1 Design Technology Overview Product Design Key Stage 3 Curriculum During key stage 3 students participate in all aspects of design, make and evaluate activities using a wide range of different media. Years 7, 8, and 9 operate on a carousel system, where students will experience 9 weeks in the following disciplines: Year 7 Product Design (Graphics) - Pop Up Book (Resistant Materials) and Pull Along Toy Within their time in Product Design Graphics and Resistant Materials, pupils will develop their understanding of different materials/tools and media and develop their skills in designing and making a creative quality product. Activities will include: Producing a basic specification (card mechanisms) Simple CAD/Cam (2D design, Stika) Making final product Product Design (Food) Basic Skills Within their time in Food, pupils will develop their understanding of what a balanced and healthy diet is. They will develop their practical skills within the food area and their skills in sensory analysis of their final products and be able to recommend what they could do to develop their product further. Activities will include: Introduction to a wide range of food equipment Introduction to healthy eating Skill based practical (Fruit Salad, Pasta Salad, Bolognaise sauce, Fruit Crumble, Scones) Health and safety of equipment and processes Product Design (Textiles) - Party Food Cushions Within their time in textiles, pupils will develop their knowledge and understanding of basic techniques used in textiles. They will design and make a novelty food cushion which will develop their creative skills and as well as their practical skills. Activities will include: - - mood board on party foods Health and safety Making a quality product using a range of different tools and materials
2 Year 8 During year 8 pupils will further develop their knowledge and skills working with different materials/tools and media, including basic electronics. Activities will include: Product Design (Graphics) - High Visibility Badge Electronic circuit production Making final product Packaging design and make Product Design - Designing in the style of Memphis and Slot Together Storage System Modelling design solutions Making a quality product using a range of different materials Product Design (Food) Healthy Eating Within their time in Food, pupils will deepen their understanding of what a balanced and healthy diet is. They will begin to look at functions of ingredients, how to season food and choices that impact people s choice on what ingredients they would use in their dishes. Pupils will continue to develop their practical skills further and understand more about food safety. Activities will include: product analysis / Fair trade / seasonal calendar for fruit and vegetables / healthy eating Skill based practical of equipment and processes
3 Product Design (Textiles) - Wacky Hats Within their time in textiles, pupils will continue to deepen their knowledge and understanding of decorative and construction techniques used in textiles. Pupils will be encouraged to think outside the box for their creative design skills and as well as their practical skills. Activities will include: Making a quality product using a range of different materials Year 9 During year 9 pupils will further develop their knowledge and skills working with different materials/tools and designing and modelling using different media, including CAD/CAM. Activities will include: Product Design (Graphics) - Desk Tidy (Pop Art) 2D Design Computer Aided Design and Manufacture SolidWorks- 3D Computer Aided Design Final design configured for laser production Produce computer graphic designs Making final product using acrylic, line bending and subliminal printing Product Design (Resistant Materials) - Alessi Clock Project 2D Design Produce computer graphic designs Making final product using MDF, acrylic, line bending subliminal printing, vacuum forming
4 Testing and Evaluation Year 9 - Product Design (Food) Understanding my diet (Teenagers diets) Within Food in year 9 the pupils will look at a wide range of different dietary needs for specific diets. They will continue to develop their understanding of different functions of ingredients and how people s lifestyles impact their dietary needs. Pupils will continue to develop high practical skills and adapt recipes for specific dietary needs. Activities will include: Understanding the main 5 nutrients within the diet. Developing meals that will support a range of different specific diets Researching into existing products to develop their own products / recipe ideas Skill based practical s (range of complex skills) Health and Safety of equipment and processes Production planning Testing and evaluation Year 9 Product Design (Textiles) IPad cover Within their time in textiles, pupils will continue to deepen their knowledge and understanding of a wide range of decorative and construction techniques used in textiles. Pupils will be encouraged to think outside the box for their creative design skills and as well as their practical skills. Activities will include: Researching into a range of existing products Producing a design brief for a specific target market Producing a specification that reflects their design problem Creating their own pattern pieces for their style of IPad cover Making a high quality product using a wide range of decorative techniques to develop surface decoration Testing and evaluation final product
