EFT & MINDFULNESS CENTRE TRAINING PROSPECTUS Professional courses in EFT & Mindfulness 98% of participants would recommend us to others HOW TO BECOME AN INTERNATIONAL ACCREDITED TRAINER OF MINDFULNESS IN EDUCATION 1

INTRODUCTION A new way of thinking, feeling and living. Hello and thank you for your interest in training with us. My name is Helena Fone and I am the founder of the EFT & Mindfulness Centre and the creator of the Mindfulness in Education programme. My background is in Psychotherapy and I also integrate complementary therapies into my practice. My interest in Meditation began 40 years ago and in 2012 I took the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Course and the Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy course with Mindful Living, approved by Oxford University. I became interested in teaching adults and young people and undertook the formal accredited course with the Mindfulness in Schools Project (MiSP) in the UK. I have been delivering training courses in the complementary therapy field for 14 years. I have delivered mindfulness courses to over 200 educators, psychologists, social workers, adults and children. I am listed on the MiSP and UK Mental Health Foundation website as a recommended Teacher of Mindfulness. I have met with some amazing and inspiring meditation leaders on my travels to India, Vietnam, Cambodia, USA and other places. I became attracted to Jon Kabat-Zinn s secular approach to mindfulness and the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh as they combine the ancient eastern wisdom with modern western science. Why train with us?. We vet all applicants for eligibility, competence and integrity We have specially written curricula for Teachers, Primary and Secondary Schools. Support is ongoing during and following certification and accreditation The Centre is accredited by the National Council of Psychotherapists, the International Institue of Complementary Therapists and Approved Insurance Representative with Balens Insurers Ltd. The founder is listed on the Be Mindful and Mindfulness in Schools website. Our Trainers are all expert professsionals who offer a wealth of experience and knowledge in teaching, meditation and mind/body practices. Our Trainers have met the strict criteria to qualify as Trainers of Mindfulness in Education and follow our tried and tested age appropriate curricula programme with specific pedagogy. We follow Best Practice Teacher Guidelines I can honestly say that I am deeply grateful to have found mindfulness and for the opportunity to work with educators, children and young adults who have been a joy to teach. Founder of the EFT & Mindfulness Centre Creator of the Mindfulness in Education Programme 2

Who can teach or train in Mindfulness? In recent years, there has been an explosion of interest in mindfulness with widespread media coverage, bestselling books and a remarkable uptake of online resources. Mindfulness means paying attention to what s happening in the present moment in the mind, body and external environment, with an attitude of curiosity and kindness. There has been a huge increase in academic research on the subject with more than 500 peer-reviewed scientific journal papers now being published every year. Meanwhile developments in neuroscience and psychology are illuminating the mechanisms of mindfulness. As Mindfulness gains popularity, training schools and teachers are popping up all over the place. As yet, mindfulness is not regulated (and some argue why should it be) so there are no laws in place as to who can or cannot teach Mindfulness so we set out to try and do our best to ensure best practice by setting up our own Best Practice Guidelines. Anyone can practice Mindfulness on their own, regardless of their past mental history but if you are teaching it, then we ask that you be aware of its limitations. These will be taught to you on the course. There is an option to take the postgraduate route which takes approximately 4 years. This pathway leads to an educational qualification in mindfulness. At the time of writing, these courses were offered by Oxford and Bangor Universities in the UK. If you re seeking a trainer of Mindfulness, it would be a good idea to do some research to find a trainer who: 1. Actually embodies Mindfulness and practices it on a daily basis 2. Appears to be not just motivated by the money 3. Demonstrates integrity and follows standards of teaching and training Before embarking on any of our courses, participants should give careful consideration to whether they are able to meet the necessary commitments contained within the professional training. It is important that students commit to attending all aspects of the course. 4

Our Training Pathways to becoming a Trainer of Mindfulness in Education Attending any of these course does not give entitlement to train others to become a Trainer of Mindfulness in Education. 1. Non-educators may attend the 6 week Mindfulness for Educators course 2. Only educators may attend the Teacher of Mindfulness in the Classroom course 3. Educators and non-educators may attend the Mindfulness in Education course. 5

