FOTONIKA21 Slovenia Boris Vedlin, Paris
OBJECTIVES Foundation of the TP Fotonika21 and implementation of its SRA, set the following objectives to the TP members: Establish strategic links among mainly SME based photonics industries as well as towards key user industries and to align common R&D efforts accordingly; Ensure that knowledge generated through research is transformed into leading-edge technologies and processes, and ultimately into marketable products and sevice which are com-petitive on a global scale; Define medium to long term research and technological development objectives and lay down markers for achieving them; Provide for the necessary research environment capable of accelerating photonics research, enhancing cooperation, increasing public and private R&D investments and ensuring the mobilisation of the critical mass of resources.
GOALS / MOTIVATION To support Slovenia at its endeavours to help Europe to become the number one knowledge-based economic area in the world. To fight against challenges of the globalization and Asian and American competition. To increase competitivness of Slovenian photonics industry. To close gaps between industrial R&D departments and academic research groups.
GENERAL DATA Fotonika21 was founded in March 2006, based on Slovenian industry led initiative encouraged by the European Commission and SLO chambre of Commerce. Fotonika21 comprises 26 organizations (15 companies, 11 research/educational institutions). Within Fotonika21 there are 4 working groups, but really active are WG1 Life Sciences and Health and WG2 Industrial Production and Quality.
PHOTONICS IN EUROPE ECONOMIC IMPACT This publication ( Photonics in Europe Economic impact, December 2007) recognizes Slovenia as host of photonics production activities in the field of laser systems. We belive that Slovenia is one of the global leaders in terms of annuallly produced laser systems per inhabitant: people laser systems.
PHOTONICS IN SLOVENIA Photonics is one of the oldest and most important high technology fields in Slovenia. Beginning of photonics in Slovenia: year 1964, when company Iskra demonstrated operation of the first Slovenian made laser. During the period Iskra was one of the leading global companies providing laser rangefinding solutions for defence applications. After 1990 the defence industry in Slovenia collapsed but successful transformation into new industy has occured (medical and industrial laser based products).
TECHNOLOGY AGENCY (TIA) From 2007 on the Technology Agency of Slovenia (TIA) has been playing an active role in supporting technology platforms in Slovenia and cofinanancing activities such as cooperation between technology platforms and identification of resarch priorities being of interest to several technology platforms. Outcome: in Slovenia 22 technology platforms had been established. Fotonika21 has in 2007 indicated R&D work related to new diode pumped light sources for medical and industrial applications (including fiber lasers), as most important strategic project.
STRATEGIC LINKS Strategic links have been established between industrial, academic and end-user partners, being most important Slovenian photonics based organizations. The partners are conducting together R&D work to develop common platforms for later implementation into products in the way, that each industrial partner has the exclusive right to apply the common knowledge into its field of operations (microelectronics, dentistry, dermatology, ophthalmology, cosmetics etc).
COMPETENCE CENTER In 2009 national Competence Center for BioMedicine has been established. Members are 11 Slovenian based partners: 5 companies, 2 universities, 1 technical institute and 3 medical institutions. Most of the partners are members of the national TP FOTONIKA21.
