1 Environmental Studies Certificate (ESC) Program Outline PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION DATE: September 2009 OUTLINE EFFECTIVE DATE: January 2017 PROGRAM OUTLINE REVIEW DATE: September 2022 GENERAL PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This certificate provides an interdisciplinary approach to the full breadth of today s global environment. Students need to select at least three courses that deal with environmental issues in a scientific way. A student can also explore their interests by taking more science or studying course from a social, cultural, philosophical, political or economic perspective. This certificate is a stepping stone to a number of diplomas, associate degrees or bachelor degrees. Students must complete an environmental project to receive the certificate. After completion of the certificate, students find employment in entry-level jobs or move into other programs to become more specialized. Program Information: All the courses in this certificate transfer to B.C. universities and many universities in Alberta and the rest of Canada. It is highly recommended that students see an Educational Advisor before selecting their courses. All courses transfer but if students are moving into programs at other institutions the selected courses need to be confirmed. Please review the College of the Rockies website for transfer opportunities Delivery: This program is delivered face-to-face and a number of courses are available on-line as well. COTR Credits: 0 Students must complete a minimum of 10 courses, totaling at least 0 credits according to the chart shown on page. Students must participate in at least one project put forward by the College Environmental Committee and attend at least one meeting of the College Environmental Committee. 1

4 COURSE GRADE: Course grades are assigned as follows: Grade A+ A A- B+ B B- C+ C C- D F Mark (Percent) A grade of "D" grants credit, but may not be sufficient as a prerequisite for sequential courses. < 50 Students must have a C average to be granted the certificate. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: ENGL 100 () English Composition (-0) This course focuses on composition for academic purposes and develops a student s ability to write clearly and effectively. Students also learn the fundamentals of critical thinking, persuasive writing, techniques (including rhetorical appeals and devices), scholarly research, and academic reading. ENGL 101 () Introduction to Poetry and Drama (-0) An introduction to the critical reading of literature through the study and analysis of poetry and drama across historical periods from Shakespeare to twenty-first century poets and dramatists. ENGL 102 () Introduction to Prose Fiction (-0) The aim of English 102 is to read fiction with an understanding of genre, technique, and form; to apply various crucial strategies to literary texts; and to develop analytical writing skills appropriate to essay at the university level. Above all, students can read with increased understanding of the art of literature and, therefore, with more enjoyment and a better grasp of fiction s contribution to their understanding of the moral, social, and political forces that shape modern life. COMP 105 () Introduction to C/C++ Programming Language (-) Covers the basic programming techniques of C and C++ languages with an introduction to structured programming and abstract data types. COMP 15 () Introduction to Computers and Data Processing (1-) This course allows students to develop skills in the operation and applications of Professional Productivity Software for the PC. Students use the four applications of the Microsoft Office 201 suite: Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. The theory component develops a broad and general understanding of current computer technology. MATH 101 () Finite Mathematics 1 (-1) This course is intended for students who require an appreciation of higher mathematics, but don t require calculus. Math 101 stresses a logical and critical thinking approach while investigating the following topics: an introduction to linear algebra, linear programming, the simplex method, set theory and counting, an introduction to probability and statistics, and Markov Processes. 5 MATH 10 () Differential Calculus (-1-1) This course is intended for students who are pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree. Topics include: functions, limits, continuity, derivatives and their interpretation, differentiation rules, techniques of differentiation, implicit differentiation, inverse functions, exponential functions, logarithms, applications of differentiation such as linear approximations, Newton s method, related rates, analysis of graphs, and optimization, the Mean Value Theorem, definite and indefinite integrals, integration by substitution, Riemann sums and applications of integration. Calculus is a necessary step in any career in the sciences including Biology, Chemistry, Commerce, Computer Science, Engineering, Geology, Mathematics, Medicine, and Physics. It is also useful in any field which uses Statistics to analyze data. MATH 11 () Calculus for Commerce and Life Sciences 1 (-1-1) This course can be taken by any student aspiring to learn about calculus, but is intended for students who are studying Biology, Psychology or Commerce. The focus of the course is derivatives and their applications in these fields. Topics include functions, limits, continuity, and the Intermediate Value Theorem; first and second derivatives of functions, including logarithms, exponentials and trigonometric functions; linear approximation, Newton s Method, optimization problems and curve sketching and antiderivatives, substitution and areas between curves. At least two of the following topics are included: derivatives