At the EFT & Mindfulness Centre, offer two pathways to becoming a trainer of Mindfulness. Please click on the appropriate weblinks below to find out more regarding entry criteria, course content, certification, preparing for the course and more. When you have completed the Trainer programme, you will be able to teach children, teachers, company directors, parents and curious individuals (with limitations). If you re not sure whether you meet our entry criteria, we are more than happy to discuss options with you. Our training places a very strong focus on the experiential and embodiment aspect of mindfulness. The training also encourages a strong understanding of the theoretical principles. 1. As an Educator Eligibility criteria can be found on the website. Step 1. Mindfulness for Educators course. This is a 6 week course, approximately 2hrs per week. An accredited Trainer in your locality may be found from the Mindfulness in Education website. If you are an educator, you will need a Certificate of Attendance from this course as a pre-requisite to progressing onto stage 2. Ongoing mindfulness practice (production of Daily Journal) is required before progressing onto the next part of the course. Step 2. Teacher of Mindfulness in the Classroom. Please note this course will give a complete and solid foundation for you to teach children and adolescents in education for non-profit. Please note however that this qualification is not intended to equip you to design or develop any mindfulness based courses. You will have the option to teach the 6 Week Mindfulness in Education course once you have completed accreditation and paid for the training materials. OR Step 3 (optional). Trainer of Mindfulness in Education course. If you wish to teach outside of the classroom and charge for your services, you can apply for this course instead. If you have taken the Teacher of Mindfulness in the Classroom course, you do NOT need to attend this course but there would be a charge for the use of the training materials. Entry is not automatic as you will need to demonstrate that you are a suitable candidate by meeting certain criteria which can be found on the website. 6

2. As a Professional You do not need to be a qualified teacher to apply for the Mindfulness in Education Trainer programme. However, we are an accredited training school and such, all applicants must meet strict criteria before being admitted onto the Trainer course. Eligibility criteria can be found on the website 1. Mindfulness for Educators Attendance on this course OR provide proof of attending an 8 week mindfulness course (such as MBCT or MBSR) approved by the EFT & Mindfulness Centre. 2. Holds a professional qualification in mental or physical health care, education or social care, or equivalent life experience recognized by the EFT & Mindfulness Centre. Please enquire if not sure. All applications will be decided on merit. We may accept certified yoga teachers for example so please enquire. 3. Can demonstrate the embodiment of mindfulness, and that the key concepts and practices are grounded in your own experience of mindfulness. This means engaging in a mindful meditation practice on a regular basis of at least 6 months duration before signing up for the course. 4. Agrees to abide by the Mindfulness in Education teaching policy that instructs you not teach or train Mindfulness to anyone who has a history of or who is undergoing treatment for a mental health condition, unless qualified to do so. Once the above criteria have been met, you can apply to enrolled onto the Trainer of Mindfulness in Education course. Accreditation as a Trainer of Mindfulness in Education At the end of each course you will receive a Certificate of Attendance and a temporary license to teach mindfulness. You will need to submit your Accreditation Form to your trainer within 12 months of being certified and you will be required to Deliver at least two mindfulness courses with feedback sheets Provide Video footage of delivering one training module in Mindfulness in Education. 9 How can we help? As one of our trainers, our mission is to give you as much support as possible. We do that by giving you as much access to materials as you need and providing supervision so you can network with other trainers. We have a blog site and a Facebook page too. If there is something you don t have, please let us know and we ll gladly look into it We hope we have answered your questions and if you cannot find what you are looking for from the Mindfulness in Education website, we are more than happy to hear from you. We are a relatively new training school and are building up trainers throughout the world. If you cannot find a trainer in your location or find it difficult to attend a live training event, please contact us and we can find the appropriate solution for you. This may be online learning or distance learning with a live tutor. Whatever your needs, we will do our best to accommodate them. One you express an interest in a course, full course details will be sent to you. Referrals We receive many enquiries from schools and we will refer them to the MiE website to find a Trainer in their location. You may wish to know that these are the typical questions asked by schools in the UK. How long have you been practising mindfulness? What qualifications and training do you have? Do you have experience of working and teaching in schools? How much experience of delivering the mindful course of lessons to pupils in schools do you have? The way our timetable works we can only schedule six hour long lessons (one hour a week) rather than ten; is it possible to tailor the course to fit this? Would we be able to request references from other schools that you have worked at? Have you undergone recent safeguarding and Prevent training? Note: We may be able to supply references if required. If the country you work in requires you to have a license or permit to work with children, you will need to discuss this with the school or organisation you will be working with. 9

How much does it cost? If you re investing any money into a training course, you need to know exactly what you get and if there are any ongoing costs. We pride ourselves on being as transparent and competitive as possible so if you see a better offer out there, please let us know. Here is one example: Training Fees 2017 with Breathworks: Organisation Individual Concession Introductory Teacher Training (TTi) Advanced Teacher Training (TTa) Mindful Movement two-day non-residential training Study materials (see details below for discounts) Supervision of 8 week practice course & evaluation fee One-off student membership fee Plus cost of 8 week entry course and annual accreditation fee of * 3183* 2508* Our fees 6 week Mindfulness for Educator s course: Open to educators and non-educators Face to face or interactive online course is 150 Discounts may apply for educators. Two Day Teacher of Mindfulness in the Classroom: Open to educators only. Price on application Two Day Trainer of Mindfulness in Education: Open to educators and non-educators Face to face or interactive online course is 750 For this fee, you will receive ALL the materials (including how to teach Teachers, Primary and Secondary school pupils). You can tailor the courses to suit but you must not radically change the content. Details of this will be given when you attend the course. Delivering one course will recoup your initial investment, and more. 10

