12 Development of Vaccines A vaccine is a biological preparation that improves immunity to a particular disease. Began as "variolation, i.e. exposing uninfected individuals to matter from smallpox lesions. Now more scientific. Vaccine technology has wiped out major diseases, but newer ones are still needed.
