Main tasks to be accomplished during the next two years Vision Report Strategic Research Agenda Deployment Plan 2009 (done) RD&D priorities forms of joint work for licencing and and activities implementation 7
Why to join? Our vision is that by 2025, the first geological disposal facilities for spent fuel, high-level waste, and other long-lived radioactive waste will be operating safely in Europe. Be involved in the next planned activities Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) How to achieve the Vision Report s goal Identification of research, development and demonstration (RD&D) areas and needs Prioritizing RD&D needs Deployment Plan Benefits for industry, research organisations and all stakeholders 8
Benefits to industry and to research organisations Have a collective and more influential voice at the European level Have an unequalled chance to be kept informed on the developments and future needs, and to prepare programmes Contribute to the defining of key projects for funding by all interested parties 9
Benefits to all stakeholders The SRA is an important step for Communicating the remaining research needs Creating synergies, co-operation, co-ordination within the IGD- TP, and with activities taking place in other technology platforms and within other international co-operation forums 10
Next steps Define the Strategic Research Agenda 2010 Consultation foreseen by end of 2010 First Exchange Forum beginning of 2011 Implement the Strategic Research Agenda Possible influence on future FP calls 11
Development of SRA and DP WMOs program needs Vision Report EC projects : NET.EXCEL, CARD Areas of importance and urgency + Priorities Strategic Research Agenda Advice Stakeholder research needs Participation Stakeholders JOINT EFFORTS: -Joint Projects -Information Exchange -Technology Transfer -Training -etc Deployment Plan 12
What has basically to be considered in the prioritization of RD&D tasks? Waste Management Programs & Conceptions - Geological disposal concepts: state of advancement, time frames, etc International & National Framework Conditions - Regulations - legal requirements - safety standards - etc State-of-the-Art - Radioactive waste management - engineering - sciences - RD&D WMOs needs for - licensing - construction - operation - final closure for - reduction of uncertainties for - confidence building - public acceptance for - training and education 13
WMOs needs for implementing geological disposal STAGES Technology Repository Generic Studies Conceptual Engineering Conceptual Design (an example) Selection Development Demonstration Application Host Rock & Site Technology Repository Design Technology Repository Construction Industrial Scale Manufacturing Repository Operation Safety Strategy & Methodology Long-term Safety: scientific/technical Facility & component design Site related characteristics Basically done for reaching the Vision in 2025 In situ experiments Application of methodology in safety case (improvement of methods if needed) Improvement of data base & systems understanding Large scale in situ & component tests Component & layout design Operational safety studies Detailed site characterization Excavation & Exploration Construction of main underground facilities Specific residual issues Full-scale protoytpes, industrial scheme Confirmation of rock properties Confirmation Studies at site Full-scale production and operation Construction Confirmation Monitoring 14
How is the Prioritization Process done? Checking WMO programs for their specific RD&D priorities Identification and compilation of key issues by WMOs (with focus on thematic issues which are important) Classification of issues according their importance to Vision and time target (2025) (next presentation) Analyzing major trends in order to find common RD&D issues Key Topics (early check up with stakeholders (SRA seminar) will help to verify the state-of-the-art and to specify matters) Listing of priority topics to be presented to stakeholders (consultation of participants, information to stakeholders) Finalization of Strategic Research Agenda and setting up the deployment plan (process to be repeated in regular intervals) 15
IGD-TP Methodology for Prioritization of RD&D Workflow for steps 0 to 3 Framework for the SRA within the repository development context SRA RD&D in waste management programs Expression of RD&D needs by Waste Management Programs Step 4 Prioritization of RD&D topics Step 3 Major trends common RD&D topics Step 5 Information & Consultation Process Step 1 Compilation of key issues by implementers Step 2 Classification of vision related RD&D issues Compilation of key issues Vision related analysis Major trends and list of Key Topics 16
Key Topics 1. Safety case methodology improvement of tools treatment of uncertainties specifics (scenario related) Scientific and technological basis for long-term safety 2. high burn-up spent fuel 3. long-term behaviour of sealing materials Design engineering and construction 4. design adaptation and optimisation 5. optimisation and demonstration of construction technology for repository components Cross-cutting and other 6. operational safety 7. monitoring 8. stakeholder involvement and governance 17
WMO specific topics and supporting actions Requirement management Waste acceptance QA issues and Safeguards Industrial scheme Transportation Costing Communication / information activities Knowledge management 18
The SRA seminar (Brussels 16/06/2010) All partners invited: process and key topics presented ½ a day of interaction allowing participants to give input No comments on methodology/process A lot of input for the key topics, but to our opinion mainly for the Deployment Plan 19
How to join? Joining a platform is not a simple decision. It is a commitment: To participate to the work performed in the framework of the platform To share views and works for the Vision Joining the IDG-TP platform is simple To endorse the Vision To send an application form to the Secretariat 20
Conclusion Solutions are available to achieve safety with SF and HLW Geological disposal Key research areas are identified for further improvements IGD-TP was launched to organize research programmes between EC member states Coordination with other platforms and programmes Partitioning and transmutation can provide help in optimizing disposal solutions In this respect the SRA will propose collaboration with SNE-TP 21
