Developed a fast and direct time-domain structural analysis for a deformable or rigid 3D floating body with mooring-riser systems in the random seas. Derived the second order hydroelastic diffraction and radiation wave theory for a floating body. Outstanding accomplishments Achieved interacting motion dynamics and structural dynamics of both the deformable floating body and flexible mooring-riser system. Developed a control scheme for a high-accuracy dynamic positioning system (DPS) and integrated with the nonlinear hull-mooring-riser coupled dynamics. M.S. Kim, under review) Ongoing Project 1: Semi-active Magneto-Rheological damper for Tension Leg Platform or Spar (involved in Shell Malikai TLP project), Sponsor: Shell, Period: Aug 2014 ~ Sep 2017, Fund: $360,000 Integrated the Magneto-Rheological (MR) damper scheme into the 2-body hull-tendon-mooring-riserhawser coupled dynamic analysis for TLP and Semi-Submersible. Studied a conceptual feasibility for the MR damper in TLP and Semi-Submersible as single body cases. Developed numerical scheme to realize winch dynamics of hawser line between two floating bodies. Performed a comparative study between experiments and simulations for the Malikai TLP-Semi submersible (DTV) system. Developed hydroelastic analysis for the semi-submersible hull deformation interacting with multiple wind turbines and mooring lines in the random seas. Completed Project 2: Methodology and Algorithm Development for the Evaluation of Ultra-deepwater or Arctic Floating Platform Performance under Hazardous Sea Conditions, Sponsor: RPSEA 2014 Ultradeepwater Project, USA, Period: Jul 2014 ~ Oct 2016, Fund: $400,000 Wrote one of main technical chapters in the project proposal. Investigated hydroelastic interactions of arctic offshore floating platforms responding to static and dynamic ice impacts based on IceStruct, a JIP by DNV. Developed methodologies and numerical algorithms to calculate global nonlinear hydrodynamic loads for arctic and extreme offshore conditions including green waters and slamming impacts.

Delivered a FE numerical tool to analyze riser dynamics for a pre-described moving fairlead point. Clarified state of the art technologies to solve the mooring-riser dynamics in terms of lumped mass methods, rod element methods, and beam element methods with different extensible conditions. Consulted on the 2-body Malikai TLP-DTV system design; identified and suggested a couple of corrections in the preliminary hawser-mooring-riser-tendon designs. Verified experimental results of static offset and free decay tests for TLP against numerical results. Completed Project 2: Wave Energy Converter Design II, Sponsor: Jeju University, Korea, Period: Jun ~ Sep 2013, Fund: $30,000 (Exclusive Contributor) Designed a mooring system for 2-body wave energy conversion (WEC) system. Investigated global performance of the designed WEC system. Completed Project 3: Program Development of Hydroelasticity and Design Development of Offshore Platforms for Deep Water, Sponsor: GS E&C, Korea, Period: May 2011 ~ May 2013, Fund: $150,000 Developed the full set of numerical tools for comprehensive hydroelastic analysis of a slender pontoon with freely floating condition. Performed parametric hydroelastic analysis for elasticity and achieved fully coupled motion responses and dynamic stress resultants in the random seas, including the resonance phenomena. Performed statistical assessments to achieve representative design parameters. Exclusively involved in execution from planning to delivery; developed GUI-based program.