of inverse trigonometric functions, related rates, probability and statistics, matrices and Gaussian elimination; partial derivatives and Lagrange Multipliers. STAT 106 () Statistics (-1-1) This course introduces the fundamental ideas of statistics and can be applied to any discipline. Topics include: collection, description, and presentation of data; calculating central tendency and dispersion; probability and statistical inference; hypothesis testing (means, proportions, variances, one and two samples); correlation and regression; decision making and sampling, Goodness of Fit Tests, and Contingency Tables. BIOL 151 () Biology of the Environment (-) As an introductory course to the fields of environmental studies and biology, BIOL 151 focuses on environmental and ecological topics within biology. The course concentrates on the relationships within nature, how the environment affects us, how we impact the environment, and how to deal with environmental problems and live more sustainably. Local issues and current events topics are used as examples wherever possible. BIOL 151 helps inform you about the issues behind many of these topics from a scientific perspective. te: BIOL 151 does not meet the requirements for a science major s course and therefore cannot be substituted for BIOL 101 or BIOL 102. CHEM 100 () Environmental Chemistry (-) CHEM 100 is an introduction to the fields of environmental studies and environmental chemistry. Qualitative and quantitative aspects of environmental processes are studied. Topics include atmospheric processes (including those involving carbon dioxide and ozone), air pollution, acid rain, natural waters, dissolved oxygen, and the fate of chemical compounds in the environment. Where possible, examples involving local issues and current events are studied. te: CHEM 100 does not meet the requirements for a science major s course and therefore cannot be substituted for CHEM 101 or CHEM 102. 6 ECON 101 () Microeconomics (-0) This course deals with the economic principles that govern the individual segments of the economy. Topics include supply and demand, price elasticity, utility, cost of production, perfect and imperfect market structures, theory of production, the demand for factors, and the pricing of factors. Some current business situations are discussed. ENST 200 () Environmental Stewardship (-1) This course examines the relationship between tourism, outdoor recreation and the management and conservation of natural resources. The central concepts of sustainability and sustainable development in working with communities, other resource based industries, and visitors to natural resource based areas are studied. Planning and management strategies to maximize benefits and minimize impact to ecosystems, communities and visits are addressed. The roles of various agencies and organizations managing natural resources are examined in terms of their tourism/outdoor recreation roles. GEOG 101 () Introduction to Physical Geography 1 (-) Physical geography includes the study of the various spheres of the Earth, namely the atmosphere, the lithosphere, the hydrosphere and the biosphere. Course lecture and lab topics introduce the sciences of cartography, meteorology, climatology, biogeography, and soils. GEOL 105 () Introduction to Geology (-) An introduction to the major principles of physical and historical geology covering the origin and structure of the Earth, plate tectonics, volcanic activity and other mountain building processes, deformation and erosion of the Earth s crust, and the formation and properties of minerals and rocks. GEOL 106 () Physical and Historical Geology (-) This course is an introduction to the major principles of structural, historical and economic geology. Topics covered include the origin and structure of the earth, the dynamics of plate boundaries and related topics of deformation of the earth's crust, volcanism and other mountain building processes. Historical geology topics include geologic time, relative and absolute dating techniques, organic evolution, the study of fossils and the geologic history of the earth from the Precambrian to the present. Mineral deposits and natural resource issues will also be examined. ANTH 101 () Introduction to Cultural Anthropology (-0) This course involves an in-depth exploration of the concept of culture and the cross-cultural study of human diversity within the discipline of anthropology. Students focus on topics such as anthropological research, ethics, culture, worldview, gender, language, marriage, families and households, indigenous peoples, religion and globalization. Students also engage in self-reflexive examination of their own worldviews, perceptions, and biases in relation to other peoples and cultures. ANTH 120 () Indigenous Worldviews on Contemporary Structures (-0) Through the use of a decolonized pedagogical framework students witness and explore Indigenous issues in Canada with a specific focus on British Columbia exclusively from an Indigenous perspective. Indigenous worldviews on these contemporary issues are heard through study literature and other ways of knowing from Indigenous peoples. The meaning and impacts of decolonization, treaties, cultural appropriation, self-governance, empowerment, cultural survival, and nation rebuilding are also explored. 