BACHELOR COLLEGE I M DEVELOPING THE CITY CAR OF THE FUTURE Undergraduate program AUTOMOTIVE* * This major is formally part of the Electrical Engineering Bachelor s program.
Undergraduate program Automotive TU/e Bachelor College Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) clusters its Bachelor s programs in the Bachelor College. As a student of the TU/e Bachelor College you have the scope to shape your study on the basis of your interests and ambitions. The Bachelor s program is largely made up of your major, that field in which you later intend to work as an engineer. It is the foundation of your study program. This folder tells you more about the contents of the Automotive major in relation to the Bachelor s program so that you can find out if Automotive appeals to you. This is Automotive The automotive sector is growing fast and demand for automotive engineers is rising. For good reason. The automotive industry is facing some significant challenges. The modern car is an intelligent system, super high-tech. Electrical components are here to stay with the transition to new powertrains (hybrid and electric) and advances in communication and navigation. In addition to the traditional mechanical engineering, the emphasis lies increasingly on disciplines like electronics and software. The major where you look beyond your borders Our world faces numerous social challenges presented by the everlasting demand for mobility and the impact this has on space and environment. TU/e believes that technology is the answer to resolve the negative aspects. The Automotive major meets the demands of society on the automotive sector. You learn the basics of all the relevant parts of the car, so you can understand the car as a system. Because of this knowledge you contribute to innovations on smarter, cleaner and safer cars. Degree The Automotive major is formally part of the Electrical Engineering Bachelor s program. When you have completed this major, you receive the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree, specializing in Automotive. Typically Automotive in Eindhoven The Automotive major is a unique program in automotive engineering at university level; within the Netherlands it is only available at TU/e. Much of the Dutch automotive industry is concentrated in the Brainport Eindhoven Region where employers are in real need of highly qualified engineers educated for the automotive sector. Since the automotive sector is knowledge-intensive, that means that many employees have a higher education or university background. The Netherlands enjoys a good reputation in the automotive field. Many companies are market leaders in Europe or even globally. TU/e works closely with these national and international companies. A study for you? You have a strong interest in science subjects. You are fascinated by complex high-tech systems and the interplay of motion, electronic components and control. You are always searching for improvement. You are ambitious and become inspired by the thought that your efforts can help to reduce traffic jams or CO2 emissions. Recognize yourself? Then you belong to the new generation of automotive engineers!
IULIAN DOBROVOLSCHI Bachelor s degree student I M DEVELOPING THE CITY CAR OF THE FUTURE The car industry is shifting more and more to electric and autonomous cars. I want to be a part of these transitions. TU/e gave me the opportunity to join several automotive teams, work with new technologies, and contribute to the creation of a unique piece of engineering. I am proud to be part of a student team designing a roadlegal prototype of an electric city car. Smart, clean and safe that s what defines the perfect electric car. Our department has a unique academic approach to make that car a reality. Studying in the technological heart of Europe offers excellent job perspectives. Companies are eager to open their doors for TU/e Automotive engineers. Bachelor s program Major The three-year Bachelor s program comprises the major in large part. It is the foundation of your study and the Automotive subjects are clustered in a number of themes: The digital car The controlled car Actuators and powertrains User centered automobility Although the program focuses on the car of the future, we also discuss the traditional combustion engine in the Design Based Learning project Combustion Engine. A Bachelor s final project is also part of the major. Basic subjects In addition to your major, you follow a number of basic subjects like mathematics and physics, and you learn engineering design. Professional skills like cooperation and organization become part of your character. These subjects give you the solid foundation you need as an engineer. Free electives A quarter of your Bachelor s program comprises elective subjects that enable you to accentuate aspects of your study. You may opt to broaden your knowledge with subjects from another field or penetrate deeper in your own field. The Energy Challenge, Venus Exploration and Wireless Charging assignments are examples of what you could choose for your free electives. Electives - USE Finally, you choose USE subjects. USE stands for User, Society and Enterprise. These subjects show how technology always operates in a broader context. Engineers develop technology for users to contribute to solutions for societal problems and to create business opportunities for industry. The first year in concrete terms