Chemical Engineering Chemical engineers design plant equipment and devise processes for manufacturing chemicals, pharmaceuticals, polymers, etc., by applying principles and technology of chemistry, physics, biology and engineering. B.S. Corrosion Engineering Corrosion engineers integrate knowledge of chemistry, chemical engineering and materials science to manage the effects of corrosion on materials, devices and structures. Electrical Engineering Electrical engineers are involved with the design and application of small scale electrical circuits as well as large scale power systems, and everything in between. B.S. Computer Engineering Computer engineers are concerned with both the design of computerbased hardware and software as well as their integration into other devices. Mechanical Engineering Mechanical engineers design, analyze and/or build various aspects of mechanical systems through their understanding of material properties and physics. B.S. Mechanical Polymer Engineering Mechanical polymer engineers merge an understanding of fundamental mechanical engineering principles with a background in polymer engineering to best utilize the unique properties of polymers. B.S. Aerospace Systems Engineering Aerospace systems engineers lead interdisciplinary teams and integrate input from a variety of constituents to identify optimal solutions as they relate to the aerospace industry. 12 Co-Operative Education Program Provides real-world engineering experiences to our undergraduate students Optional, but more than 90% of our eligible students participate 5 th oldest in the US (est. 1914) 50% accept full-time positions with their Coop employers Co-ops in 23 states; private/public companies and government agencies Students typically rotate on/off for three co-op semesters starting with the Spring of their 3 rd year. Several students choose to add an optional co-op term (Summer, after completing their 2 nd year)

14 UA 2010 NCAA Soccer Championship While this is Akron s first National Championship in athletics...engineering has been winning trophies for a while!

15 SAE Student Design Teams SAE Formula Team In these international, highly-competitive events (typically 100 or more entries), Akron Formula SAE Teams have placed in the top 15 in 12 of the last 16 years ( ) This year, the team will compete in Michigan (in June), Austria (in July) and Germany (in August).

19 ASCE Student Design Teams Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge Design Civil Engineering students design, build, test and compete concrete canoes and steel bridges. Both the steel bridge and the concrete canoe teams finished 1 st in the Ohio Valley Conference for the past two years went to Nationals This year s regional competition was at The University of Akron Other groups of students are involved in various activities as part of the Akron Chapter of Engineers Without Borders.

20 AIChE Student Design Team: Chem-E Car Built a chemicallycontrolled electromechanical race car Alkaline fuel-cell power with remote sensing Have won National Championship in the past Placed 1 st in their regional this Spring. On to National Championships in Minneapolis in October!
