2 The The (CDI) brings together all of the research teams within UTT (almost 120 researchers) representing the main disciplines in engineering, information sciences & technologies, human & social sciences. Assisted in their research activities by technical staff, and using state-of-the-art equipment, they bring their scientific expertise to support the objectives of the and its institutional and industrial partners. The cross-cutting interdisciplinary theme of Science and Technologies for Risk Management provides a shared framework for the work carried out jointly by teams. The s researchers conduct high-level scientific work in their fields of expertise, often in partnership with other institutions and research centers: CNRS (French National Scientific Research Centre); INRIA (French National for Research in Computer Science and Control); CEA (French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission), as well as with economic and social stakeholders. The also aims to develop interfaculty collaboration among project teams. The s technical equipment and experimentation platforms are key assets in forging scientific and industrial partnerships. More than 80% of funding, excluding in-house researchers salaries, comes from research contracts, more than a quarter of which are signed with companies. To address current national and international research challenges, the is faced with a need to boost its human resources in order to enhance its profile in an increasingly growing competitive environment. As a result, researchers from the EPF Engineering School have joined the s existing research teams. At international level, the has built up an extensive network of collaborations over the years, enabling it to recruit doctoral and post-doctoral students from outside France. Together with UTT s doctoral school, it supports the joint doctoral ( cotutelle ) program, which also helps strengthen international links. AREAS OF EXCELLENCE Project teams are responsible for conducting highlevel research in their areas of expertise. This is achieved through publications in leading journals, extensive involvement in major national and European projects, successful technology transfer, and wideranging international exchanges all of which demonstrate the quality of the research carried out at the institute. The quality of the s work has been recognized through the award of two CNRS chairs of excellence in the fields of nanotechnologies and industrial ecology. The currently comprises eight project teams which represent a wide array of research interests and areas of expertise: Sustainable development Advanced mesh generation Systems modeling and dependability Nanotechnologies and optical instrumentation Industrial systems optimization Autonomous networks Mechanical systems and concurrent engineering Cooperative technologies for collective cognition and communities To boost synergies among teams across different disciplines, UTT began bringing together its research capabilities in 2005 as part of a coordinated focus on the transverse topic of Science and Technologies for Risk Management. This led to the creation of a joint research unit (UMR) 6279 with CNRS on January The joint research unit focuses on: Advanced planning and design for risk control of complex systems and networks: this work concerns, for example, the vulnerability of critical infrastructure, reduction of environmental impact, and transport of hazardous materials; Risk management and control of complex systems and networks: this area concerns in particular monitoring of systems such as water distribution networks, radioactive waste, e-health, and maintenance decision support; Management of crisis and post-crisis situations: development of decision-support tools.

3 montage-pochetteicd_mise en page 1 07/07/11 10:25 Page3 CDI The Joint Research Unit Science and Technologies for Risk Management The Joint Research Unit Science and Technologies for Risk Management (CNRS Joint Research Unit 6279), created on 1 January 2010, brings together cross-cutting research activities relating to the field of risk management within the Charles Delaunay. The unit s aim is to develop and implement advanced methods, tools and systems for improving management of risks associated with technological and socio-technical systems. It draws on multidisciplinary expertise from within several different engineering and human/social science domains. Thanks to such synergies, the joint research unit occupies a unique niche in France, allowing it to study risks and threats that present major social challenges, and which can only be approached on a multidisciplinary basis. The goal is to develop cross-cutting focuses with a common, recognized scope, while retaining a commitment to excellence. Areas of study include: vulnerability of complex systems and networks (in the physical, social and communications sense) for the purpose of advance planning; optimization of design performance in a risk environment (including eco-design); assessment of the dependability of technological systems (including maintenance); e-health; monitoring of technological systems (for example smart sensor networks); and decision support for crisis situations (for example emergency organization and logistics).

5 CDI Links with industry TWO CHAIRS OF EXCELLENCE UTT and the CNRS agreed to recruit two associate professors in 2010 for the Joint Research Unit Science and Technologies for Risk Management as part of the chairs of excellence program. One will work on the topic of nanoparticles and sensors within the LNIO (Nanotechnology, Instrumentation and Optics Laboratory) program; the other will support the development of activities pursued by the Research Centre for Environmental Studies and Sustainability (CREIDD) in the field of industrial ecology. SCIENTIFIC INTEREST GROUPING ON SYSTEMS SURVEILLANCE, DEPENDABILITY AND SECURITY (GIS 3SGS) Systems surveillance, dependability and security has emerged as a universally relevant topic in today s world, and in particular at national and European level. This scientific interest grouping (known by its French acronym, GIS 3SGS) brings together public and private research bodies as well as players from industry with the aim of developing a strong multidisciplinary community with a national and international profile in this field. To achieve this, the 3SGS group draws together scientific developments from multiple disciplines within a single methodological approach that can be applied to different domains (such as energy, transport, networks, systems of systems, etc.). As a university of technology, like its sister institutions in Northern Europe, the Troyes University of Technology (UTT) has three core missions: education, research and knowledge/technology transfer. The latter are based on assessments carried out by teaching/research staff within their specific area of expertise, and by the implementation of research and development programs in partnership with companies. More than half UTT s research resources are provided via joint projects with industry (contracts, interministerial fund (FUI), ANR, etc.). UTT files an average of seven patents every year, and grants two licenses annually, placing it on a par with international standards in terms of intellectual property. The university has a strong focus on technology maturation, taking research from scientific demonstration to the pre-industrial stage, providing a platform for the transfer of inventions. It proposes complete development packages (encompassing prototype, technology transfer, market/initial promotion, etc.) to its partners, in particular SMEs. UTT is a member of the MINALOGIC, MATERALIA and IAR competitiveness clusters, and participates in their scientific councils.
