2 EUROPEAN SYMPOSUM CULTURE AND EDUCATION #6 Friday 27 and Saturday 28 June 2014 Introduction Emergence(s) What are the elements and impulses present during the emergence of artist- or community- led creation? How are projects born from a very intimate, direct source of creativity, when a creative process is inspired by local issues, social realities, current events or other personal experiences? And what happens when these projects meet large cultural organisations? As in the moment of their creation, such projects are not yet defined and their possible results are not yet predictable, analysing the emergence of creative impulses and projects necessarily imposes a retroactive perspective. Their development is characterised by a high level of required flexibility and constant adaptation, which is voluntarily upheld for as long as possible. This of course implies a certain level of uncertainty: the foundations of such projects might be precarious- or appear to be so in the beginning. These characteristics are seemingly incompatible with projects initiated by large cultural organisations, which demand more structure and need to mould actions into the organisation s logic, also facilitating communication and fundraising. Therefore, our symposium s focus on the emergence of informal creative processes, initiated by artists, small groups, communities or civil society, examines the effect it may have to bring such grassroots creativity in contact with institutional logic and promote existing collaborative projects. What can the benefits of such collaboration be? What impact do they have on cultural organisations? What kind of challenges and opportunities can arise? To seek to reproduce or give the floor to such creative processes can be a real risk, as results cannot be predicted- a source of uncertainty for the image and expectations of cultural organisations. How can we bring together these two seemingly opposite approaches? How can we maintain a margin of freedom within a more structured environment? Does a certain amount of liberty exist even in more traditional projects which are based on predefined frameworks? What challenges need we rally to in terms of communication or financial provisions? Ensuring clarity and in- depth discussions, this highly complex theme shall be examined from three separate, albeit overlapping, perspectives: - Emergence of artist- led creative/ artistic processes - Emergence of processes led by communities and small groups - Benefits, influences and challenges of collaboration with large cultural organisations These three perspectives will structure the 2014 Symposium.

Looking back on a first day of discussions Project presentation of Welsh National Opera s (WNO) Horizons Rhian Hutchings Head of education Dialogue between Philippe Foulquié, Founder and former director of la Friche La Belle de Mai, and Jan Goossens, Director of the KVS theatre in Brussels Discussions and debate Thematic debate What are the constraints, influences and benefits as well as challenges posed by informal creative processes for cultural organisations, and what responses can be highlighted? The challenges may be manifold: how to communicate and fundraise for a project when the final product is hard to predict? How can the organisation deal with this risk of uncertainty, especially in view of its brand and image? Do these processes influence the functioning of cultural organisations- and if yes, how?
