2 YOUR NOMINEE(S): ICI Instituto Curitiba de Informática (Curitiba Institute of Informatics) REASONS FOR NOMINATION (please justify why you think your candidate is qualified): The digital inclusion of the population excluded from the universe of Information and Communication Technology-ICT can also be considered as one of the paths to social inclusion. By means of digital inclusion, the less favored population obtains the right of free access to information and can be benefited with features that allow access to information of interest to you, as well as assist in democratization of access to new technologies and enable social inclusion of this layer of the population, and may even improve their living conditions. The Curitiba Institute of Informatics (ICI) became involved in this project for being a company with expertise in developing solutions to government management and maintain with the municipality of Curitiba a contract which has as its object, among other things, establish the basis for the implementation of activities related to scientific and technological development for teaching and research in the areas of computer science, telematics and information technology. The solution provides wireless internet (also free) to the residents of the surroundings of, for now, 80 schools, supporting the educational development and social growth of the population. Considering an average of 2.76 inhabitants per residence ( and the approximate amount of residences within the radius of the signal (13,000), has an estimate of project coverage to approximately 27,600 residents. Currently the numbers point to an average of 2,600 external access daily, being 1,200 unique hits, i.e. from different points. The profile of access has indicated that, at the moment, the use of the free internet is being done with a purpose quite focused on digital inclusion itself, with a predominantly focused access to social media and related applications. It is important to note that this is a living project, and that it will expand to the rest of the schools that have not been included in this first moment (the project already answered almost half of schools). In addition, it should be noted that the city of Curitiba, through ICI, also has other initiatives of providing free wi-fi internet, and may be cited, for example, the connections offered in some parks and other sights of the city.

3 SUPPORTING INFORMATION: Please send any supporting information to the address above, including information from candidate (i.e. excerpt from program description, web site print-out, press release, etc.) Web site: Testimonials: Marcia Peça, 33, Director of the Municipal school Vila Zanon (Tatuquara) The school library is open to the community. Before, 10 to 15 students came daily to do research. After the wi-fi network was installed, it is became very rare. We offer multifunctional monitoring for students with special conditions. The wi-fi is good for mothers, that sometimes spend time at school, waiting for the end of attendances. Now they bring notebook or access the internet by cell phone while waiting for their children. The internet has changed the way of the community sees the school and the way they relate. We received suggestions from the internet, talked with alumni. The internet really narrowed the ties of the community with the school. 30% of our students are poor. Give access to the internet is a very good thing for the kids and especially teenagers. It was a transformation in the lives of everyone. Djanani Gomes de França Villain, 33, baker, resident of Vila Zanon We don't have operators service. We used to go to lan houses. It is a convenience to have access from home. I bought a notebook after wi-fi was installed. My son likes games, my daughter uses for schoolwork. I get recipes and publish photos of my products. Turned out to be a working tool. And I use social networking to stay in touch with friends. I could use internet all day. Djanira Gomes de França, 53, resident of Vila Zanon I didn't even turn on a computer. I've never had contact with the internet. Now, my kids help me when I have some difficulty. I do therapy with a psychologist and psychiatrist (for treating depression). I can say that using the internet takes away my stress. I have contacted people, participate in promotions. It improved my life. Marlene Oneko Dias, mother of Rodrigo (13) and Mariana (3) Wi-fi is great! Before, we had dial-up internet, but rarely were able to connect. Now, the operators offering the service link, when we hire, they say that is not available to our address. That's

4 why the wi-fi network was a very good thing. It was great, especially for my son. He uses for schoolwork and a game that is famous. He plays every day. But as he is an excellent student, and we always accompanies and see that everything is in order, we allow him to continue using. José Roberto Dias, father of Rodrigo (12) and Mariana (3) We installed a better card on the computer to improve access and our son really enjoy it. He also shows for sister videos of Galinha Pintadinha. She watches and loves it. I can't access, but I intend to make a computer course to start using. Janaina Nadjara Rodrigues, secretary of the Municipal school Vila Zanon and resident of the village I won a computer, my 5 years old son loves watching videos. Before, I used to Access internet from school or lan house. The use at home greatly improved my life. My mom lives on the coast, now I can buy tickets over the internet and not face the queue at the bus station. Also use on my phone, I get all day plugged into social networking.
