1 Name: _ Block: Date: ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT Each of us consumes some of the Earth s products and services every day. How much we take depends on the ways in which we satisfy our needs and wants the many habits that together create our lifestyle. We can ask ourselves these questions to get a better sense of what these habits are: How much water do I use on a typical day? What do I eat and how much do I eat? How much food do I waste? How do I transport myself and how far do I go? How much clothing and footwear do I have and how often do I replace it? What and how much stuff do I buy? How much energy and materials are required to keep me dry and warm/cool? How much garbage do I produce? How much land and energy is used for my recreational activities? Our answers to these questions reflect the demand that each of us places on nature. 1. Visit the website: 2. Click on the tab that says FOOTPRINT SCIENCE 3. Click on the tab that say Footprint Basics. Read the information and answer the questions below: a. Describe what an ecological footprint is and use the diagram to determine what it measures. b. Describe what bio-capacity or biological capacity is. 4. Now go back up to the top and on the right click Your Ecological Footprint in the related Links box. 5. Click on the take quiz link. When it says to select your location, choose USA. Click BEGIN. Skip the part. 6. In the Welcome window click get started in the NEW USERS part of the window. 7. Create an avatar of your choosing, and begin the survey. If the model asks you to choose a version, choose the detailed version. Complete parts of the survey by answering the items below: a. How often do you eat: i. Beef/lamb: ii. Poultry: iii. Pork: iv. Fish: v. Eggs/Milk/Dairy

2 b. How much of your diet is based on fresh, unpackaged foods? c. How much of the food that you eat is locally grown or produced? d. What comes closest to your monthly new clothing, footwear and/or goods purchase? e. What comes closest to your household s annual new household furnishings purchase? f. Which housing type best describes your home? g. Do you have electricity in your home? h. How many people live in your household? i. What would you say comes closest to the materials your house is constructed with? j. What percentage of your home s electricity comes from renewable sources (either directly or through purchased green power)? k. How far do you travel by car each week (as a driver or passenger)? l. How far do you travel by motorbike each week (as a driver or passenger)? m. What is the gas mileage of the car you travel in most often? n. What is the gas mileage of your motorbike? (if this applies) o. How often do you drive in a car with someone else? p. How far do you travel by bus each week? q. How far do you travel by train each week? r. How many hours do you fly each year?

3 s. What was your ecological footprint in terms of the number of Earth s necessary to sustain your lifestyle? t. Did this surprise you? Why or why not? u. How many global acres of Earth s productive area are required? Tons of Carbon Dioxide? v. List the percentage breakdown for each of the five categories in the pie chart for your ecological footprint. (Hover over each color to get the %) Food: Shelter: Mobility: Goods: Services: 8. Now, click on edit your footprint and retake the quiz to reflect things you could legitimately change.