7 COMC 102 () Advanced Professional Communication This course expands on the writing skills learned in COMC 101 or ENGL 100 and introduces the art of oral communication. The course presents functional communicative strategies that can be used in any workplace environment. Students gain practical experience through engaging in relevant activities and assignments that center on gathering and summarizing information to produce successful proposals and reports, designing clear visuals with graphic illustrations, and developing speaking skills appropriate for informal and formal presentations and interviews. COMC 25 () Intercultural Communication (-0) This course explores the inherent relationship between culture, language, and communication. The key concepts of identity, culture, assumptions and stereotypes, beliefs, value systems and globalization are discussed. From theory to practices students investigate the impact of identity and context in intercultural interactions. The focus of this course is to help students develop meaningful strategies to communicate in today s culturally diverse communities. ECON 250 () Environmental Economics (-0) An introduction to the concepts and methods of analysis in environmental economics. It applies microeconomic principles to the examination of market failures and how they may be corrected either through incentives or policy. Topics include valuing the environment, cost-benefit analysis, environmental policy analysis, and specific Canadian environmental issues and policy. FNST 101 () First Nations Studies (-0) This course is an introduction to the multi-disciplinary field of Aboriginal studies. The prehistory, history, and traditional and contemporary cultures of Aboriginals in Canada and their various perspectives are addressed. Additionally, the historical overview of Aboriginal/non-Aboriginal relations and their effects are explored. GEOG 211 () Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (2-4) Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is an applied field encompassing the acquisition, storage, processing, analysis and presentation of spatial information. GIS has become an essential tool for spatially informed decision making in government, academic and private sectors. Course lectures will cover underlying theory, concepts and applications of GIS. Topics covered include spatial data acquisition, roster and vector data models, database, cartography and geoprocessing. Lab sessions will apply lecture theory through hands-on experience with industry standard GIS software. GEOG 212 () Advanced Studies in Geographic Information Systems (2-4) The prerequisite course (GEOG 211) provided a foundational introduction to the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS); this course covers advanced applications of GIS. Lecture topics covered include cost-benefit analysis, application of fuzzy logic modeling, uncovering spatial trends and patterns, professional map design and GIS project management. Lab sessions will apply lecture topics through hands-on experience with industry standard GIS software. HIST 20 () Environmental History (-0) Nature and humans have had a long, complex, reciprocal relationship, making for certain conceptions, processes, and complexities to develop. Those developments have led to three main areas of historical overview and deeper consideration: 1) How Canadians, including Indigenous people, have thought about the natural environment and colonized landscapes; 2) How development of resources and industrialization/urbanization in Canada have had short and long term effects; and Sep. 26, 2017/do/z:\outline\programoutline\2017 winter\esc.docx 7

8 ) How Canada s conservationists and environmentalists have responded at various junctures to address concerns. Using an array of interdisciplinary sources emerging in the burgeoning environmental history field, this course ultimately places the dynamic interplay between the environment and people under study to better understand that relationship over time. PHIL 201 () Social and Political Philosophy (-0) This course is designed to explore some of the basic questions about the nature of human beings in society, and to investigate the philosophical foundations of political structures. We analyze the concepts of liberty, justice, political power, and historical laws. We address questions about political obligation and rights, as well as conduct a thinker-by-thinker historical analysis of social and political thought in the Western Tradition. Our resources include readings from Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Machiaveli, Hobbes, Rousseau, Marx, Nietzche and many more, both classical and contemporary. POLI 100 () Introduction to Politics and Government (-0) Introduces students to the major methods, approaches, and issues of political science, helping to give them grounding in the conceptual and practical fundamentals of the discipline. In order to provide a comprehensive overview, areas of study include the nature of politics and its phenomena; the major processes and arrangements which shape political behaviour, involvement, and perspectives; the challenges posed to and adaptations made by existing political systems; and, through a comparative approach with Canada, the organization of political systems in other countries and an evaluation of how well their structures and processes work. PSYC 270 () Environmental Psychology (-0) Psychological theory is used to explore how the environment affects our daily lives and how we, in turn, shape and influence the environment. Topics include wayfinding, personal space, learning and work environments, crowding, territoriality and serious environmental problems. A greater understanding and appreciation of built and natural environments are the primary objectives. SOCI 102 () Introduction to Sociology 2: Social Institutions (-0) Examines the major social institutions and social processes in contemporary society. Aside from an introduction to sociology, an overview of the primary theoretical perspectives of the discipline, special topics include: Family and Intimate Relationships, Education, Religion, Mass Media, Economy and Work, Power, Politics and Government, Social Class and Stratification, Global Stratification, and Collective Behaviour, and Social Change.
