2 Panel Discussion Topics - 1 What/where is the role of research(ers) in the innovation value chain? depends on the adopted definition of innovation innovation => novel, original, not seen before? vs. new products and services innovation value at which level? old, long debated issue of basic/blue sky research vs. applied research and development quantum physics, general relativity theory vs. a new software architecture, service, application, device, is fulfilling Moore s Law innovation? Researchers (can) contribute to standards by doing research, e.g., new ontology, compression technique, Create a better image for standardization committees How early in the R&D innovation chain should standardization be considered? Developing a proof-of-concept prototype will usually require to develop non-standard solutions but they are partially based on some existing standards (e.g., operating system, data compression, ) Decision: Be compatible or develop something new, make it dominant becoming a (de facto) standard Slide 3
