P1 CAREER: 3D Printing of Millimeter-Thick Highly Conductive Flexible Electrodes for Na-ion Pseudocapacitors The objective of this proposal is to develop an extrusion-based printing method combined with laser manufacturing for millimeter-thick, highly conductive electrodes for Na-ion pseudocapacitors. This project will enrich femtosecond laser-assisted extrusion 3D printing with a broad material selection including electrode material and the full freedom to design and control a structure down to the micro-, even partially to the nano-scale. The main novelties of the PI s approach are twofold: (1) femtosecond laser-induced polymerization and carbonization will let the PI explore millimeter NVP electrodes with printing techniques, significantly simplifying the manufacturing and lowering cost; and (2) model-based 3D printing integrated material design, NVP-polyimide coating, and nano-micro-macro printing controlling will allow the PI to elucidate, and thereby construct, the relationships between structure features and device performance. This is a well-written proposal. This research addresses a pressing need in the United States and globally for printable pseudocapacitors by integrating extrusion printing and femtosecond laser processing. High performance energy storage devices have been identified as crucial components for various emerging applications, such as electrical vehicles, renewable energy and smart grids, and nextgeneration portable and wearable electronics. The project actively engages and mentors K-12 students and their educators, undergraduate and graduate researchers; expose critical members of the projects to academic, education, and outreach objectives; and facilitate these activities translating to benefits for society and economic development. This is a well-written proposal. This research has the potential for direct impact to society. The research may advance the laser-based 3D manufacturing. The proposal addresses an adequate plan to integrate the research and teaching activities.

P2 CAREER: Understanding Directionally Templated Interphase Processing-Structure Development and Relationships in Polymer Nano-Composite Materials The objective of this proposal is to apply the method of carbon-polymer templating on the nanoscale to the broad field of polymer-based nano-composite materials processing in order to solve key issues regarding alignment of flexible molecules by directional templating. By using the nano-carbons to template directional polymer formations in the macro-composite, the proposed effort is aimed at producing materials, which exhibit properties that far exceed the current state-of-the-art for such products existing today. In addition, understanding the role of rigid nano-bodies to template flexible molecules has implications toward architectural control of macromolecules for materials design. This is a well-written proposal. The overarching goal of the work is to use the processing technology to control polymer and biopolymer morphology to produce materials with tailored properties. At present, only very specialized techniques can be used to produce such materials, therefore, manufacturing and material costs remain high, which limits their use. This approach will enable a wider range of systems to be processed for use in these limited applications. This research will have an impact on many industries including, transportation, aviation, health care, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, sporting, as well as construction. The research and educational integration plan linked to this work will also contribute to education the public and students at various levels of the importance of materials processing as well as the process for the development of innovative technology. The PI has a well-organized plan to integrate the research and educational activities. K-12, Graduate, and undergraduate students and public are involved in the outreach activities. This is a well-written proposal. This research has a direct impact to the material science area and has benefits to the nano-composite materials processing industry. The PI also addresses the longterm effect of this research to the society.

P3 CAREER: Landslides and Lidar: Improved Education and Geohazard Interpretation through a Synthesis of Big Data Informatics and Geotechnics The objective of this proposal is to merge novel geotechnical analyses and large, remotelysensed datasets within a Geographical Information System (GIS) framework to advance the fundamental understanding of landslide mechanics and historical characteristics, synthesized within a real-time risk framework that will communicate landslide awareness to the public and engage already tech-savvy future scientists and engineers. This research has potential to be transformative by not only extending three-dimensional slope stability analyses to highresolution topographic data derived from lidar, but also improving geotechnical site characterization by providing thousands of landslides to back-analyze. This is a well-written proposal. The novelty of this research is not clear. The proposed work presents a way of transforming communication between engineers and the public, a challenge stemming from the highly technical nature of the profession, by creating a real-time webmap application that merges open-source weather forecasts with deterministic landslide risk mapping. This research provides the opportunity to bridge that gap through technology that people can access and understand webmaps. The development of lidar-applied, mechanics-based stability analyses holds major promise for improved assessment of geohazard susceptibility. This is compounded with future integration of developing spatial technologies and the increasing availability of lidar and GIS big data sets, enhancing our ability to translate risk to the public. Graduate, undergraduate, and high school students will be involved in the project. The PI will participate various public seminars and lectures as a part of the educational initiatives of the project. This is well-written proposal. The research promotes the fundamental understanding of landslide mechanics and historical characteristics. The PI has a well-organized plan for the integration of educational activities.