Additional costs: Accredited Trainers will receive a certificate and be listed on the Mindfulness in Education website for a fee of 25/ 20/$30 per annum. Featured members of the EFT Register will be listed for free. Appearance on the Mindfulness in Education website will lend visibility, authenticity and credibility to prospective interested parties, businesses and schools. Regular maintenance of mindfulness practice, supervision (approx. 15/$25/ 18 x 3 a year) and teaching must be ongoing. Still not sure? Below is an extract from our course prospectus which explains why mindfulness is in demand in education. Why Mindfulness in Education? Mindfulness practice in schools enables children to recognise and overcome the many ways in which we tend to get caught up in rumination, distraction and resistance. They reveal the inherent ability of the mind and body to rebalance and sustain wellbeing and help us to discover positive new perspectives, behaviours and solutions. [Mental Health Foundation, 2011].when well taught and when practised regularly it (mindfulness) has been shown to be capable of improving mental health and wellbeing, mood, self esteem, self regulation, positive behaviour and academic learning. [ Professor Katherine Weare: A review of the evidence on mindfulness with children and young people] The Department for Education (DfE) should designate, as a first step, three teaching schools to pioneer mindfulness teaching, co-ordinate and develop innovation, test models of replicability and scalability and disseminate best practice. 2. Given the DfE s interest in character and resilience, we propose a comparable Challenge Fund of 1 million a year to which schools can bid for the costs of training teachers in mindfulness. [All Party Parliamentary Group Report 2015.] 11

Apart from the UK, countries around the world are introducing mindfulness into education. The US has led innovation on how to introduce mindfulness into schools with over 45 variations of mindfulness programmes for schools. Thirty years of informed basic research and, more recently, neuroscience, offer compelling evidence to support the use of employing mindfulness practices in education. The application of mindfulness by students and teachers has the potential to improve academic achievement, mental health, and positive relationships. Scientific studies show that mindfulness training develops concentration, attention, executive function, (planning, decision making, and impulse control), emotional balance, pro-social behaviour, compassion and promotes mental well- being. educating teachers now practice mindfulness themselves and often progress onto how to implement mindfulness into the classroom. Research on mindfulness in schools shows how children and teens can learn to become calmer and more focused while at school and at home, become more compassionate towards themselves and other children, and improve their overall school performance. More and more educators are exploring the use of contemplative or mindfulness-based approaches to teaching. Through these approaches they are learning to reduce stress (for teacher and student alike), enhance and improve classroom climates, and are helping students to calm their bodies and minds, focus their attention, and even open their hearts. Much of the success of these approaches is about being able to recognize and properly tend to behavioural patterns. Evidence suggests that regular mindful awareness practice changes how our body and brain respond to stress, possibly strengthening connections in the prefrontal cortex and reducing reactivity in our limbic system, supporting self-reflection and self-regulation. These functions play a critical role in education for both teacher and pupil. To learn, one must engage their prefrontal cortex to focus and monitor their attention to inhibit impulsive tendencies towards distraction. There is a weblink below that illustrates the benefits mindfulness has for school staff. There is also the potential for mindfulness to help in confronting the mental health challenges facing many schools. Attainment in school cannot be achieved if a child has difficult emotions and they haven t the skills to navigate this, it is very hard for them to be motivated, to persist at tasks and to attain. On the other hand, if a child is attaining at all costs and putting intense pressure on themselves, this can have a damaging impact on their mental health. Below are some weblinks that will give you more information on Mindfulness in Education. 13 What they say about our training What would you give the course in terms of being enjoyable and interesting? 41 Excellent 2 OK How much do you think you have learned during the course? 40 A Great Deal 3 Some In the future, how likely are you to use any of the techniques you have learned? 41 Very likely 2 Might do What has changed you as a result of this course? 40 positive comments 3 No comment (*See some comments below) What has changed you as a result of this course? I am learning how to live every moment of my life in a mindful way... I try to be calmer when faced with a lot of tension. I also try to focus on today and try to leave aside tomorrow When I find myself rushing into multi-tasking, I try to put into practice what I have learned I have found that in trigger situations where usually I would lose it. I am able to keep calm and think clearly. I am able to enjoy the small things in life more.. I learnt to find time for myself & to practice mindfulness. I have started to do things more calmly, thinking of the process rather than the outcome and panicking about the outcome. I am more able to deal with stressful situations..i am more aware of how my thoughts are more like assumptions and perceptions, note based on facts, which as a result caused anxiety. It has helped me to reflect on my actions and reactions. My pupils didn t know they could use mindfulness to manage their anger It helped me to appreciate life as it is.to cherish every moment of the day. The course was well balanced and I liked all the session. I have learned to stop and breath when things get overwhelming. I am empathising more. I have invested more time in practicing mindfulness. Recently I had experienced a very stressful situation and I decided to spend a whole working day (vacation leave) in a meaningful mood this really helped me. 13
