Master LIVE BLOG Articles THE SUCCESS OF THE FIRST EMJMD LIVE INTEGRATION WEEK The first integration week was in Lyon during the first week of september It was a real success and the students have enjoyed this first moment together. " Integration overall was a good experience. I particularly liked the activities that allowed LIVE students to interact and connect with each other, such as the cooking lessons, the tour of Lyon, the visit to Sanofi Pasteur, Prof. Delprat's barbecue, etc. Thus, one could say that the program at Lyon that one week successfully 'integrated' students into the program." " It was well organized, fun, engaging, purposeful, and educationally sound, with clear integration week goals." " I'd say the well organized and fantastic week. Every minute was enjoyable and thank you for the good deeds." " The integration week was definitely a hands full, but you remained resolute. I must say that I was keenly inspired by your great enthusiasm and unwavering energy; you were indeed unstoppable!"

" It was a pleasure to meet all of the coordinators of LIVE. Under my perspective I though the integration week was phenomenal. As I see it, you managed to turn something usually boring and difficult like the registration at the university and the learning of 'how-to-use-the-university-platforms" into something really exciting and fun! Also, everything was well organised. We had no problems with our accomodation, places to eat, schedules, etc. Which I believe it was a lot hard to manage than we all think. In sum of that we LIVE students got to know each other pretty well and became very close, which I also believe it is very important to make us good students when we start classes. " Stéphane Paul, Communication Manager (UJM, France) September 8, 2016 THE MASTER LIVE SELECTED within the 15 Erasmus+ Mundus JMD created in 2015 We're very happy to announce that the Master LIVE (86/100 points) is selected within the 15 Erasmus+ Mundus JMD (threshold at 79/100) created in This programme receives the support of the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union: a grant of 2,410,000 was awarded to the LIVE consortium. EACEA review overall comments (Erasmus+ Key action 1 - Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees / EMJMD): "The proposed EMJMD offers an interesting multi- and interdisciplinary academic programme in a very dynamic research area. The proposal is timely and well-structuring demonstrating significant contribution to the development of European High Education Area region. The consortium involves a number of non-educational associated partners which are engaged with the programme delivery and management in a variety of activities. The Associate Partners from the whole vaccinology chain include SMEs, pharmaceutical organisations and large companies that cover all the different areas where graduate students can be employed. The industrial actors offer funding which strengthens the sustainibility of the programme beyong EU funding. The proposal addresses current needs of the society in preparing specialists in fundamental and applied aspects of vaccinology capable of continuing their career in academia or industry or healthcare sector. The EMJMD consortium is comprised of strong academic teams with both experience in research and teaching of graduates with a large number of associated partners representing the major groups of stakeholders. The students will gain professional skills attending courses of all three consortium partners and practise at the best laboratories in Europe. Impact is anticipated in a realistic way at all levels. Networking activities can bring real employment opportunities. The project consortium has very good cooperation with third countries and its excellent EMJMD programme is well targeted to the Latin American countries." Prof Christine DELPRAT, EMJMD LIVE Coordinator

July 2015 MyLIVE APPLICANT NUMBER BEYOND OUR EXPECTATIONS! We have opened the MyLIVE online application from December 1, 2015 to February 21, 2016 i.e. 13 weeks. We expected to have 250 applicants to the 25 available places in the Master LIVE (leading international vaccinology education). We have reached 456 applicant registrations, far beyond our expectations! Applicants must answer 48 questions composed of 5 basic and 3 advanced questions in these 6 fields: Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology-Virology, Immunology, Physiology, Cell Biology. Each student has a comparable but different Multiple Answer survey (MAS) and the time to do the MAS is not limited but student are warned that it is saved. The applicants who have finished, have obtained a mean of 5.82/10 ranged from 1.30 to 8.78/10 at the MAS; then the next step scoring statement, recommendation letters and academic records selected a group of students recommended for interview. The mean of the interviewed group was 6.64/10 ranged from 4.45 to 8.78/10 at the MAS. Then the scored interviews have selected a group of students whose mean was 7.06/10 ranged from 5.22 to 8.78/10 at the MAS. The standard