If you do not know the answer... ASK!!!! 3 Volunteers, please.
According to the online etymology dictionary--early 14c., "subject or topic on which a person writes or speaks," from Old French tesme (13c., with silent -s- "indicating vowel length" [OED], Modern French thème) and directly from Latin thema "a subject, thesis," from Greek thema "a proposition, subject, deposit," literally "something set down," from root of tithenai "put down, place," from PIE *dhe-mn, from root *dhe- "to put, to do" (see factitious). Meaning "school essay" is from 1540s. Extension to music first recorded 1670s; theme song first attested Theme park is from 1960.

Definition: The theme of any literary work is the base that acts as a foundation for the entire literary piece. The theme links all aspects of the literary work with one another and is basically the main subject. The theme can be an enduring pattern or motif throughout the literary work, occurring in a complex, long winding manner or it can be short and succinct and provide a certain insight into the story. Example: The main theme in the play Romeo and Juliet was love with smaller themes of sacrifice, tragedy, struggle, hardship, devotion and so on.
Theme - The main thought expressed by a work. Essay questions may ask for discussion of the theme or themes of a work or may use the words meaning or meanings. The open question frequently asks you to relate a discussion on one subject to a meaning of the work as a whole. When preparing the novels and plays you might use on the open question, be sure to consider what theme or themes you would write about if you are asked to talk about a meaning of the work.
Theme The central idea or message of a work, the insight it offers into life. Usually theme is unstated in fictional works, but in nonfiction, the theme may be directly state, especially in expository or argumentative writing. Thesis In expository writing, the thesis statement is the sentence or group of sentences that directly expresses the author s opinion, purpose, meaning, or position. Expository writing is usually judged by analyzing how accurately, effectively, and thoroughly a writer has proven the thesis.
theme noun [C] (SUBJECT) the topic of discussion or writing: The theme of the conference was the changing role of women in modern society. literature, art A theme is also the main idea of a work of literature or art. theme noun [C] (MUSIC)
... And how is it facilitated by setting, characters, conflicts, and symbols?
How does the setting help facilitate this theme? How do the characters help facilitate this theme? How does the conflict help facilitate this theme? How do the symbols help facilitate this theme?
Filled with contrasts (light and dark; land and sea; heaviness and lightness; openness and closed-ness; melting vs. solid matter; curved shapes vs. sharp edges. The overall setting is one of desolation, perhaps even the mood of the painting.
Pocket Watches communicates personal time. Some are open; some are shut. Dead creature closed eyes, smile/frown Dead tree which seemingly points to the horizon (hope?)
Joy and Pain Current and Past Light vs. Dark Land vs. Water
Pocket Watches (Personal Memories) Dead Tree (Direction) Cliffs (Hardships/Risks) Oceans (Timelessness/Persistence) The anvil (heaviness) The land (existing time) The horizon (hope) The dead creature (mixed emotions)
Personal time continues to exist in good experiences and bad, leading to future events of happiness and sadness, all housed in the photo album of the human mind.
In Dali s painting The Persistence of Memory, times of joy and pain seem to co-exist simultaneously, yet each finds a separate identity according to their placement in the painting.
ReQ4 How does the setting help facilitate this theme? How do the characters help facilitate this theme? How does the conflict help facilitate this theme? How do the symbols help facilitate this theme?
How does the setting help facilitate this theme? How do the characters help facilitate this theme? How does the conflict help facilitate this theme? How do the symbols help facilitate this theme? vrg

How does the setting help facilitate this theme? How do the characters help facilitate this theme? How does the conflict help facilitate this theme? How do the symbols help facilitate this theme?
This is THE POINT! It is NOT a moral to the story or a lesson that should be learned. It is a common human experience voiced through literature.
