1 Unit 6 Revolutions London on Fire Invention - is a unique or novel device, method, composition or process. It may be an improvement upon a machine or product, or a new process for creating an object or a result. An invention that achieves a completely unique function or result may be a radical breakthrough. Cultural Invention is any innovation developed by people that is not of a physical construct. Cultural inventions include sets of behavior adopted by groups of people. They are perpetuated by being passed on to others within the group or outside it. Key Concept: Change Significant Concept: Change can be positive or negative Criterion B: Investigating Summative: Updating an invention or idea that was revolutionary to the world Mar 18 9:44 AM Where are we now? * The age of Kings is slowly coming to a close *Europe is now moving into the modern world *Ideas are changing throughout both scientifically and philosophically (Enlightenment) *Change in government was happening everywhere while Nationalism within countries grew *The power of the Church was falling while the idea of reason was soaring *Advances in technology lead to the first factories and plants powered by water and eventually steam *This combination of new thoughts and advanced industry led to new way of life in Europe *Now the only thing in each countries way was its neighbors surrounding them... 5 The Enlightenment "Age of Reason" enlightenment = time of illumination scholars, artists, philosophers, scientists, and writers sought reason and an end to ignorance and superstition free thought led to many new ideas and a need to rid themselves of the old (like monarchy gov't) John Locke ( ) English philosopher Father of modern Liberalism believed in peoples "natural rights"(life, liberty, property) Two Treatises of Government (1689) influenced revolution leaders around the globe including the American colonies Voltaire ( ) French philosopher Was a deist who believed in god but not following religion fought for civil rights like rights to a fair trial and freedom of religion Very influential to the French and American Revolution Drank coffee 30 times a day Montesquieu ( ) French political thinker believed in the idea of separation of powers in gov't there should be 3 branches in government; the executive, legislative, and judicial All three should keep one another in check to make sure none became too powerful Mar 22 8:54 AM First Industrial Revolution Was a major turning point in the history of the world It's impact have effected everyone and everything since Started in Britain and quickly spread to Europe and North America Switch from manual/animal labor to machine labor Created a boom in textiles(cloth), iron works, and speed of production Used both water to run mills and coal to create steam to power machines Steam power - Metallurgy Steam powered engine Spinning Jenny - Cloth Mar 22 9:18 AM

Change from rural life to urban life Production increases enormously Natural resources became coveted by all countries Steam power led to coal mining and the ability to run factories far from direct water supplies Pollution and horrible working conditions were common Mar 22 9:39 AM Second Industrial Revolution began around 1850 was a continuation of the advances in the 1st Industrial Revolution Steam powered ships, railways, combustible engine, and electrical power the idea of "interchangeable parts" revolutionizes production many countries switch to the capitalistic economy even worse working conditions for people child labor becomes a major problem daily human life is changed forever people become consumers more so than ever (think "Story of Stuff") Mar 22 9:44 AM