deviation decreased while the mean increased along the selection process meaning that the homogeneity and the quality of the scientific knowledge is much higher in the final selected group than in the registred applicants. Therefore, although the weight of the MAS represents only 11% of the final score (weight: MAS:2, statement:2, recommendation letter:2, academic records: 3, interview by Skype (15min per candidate):9, total 18) and was not used to eliminate students in the 2016 selection process, it is a clear indicator to demonstrate that our selection process keeps skilled students on the basis of their score at the MAS. Finally, we have met and discussed with the selected applicants during the integration week and we had no doubt that the selected applicants are outstanding students in many ways: good scientists from diverse origins, open-minded, good communicators and highly motivated. We are very proud of our demanding but efficient selection process. Prof Christine DELPRAT, EMJMD LIVE Coordinator February 2016 FIRST INTEGRATION WEEK IN LYON OF THE LIVE STUDENTS The first integration week was in Lyon during the first week of September It was a real success and the students enjoyed this first moment together. In total, 21 of the 23 students arrived for the integration week. They were accommodated at the CISL (Centre International de Séjour de Lyon). After a guided tour of Lyon with Jackie, the students were accompanied in their administrative tasks (enrollment in the universities of Lyon and Antwerp, computer connections, opening of a bank account, etc.). The week was also devoted to the sharing of social and recreational activities in order to create a group spirit. On the program, scrapbooking activity, cooking classes and realization of the first LIVE Master Cooking Book, facilitated the exchanges within the group. They were also received at the Sanofi Pasteur site in Marcy l'etoile for a visit and a description of the company's activities. Each evening, students and teachers met at Christine's home for festive and joyful barbecues. A very rich week for everyone. Stéphane Paul, Communication Manager (UJM, France) September 4, 2016 " Integration overall was a good experience. 4 BEGINNING OF THE LIVE SEMESTER 2 IN ANTWERP We are very much looking forward to welcoming the first generation Leading International Vaccinology Education (LIVE) master students for the second semester in the University of Antwerp. During this period, students will be trained extensively in infectious diseases and vaccinology by professors specialized in education and research. The University of Antwerp is a young and dynamic university ranked 11 th at the world s best young universities in the Times Higher Education. The University welcome more than 16,000 students, of which 2400 international students from 132 countries. We are convinced that besides the education, students will also love the city of Antwerp which homes many different nationalities, clearly visible in the general street scene: China Town, the Jewish quarter, the Spanish and Portuguese around Sint-Jansplein and Paardenmarkt, Indians from the diamond quarter, Turkish shops and, of course, Belgian pubs selling local beers. And maybe, we will be able to welcome the students in the snowy landscape we are currently enjoying in Antwerp. Peter Delputte and Kyra Kerkhofs, LIVE Local Coordinator and Administrative staff (UAntwerpen, Belgium) February, 2017 NEW ASSISTANT MANAGER IN THE LIVE TEAM! At the beginning of January 2017, the LIVE Master welcomed Claire Douet as an Administrative Assistant of the LIVE Coordinator, Pr. Christine Delprat. Who are you? I have always been passionated by international process, meeting other cultures, and with a Master degree in International Relationships in France, I decided to work abroad. After two years working in the International office of Universidad Santo Tomas in Colombia as International mobility and project coordinator, I am very delighted to be part of LIVE Team. In Colombia, I was involved in the Fellow Mundus Project, a student mobility Erasmus+ Mundus programme between Portugal, Poland, Spain and Colombia. This experience got me interested in going on working in the administrative process of strong and extensive international projects as the LIVE Master. What are you going to do? I will be a support in different LIVE Master administrative actions for the selection process, collection of the Quality Assurance surveys, registration, funding payment and communication. I will also assist on the Steering Committees and Academic Management Boards, and participate in exchange with the EACEA*. These functions will give me the opportunity to welcome and meet the high-skilled students and exchange with our valued partners. * Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency from the European Commission in charge of Erasmus+ Programmes Claire DOUET, EMJMD LIVE Assistant Manager (UCBL, France) January 3, 2017 STUDENTS SELECTED WORLDWIDE! The first promotion of the Master LIVE welcomes 23 students of 19 nationalities!