P4 CAREER: Observing and Communicating Preferences in Systems Engineering What do YOU want? What do THEY want? How do you want to HEAR it? The objective of this proposal is to advance the understanding of preferences and preference communication in systems engineering to enable further preference-focused research in the future. To address this goal, the primary research objective of the project proposed here is to prove that preferences concerning a system are often inconsistent between stakeholders and that the preferred means of preference communication varies by individual. This is a well-written proposal. The PI could include more preliminary results in this proposal. The project will generate the data set on preferences that will provide a foundation for the understanding of preferences in systems engineering. This data set, and the proving or disproving of the conjectures, will have significance in any field concerned with design, organization, education, or communication. The PI will create games and YouTube videos, and organize seminars (through Lunch and Learn) for students and practitioners, and general public to disseminate the outcomes of this project. The outreach activities are not adequate and could be explained further. This research can help to understand preferences and preference communication in systems engineering. However, the novelty of this work and long-term effects to the society could be mentioned clearly. The outreach activities are not adequate and could be explained more.

P5 CAREER: Exploiting Geometric Nonlinearities and Buckling in the Multi-Hazard Design of Resilient Structures The objective of this proposal is to focus on concepts that may lead to a new paradigm in structural engineering, that is, purposefully nonlinear structural response, and the view of buildings as a meta-structure network of nonlinear springs and dissipators. The research will lay the foundation for research into distributed meta-structures elements. Originality of work. It s difficult to assess the proposal because text and pictures are removed in various places of the proposal. The proposed research explains that the axial-force fuse will find immediate application in floor vibration control in both new construction and in building retrofits. The self-centering beams are a novel modification of traditional beams that may lead to potentially significant improvements in ductility. Finally, the mechanisms used along with the specific implementation will provide a new method for ensuring self-centering and stability of rocking systems. The educational goals are directly integrated with research, and will be one of the primary tasks of the proposed research. They will primarily be pursued through demonstrations, exhibits, and visits to elementary and high schools. The novelty of this research is not clear. Outreach activities are not elaborated. This is a well-written proposal. This research may help on advancing knowledge and understanding in the distributed meta-structures elements for the structural engineering applications. However, the novelty of this work and long-term effects to the society could be mentioned more clearly. The integration of educational activities is limited because of removal of text.

P6 CAREER: From Risk Aversion to Innovation: Transforming the Concept Selection Process to Maximize Product Success The objective of this proposal is to understand the fundamental role between risk, innovation, and concept selection in order to improve the flow of creative ideas through this process. This research can develop an understanding of how decision tools are promoting or filtering the flow of creative ideas in the engineering design process. This is a well-written proposal and the PI has the ability to execute the proposed work successfully. The PI could include some preliminary results related to this project. The proposed research will have broad impacts in industry by enabling companies to develop a sustainable innovation capacity due to the knowledge developed on how creative ideas are filtered and promoted through the concept selection process. This research proposal has a wellbalanced research and teaching activities. Graduate, undergraduate, and K-12 students will be involved in the project. The educational plan of this proposal will directly impact many women in Morocco and the US through the design training program. The research will be included in a newly developed graduate level course and existing undergraduate level courses. This is a well-written proposal. The proposed research addresses the engineering design by developing a theoretical framework for research that investigates the relationship between risk, innovation, and concept selection. The PI could include some preliminary results related to this project. The PI has a well-organized plan for the integration of educational activities.
