Network of Infrastructures Thematic pools of labs, equipment, modelling capabilities and pilot facilities across Europe Infrastructure AND associated expertise Purposes Facilitate access Coordinate investments across partners Limited budgets (0,5 FTE)
Complex low grade ores and wastes A huge potential for metals and minerals lies in complex, low grade ores and wastes: Low grade primary ores Landfills and stockpiles of historic industrial residues Slags, bottom ashes, fly ashes, dusts Liquid, metal containing wastewaters and effluents No one-size-fits-all solution, but a metallurgical toolbox required
Zero-Waste Metallurgical toolbox
Joining of complementary forces EIT Raw Materials core partners VTT, KULeuven, VITO and Ghent University join forces based on complementary expertises in the zero-waste metallurgical toolbox A number of regional and European initiatives H2020 project METGROW+ Flemish innovation program SIM-MaRes EIP Raw Materials commitment EIT Raw Materials Zero Waste Cluster of Networks of Infrastructure
METGROW + 8 M H2020 project partners in toal with 6 Flemish partners including MaRes driving forces Centered around the toolbox idea Double focus: Developing individual technology parts of the toolbox by working on 3 model streams Developing a methodology to combine parts of the toolbox for specific streams: - Maximum material recovery - Minimum cost
SIM-MaRes Research program funded by SIM (Strategic Initiative Materials), research funding by Flemish government Driven by knowledge institutes KULeuven, VITO and Ghent University, together with companies like Umicore, CRH, Indaver, Nyrstar, MaRes aims at creating and demonstrating an operational, flexible toolbox combining pyro-, hydro-, electro-, bio-, solvo- and ionometallurgy technologies to recover metals and valorise the residual matrix into highly innovative lowcarbon building materials and other mineral materials Combination of: Strategic basic research projects to develop more generic technologies in the toolbox Applied research projects for tailored solutions for specific streams
EIT Raw Materials Zero Waste NoI Innovation in the metallurgical toolbox requires specific infrastructure and expertise in the different blocks of the toolbox Each specific technology platform has an EIT Raw Materials Network of Infrastructure, coordinated by Ghent University, KULeuven, VITO or VTT with its own partners NoI organize themselves voluntarily in a ZeroWaste NoI cluster
ZeroWaste Cluster
Reasons for clustering Joint communication strategy Coherent communication on the toolbox idea towards potential customers Joint governance structure Similar database model Networks organized similarly (partner involvement, contracts, procedures, ) Similar way of offering infrastructure to potential customers
