6 Research Experience May 2000 Graduate Research Assistant, Carnegie Mellon University Present School of Computer Science and Heinz School of Public Policy and Pittsburgh, PA Management, with Professor Latanya Sweeney Genomic Privacy Project: Design and evaluation of computational models to learn how DNA database records can be linked to named individuals. Design of genotype-clinical phenotype inference techniques for standardized databases, data mining for location-based pattern matching, as well as the design of novel machine learning techniques for learning DNA from longitudinal medical records. Design and evaluation of a DNA sequence anonymization technique called DNA Lattice Anonymization (DNALA). Led to papers [P11], [P13], [J1], and [J4] Trails Learning Project: Design of the Re-IDentification of Data in Trails (REIDIT) family of data mining algorithms which discover location-based information patterns for linkage purposes. Application to surveillance, as well as evaluation of privacy threats within biomedical and Internet environments. Constructed a formal model to anonymize trails and prevent privacy compromises. Assisted in the supervision of an undergraduate in the development of a web-based demonstration for trail privacy. Demonstration for the Usage Log Data Management Working Group at the 13 th Annual Conference on Computers Freedom and Privacy. New York, NY. Led to papers [P9], [P12], [J3], and [J6]. Multiparty Project: Construction of modular security-enhancing protocols for existing multiparty computation schemas in which certain participants may act maliciously (i.e. do not follow protocol). Design of a novel privacy protection model called kunlinkability for protecting data from linkage in closed populations. Development of Secure Trail Anonymizer (STRANON), a protocol designed to formally thwart location-based re-identification in Bradley Malin Curriculum Vitae - Page 6 of 11

7 an encrypted setting. Led to papers [P1], [P2], and [P6]. Consumer Health Informatics: Extraction, construction, and statistical analysis of personspecific models to learn relationships between online health information usages with respect to offline medical problems. Research performed for Personal Path Inc. (now ParadigmHealth Inc.), a complex-diseases managed care company. Led to paper [P10]. Biometrics Privacy Project: Design and evaluation of k-same, a model for protecting privacy in face recognition systems. Extension to k-same-select, a privacy model which preserves utility in the form of classification models, such as for gender or expression detection Led to papers [P4] and [J5]. Social Networks Project: Application of network analysis techniques for personal name disambiguation and entity resolution in directories. Assisted in the supervision of one master s student from the Information Networking Institute in the application of network analysis for alias detection in online environments. Led to papers [P3], [P5], and [J2]. Scam Spam Project: Design and evaluation of statistical data mining techniques for text analysis and classification of fraud-communicating messages. Application with respect the Nigerian 419 scam. Led to papers [P7] and [P8].