Christine DELPRAT, EMJMD LIVE Coordinator September 2016 THE JENNER PROMOTION The first LIVE promotion ( ) has been named in honor of Dr. Jenner, a pioneer in the field of vaccination. Edward Jenner ( ) was an English country doctor who introduced the vaccine for smallpox. Previously a keen practitioner of smallpox inoculation, Jenner took the principle a stage further by inducing immunity against this killer disease via exposure to a harmless related disease, cowpox. His technique provided safer and more reliable protection than traditional inoculation. Working in an agricultural community, Jenner knew of the country folklore that milkmaids never caught smallpox. They were known for their relatively flawless complexions, which were unmarked by smallpox scarring. However, they inevitably caught cowpox through their close work with cows. Jenner speculated that a bout of cowpox produced immunity against smallpox and even encountered locals who claimed to have deliberately infected themselves to provoke such a response. As a forward-thinking doctor who liked to experiment, Jenner wanted to prove his theory. In 1796 he inserted pus taken from Sarah Nelmes, a milkmaid with cowpox, into a cut made in the arm of a local boy, James Phipps. Several days later, Jenner exposed the boy to smallpox. He was found to be immune. Jenner called his new method vaccination after the Latin word for cow (vacca). But Jenner had no explanation for why this method worked - no-one could see the virus with the microscopes of the time. He submitted a paper to the Royal Society the following year. It was met with some interest but further proof was requested. Jenner proceeded to vaccinate and monitor several more children, including his own son. The full results of his study were published in 1798, but his apparent discovery was met with much opposition, and even ridicule. In time the value of his vaccine was recognized, but as many poorer communities had limited access to medical treatment it was several decades before its full benefits were realized. In 1853, 30 years after Jenner s death, smallpox vaccination was made compulsory in England and Wales. Stéphane Paul, Communication Manager (UJM, France) September 10, 2016 FIRST SEMESTER IN BARCELONA Our first semester is nearly finished, just one course to go and then the second period of exams. It has been a long and intense semester, from September 9, 2016 to February 2, Our general impression is very good. It is very diverse group of students, with various backgrounds, and our time with them has been a very enriching experience. They are hard working and have progressively adapted to our methods. They are very keen and have done a very good job. We ve done a close following of the students every week at tutorials. Despite being excellent students, their background in Immunology was limited in most cases. Nevertheless, their results have been good and they have demonstrated a high level of interest and learning capacity. They have been fully involved in seminars, discussions and other learning activities. Our programme is very intense, with many different teachers that included international experts in all fields. They ve had the opportunity to assist to classes in different centers, including Hospitals and Research Institutes. Concerning integration, they have interacted well enough with local students.

They have studied Spanish in a group specially created for them. Spanish-speaking students have used and e-learning platform for other languages (i.e.french and German). The accommodation facilities have been convenient, specially the campus Vila of Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB). As a final comment, we think it is highly unfair that local students are not covered by the EU fellowships. We know the Erasmus programme was born as a mobility programme, but in a fulltime Master degree there should be no difference between local and non-local students, other than traveling expenses. This deserves the attention of EU officials for future programmes. Paz Martínez and Dolores Jaraquemada, LIVE Local Coordinator and Head of Immunology Master (UAB, Spain) January 30, 2017 BACK TO BASICS: WE NEED BETTER COMMUNICATION As global citizens, it is difficult for us to be oblivious to what is currently happening around the world. With the political and social unrest that we have now, it seems that a lot of people are tired of being told they are "stupid", "uninformed", and "backward" - even before stating their point of view. We also know that this phenomenon has also creeped into scientific topics, including vaccination. Having debates (which can be about vaccines, alternative medicine, immigration, presidential election, etc) can be perfectly healthy and constructive, but one of its prerequisites is being reflective: do we constantly reject the other party's opinion just because it is different from ours? All of us need a mindful short pause when dealing with people that hold different perspectives. What are the underlying anxieties? What is their message, and what could cause their bias in doing data collection (if there is any)? Let's be honest: are we biased ourselves? Unsurprisingly, vomiting proofs spiced up by ad hominem attacks is never enough; how can we communicate our points (including scientific advancements) in an accessible, honest and yet persuasive way? Let's get rid of this knee-jerk condescending manner (with or without blatant classism) when we face people who beg to differ. On top of that, let's all do our best to make better vaccines and a better world! 