to industry demand. New facilities include a training centre. Opened Autumn AMRC s Factory 2050 will be the UK s first fully reconfigurable assembly and component manufacturing facility for collaborative research. Completion in CPI is constructing the National Biologics Manufacturing Centre, working with companies in the field of biopharmaceuticals. Completion in MTC Elite Training Centre, will be a flagship facility for advanced apprenticeship programmes. Opening Summer NAMRC has installed a purpose-built vertical turning lathe and floor-type milling and boring centre. Both machines are the biggest of their kind in the world available for collaborative research. Operational Summer WMG s new Energy Innovation Centre includes a Battery Materials Scale- Up Pilot Line, a battery characterisation laboratory, testing chambers and an electric/ hybrid drives test facility. Opened Summer
