3 Fulfilling skills shortage gap Critical skills shortage in engineering arena require special investment to develop high quality engineers with practical skills. The new-build programme and improvement initiatives provide Eskom with a unique opportunity to develop skills and develop expertise. OEM and tertiary institutions locally and abroad are keen to partner with Eskom. need to establish Eskom Power Plant Engineering Institute (EPPEI) Increase the number of Power Plant industry focused MSc and PhDs engineers. Ensure South African universities participate fully in transferring and localizing new technologies currently being offered to Eskom by OEMs. Ensure South African universities are actively involved in solving Eskom specific engineering problems. Leverage the expertise of international universities and utilities. EPPEI programme initially designed for engineers already employed by Eskom to study full-time for postgraduate qualification.

10 EPPEI strategy for Phase 2 ( ) Transform EPPEI to become a pan-africa self-sustainable Institute at the end of Phase 2 (2022) by: 1. Developing Postgraduate Qualification (PGQ) This PGQ and associated curriculum should become self-funded and owned by SA universities at end of Phase Complementing the high level engineer skill development with techologist and technician skill development in power industry through partnership with universities of technology (UoT) 3. Having high level inter-university research/engineering programmes (IUP) to serve the needs of power utilities and OEMs in Africa Research to be fully funded by customers (including Eskom) at the end of Phase Create an Inter-university governing body to manage the above activities. This governing body should be flexible enough to host members of other funders: DST, Dti, HEM, OEMs, APUA, etc 10

11 Research/Engineering studies: IUP Objective: While maintaining disciplines of the 8 EPPEI Specialisation Centers, focus the research efforts and engineering studies around larger key issues/themes that will directly add value to power utilities and improve synergies by addressing multi-disciplinary approach. 13 Conclusion The business case of the above EPPEI strategy was presented in March 2015 to Eskom Corporate committees and was confirmed: o o That good progress was done so far by EPPEI and there is a definite need to carry on with the program for developing more high level skills in power plant engineering Sustainability should be looked for through:. Inter-university collaborative research programmes to be launched Creating a PGQ in Power Plant Engineering to be established. Complement of high level engineer skill development with technologist training Creating a Consortium of universities. Broadening the program to non-eskom and non-sa students Attracting other funders (DST, Dti, HEM, OEMS, power utilities, etc.). Cooperating with African utilities through APUA.. 8, 9 June o An Eskom budget to support the EPPEI program until 2021

15 Training: Postgraduate Qualification Lead: Stephan Heyns Objectives: Establish a strong SA academic basis for power plant engineering specialists Significantly broaden the EPPEI impact in Eskom Create an internationally competitive product which can be sold to the African market Content Create a power plant engineering 6 lead universities with a national portfolio (ca. 18) of focused courses. Students will register at one of the 6 lead universities but could register for credits at other EPPEI universities. PGQ will be available to students from traditional universities and universities of technology. Main tasks to implement: Refine course portfolio August 2015 Feedback on feasibility at all universities May 2015 Consolidation of feedback June 2015 Establish web-based power generation repository July 2015 EPPEI approval August 2015 Faculty board approval (where ready) March 2016 Pilot implementation Full implementation 2017