7 Prof Christine DELPRAT, EMJMD LIVE Coordinator December KISSES «I knew my life was going to change when I had been selected for the LIVE master program» I knew my life was going to change when I had been selected for the LIVE master program. Earning a scholarship, living in Europe, improving my education. However, what I didn t expect was the personal growth I would develop. From meeting fascinating people from all over the world with different cultures and experiencing small everyday events, I m completely changing the way I perceive life and myself. One simple situation that makes me realize how different we are is the way we greet. You can learn a lot from the internet but nothing is more didactic than living the moment. Hugs? Extremely careful with those around the Asian culture, you might experience rejection. Kisses? Give and receive from some Arabic countries. One? Two? No! Three! And every time you greet! Fist bump? Not usual, but shoulder bump? In the African culture, it seems to be welcomed very well! But just in case, a regular hand-wave with a warm smile and a clear hello will do for everyone. But despite all the differences, one thing we all have in common is ambition. We all left our countries to fulfill our dreams leaving something behind. Family, friends, careers. To pursue and achieve a higher level of education. Something that could make us confront the world and perhaps change it. Knowledge in a field that can provide a better future for humanity. And that is what makes me proud of saying that I am a member of the LIVE master family. João Pedro Bonifácio Lopes, LIVE student (Portugal) January 2017 REVERSE VACCINATION, THE NEW VACCINOLOGY ERA IS NOW! One of the most interesting lectures in the master LIVE was driven by Prof. Yaqoub Ashhab from Palestine Polytechnic University. Yaqoub introduced the use of bioinformatics tools in vaccinology, and I could not agree more that the new vaccine era will be the reverse vaccinology. Reverse vaccination starts with the whole pathogen s proteome and screens it in silico until few hundreds or even less proteins, looking for the proteins that are shared by different strains and located in the outer membrane, peptides with good MHC presentation etc, saving time and money. We have available huge amount of data and different bioinformatics tools, we just need to know how to use it and extract relevant information, even before stepping into a lab. Of course, we need to validate the final data with lab work, because lab-work cannot be replaced totally. The reverse vaccination is fashionable moreover new bioinformatics tools could be developed. For instance imagine developing a bioinformatics tool that could predict conformational and lineal epitopes based on antibody sequence (keys). We will be able to immunize mice, sequencing the best antibodies and find the epitopes (locks). Afterwards we can find the proteins with the epitopes that trigger a proper immune response to develop a vaccine. Reverse Vaccinology, What a powerful methodology!! Or what do you think about? Sergio Linares Fernández, LIVE student (Spain) January 20, 2017 BUHORO BUHORO NIRWO RUGEDO This is a proverb I heard many times in the land of a thousand hills and a million smiles, Rwanda.

The idea it expresses is incredibly simple, yet at the same time it communicates something tremendously vast: slow and steady wins the race. What can I relate to when I hear it and think of where my life is right now, here in LIVE? It makes me think of the persistence I ve had during my life, the long hours and the ambition to want to grow into a person I m happy with; all in all, the steps I ve taken (slowly and steadily) to be here. Entering this program (winning the race) hasn t all been about academic performance. It s also been about people, life changing experiences, triumph (but also failure), achievements (but also mistakes), learning how to interact and develop social skills, realizing the importance of networking and something of the upmost relevance in the vaccinology field: communication. Communication is essential for us scientists, business people and/or science informants to make difficult concepts comprehendible to everyone around us. Communication is necessary in order for basic research to be applied to industry with all the corresponding benefits. This pragmatic approach is what I expect to learn in LIVE in order to continue as a contender in the race of my professional life. Oliver Pérez Howell, LIVE student (Spain) February 10, 2017 Hola Barcelona! Being one of the most vibrant cities in Europe, Barcelona served as the first home for the first cohort of LIVE Masters students. It is a marvelous city above Mediterranean coast and has a warm temperate climate that is easy to love. It has a rich history with exquisite culture. It prides itself with old churches, airy plazas, big museums, interesting shops, and unique street performers; it has the best of what Europe can offer. As the first semester draws near, the cohort is now preparing for the next set of coursework in another European city. We say "Hallo Antwerpen!" Peter Francis Raguindin, LIVE student (Philippines) December 2016 SCALE DECONSTRUCTION As a doctor, I got acquainted with the human homeostatic mechanisms that take place in our fragile body and how, upon deregulation, the spectrum of our pathology arises. I palpated enlarged lymph nodes, auscultated murmurs, and discerned the skin colors, that imply disease from health. I took pride in my novel expertise and the universe rushed to point out how far from an expert I was. Like in a Kinder egg, six months of immunology were my present of knowledge; this time I "palpated the texture of receptors surfaces and auscultated the fine-tuned