The first year of the Bachelor s program is also known as the foundation year. In addition to the basic subjects, other subjects in the first year include systems (mechanical and electrical), automotive trends (knowledge of basic components), dynamics and automobility (mobility issue). Theory is explained in lectures. During exercise sessions, supervised self-study, you exercise with the material. If you opt for a project in your elective choice, you apply the theory to that project. Each academic year consists of 60 credits (ECTS) and each credit is equivalent to 28 hours of study. The first academic year is divided into 2 semesters of four periods of 8 weeks that you complete with 2 weeks of exams. Intensive coaching Experienced TU/e coaches offer you personalized advice from the start to the finish of your study, beginning during your enrollment when you and your coach look at the major that suits you best and the best ways of filling in your electives. In this way you shape your study program in line with the interests and ambitions you have. And should you realize during the first year
TU EINDHOVEN LEARN/EXPLORE/INNOVATE Success is a process. Learn the fundamentals, explore the possibilities, and innovate to solve problems. The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) offers an excellent learning environment that allows you to excel. You will appreciate our personal approach - in the lecture room, on campus and in guidance by professors. We will help you find your way. Together with your own drive and ambition this will be your way to success. that a different major suits you better, then you and your coach look at how you might be able to switch major during the year. In addition to a personal coach, you also get help from a study counselor and senior students who mentor groups of first-year students of which you are a member. During your initial period of study, they can help show you the ropes. On to a master s degree After completing your Bachelor s program, you can either move on to an Automotive Technology Master. Or any one of the many other connecting master s degree programs at a university in the Netherlands or abroad. At TU/e that could be Electrical Engineering, Systems and Control or Sustainable Energy Technology. What next after graduation? After your Master s graduation, you could take up an attractive position in the broad automotive engineering field, at an organization like DAF/Paccar or Scania (truck manufacturers), VDL or APTS (coach makers), DSM or Sabic (raw materials), Inalfa, Eaton, DTI, Tegema and Benteler (mechatronics), Bosch Transmissions, GCI, Vredestein or Philips (components), NXP or TomTom (ICT) and TNO, TTAI or the Automotive Campus (with test facilities) in Helmond. The kind of jobs for you include automotive engineer, project leader, manager, system architect and technology scout. In brief, the industry has so much to offer you! You could, of course, choose to do the two-year designer program in Automotive Systems Design or pursue a PhD at one of the departments involved in the automotive field. Employers on automotive Demand for automotive engineers is rising as the automotive industry quickly expands. Employers are very impressed by the Automotive Bachelor. To quote a few of them: Demand for enthusiastic, well educated engineers will only increase at DAF. That s why we welcome the Automotive Bachelor of TU/e. Ron Borsboom, Board of Management, director for product development, DAF Trucks. Automotive system knowledge is crucial to being able to successfully innovate in automotive ICs. Kees Gehrels, Manager Systems & Applications, BU Automotive, NXP Semiconductors. The Dutch and international automotive industry benefits from well educated people. TNO is enthusiastic about this unique study that is aligned with the work of TNO and the automotive industry in this region. Leo Kusters, Innovation Director at TNO Transport & Mobility. A car is kind of a computer, gaming platform, ipad on wheels in one. Smart enough to solve most problems itself. TomTom is right into this. Will you be? Carlo van de Weijer, Vice-President, Traffic Solutions, TomTom.
TU/e: Your path to success starts here Leading in Engineering, Science & Technology High-quality research and education Excellent modern student facilities Scholarships available International community of more than 70 nationalities Friendly, open culture International network with prominent universities and institutes TU/e alumni in high demand among employers Strong position in Brainport Eindhoven, the Dutch high-tech region BART NIESSEN Alumnus TU/e has good contacts with automotive companies, like DAF, TNO, TomTom, NXP, and BMW. That gives you an awful lot as a student. In 2010 I did my internship at the headquarters of BMW in Munich, Germany. I was also part of the student University Racing Eindhoven, URE, for three years. I learned a lot there, especially when I was team captain. This really put the theory we learned into actual practice. I now work at Audi in the German town of Ingolstadt where I work on the engineering development of tires for future Audi models. Our challenge is to develop a tire that is comfortable, sporty and efficient all at the same time. I m responsible for all types of tire for the new Audi A3. That means coordinating many different tire tests on different test benches and test circuits, from the south of Spain to the north of Finland.