intracellular engine signaling our cells loom to weave genetic messages, in a dynamic interplay that left me aghast. Used as I was to the scale of our own body I watched my perception stretch inwards to the fascinating ranks of the microcosm. Immunology is all about countless, tiny details fitting a bigger picture. I was lucky enough to get a glimpse of this picture outside a lecture hall. Living first time abroad I extended my perception towards the other end of the scale to fit the new stimuli; different cultures, languages and skin colors this time signifying the complex and beautiful variety of what human experience can be. Asimakis Avramopoulos, LIVE student (Greece) May 2017 TOXIC... In our medical school, there is one word to describe a person who is swamped with work; "Toxic." Handling twenty critically ill patients alone is toxic. Getting three exams done in a day is toxic. Apparently, studying in Barcelona for Immunology is also toxic. Yes. Our life in Barcelona, one of Europe's most vibrant city, is not a life on a bed of roses. In a day, we usually have two to three subjects to attend. We usually burn the midnight oil weekly for exams. We do have deadlines to meet. For most of us, we might be biting off more than we can chew. Immunology is one of the most daunting subjects there is. It is a field that is novel with scientific discoveries almost every day. The volume of knowledge is daunting. But the good thing is, we are learning it as a science that has huge implications for vaccines. We are learning to usher in innovative ways on how to impact health outcomes through vaccines. LIVE Program. Toxic. But all the sacrifices are all worth it. Knowing that in the future, we will be making a difference by saving more lives through vaccines. Peter Francis Raguindin, LIVE student (Philippines) April, 2017 LASSA FEVER Lassa fever is a viral hemorrhagic fever caused by Lassa virus and transmitted by rodents and through contaminated foods. It was named after Lassa town in Bornu State, Nigeria where the causative virus was first discovered. This was almost half a century ago and Lassa fever has since become endemic in Nigeria with almost yearly outbreaks. The disease has spread to other countries in the West African Region leading to approximately 5,000 deaths yearly. Although several efforts are being geared towards controlling the disease, outbreaks are still prevalent due poor disease surveillance, inadequate public awareness and non-identification of specific symptoms associated with the virus. The United Nations through the Sustainable Development Goal 3 initiative aims to control the spread of communicable diseases by developing vaccines; and several studies are currently under-way to develop a vaccine for Lassa fever. Nigerian virologists have also expressed their commitments to contribute to the global effort of developing a vaccine for Lassa fever. In order to combat Lassa fever, West African countries need to take collective and active steps to prevent and control the spread of the virus at its early stage, just as was done in the fight of the Ebola Virus Disease. 10 The UJM LIVE team and the dean Fabrice Zeni have wellcomed the students in a festive atmosphere. Stéphane Paul, Communication Manager (UJM, France) December, 2017 Do you actually believe in Life after LIVE? par IGNATIUS RYAN ADRIAWAN, le 30/01/2018 With the graduation coming near, a question is becoming more pertinent among LIVE students: What to do next? For that reason, we held the event Life after LIVE ; a whole day activity focused on career options for new vaccinologists. We invited experts with different backgrounds, working on different facets of vaccinology to give us more insights on our options after the program. Professor Mathias Faure (our project supervisor) opened the event, as he welcomed the speakers and students. Dr. Juliet Bryant of Fondation Mérieux recounted her interesting life story, with which she delivered her message of not being afraid of making turns in life. The message was in a way complemented by Dr. Uzma Hasan of Centre International de Recherche en Infectiologie, who said that whatever choice we make, we must give our 100% in what is in front of us. Afterwards, Dr Philippe Duclos, a former expert of WHO-SAGE, explained the importance of public health in vaccinology. His talk was brought further by Dr. Angus Thomson of Sanofi-Pasteur, a professional in vaccine communication and hesitancy with an unusual personal life story. While the morning session gave the general overviews on different career paths, the afternoon session gave more practical information for the attendees to jumpstart their respective careers. Dr. Françoise Monéger of École Normale Supérieure-Lyon, presented an overview of PhD life. Katell Martin, a Human Resources expert from Sanofi, gave us useful tips and tricks of job applications. Anna Prugnola of GSK, shared an interesting overview and insights on working in a corporate environment. Finally, Prof. Christine Delprat, the LIVE Master Program Coordinator, delivered the closing remarks in developing a career in the 21st century. The event was well received by the students. The organizing team sincerely wishes that the event brought real impact on the personal endeavors of all LIVE students.
