4 CENTRE FOR ACADEMIC STANDARDS & QUALITY ENHANCEMENT The information in this document is organised into the following sections: Section A Administrative and Regulatory Information Section B Outcomes Section C Structure Section D Teaching, Learning and Assessment Section E Programme Management SECTION A ADMINISTRATIVE AND REGULATORY INFORMATION 1 Overarching Title The Sociology and Criminology Undergraduate Programme (SCUP) 2 Brief Summary The Sociology and Criminology Undergraduate Programme makes available, within the Department of Sociology, single honours degree routes in Sociology and Criminology and offers a joint Honours route in Criminology and Sociology. In addition, these degree routes are available as single honours degree routes in Sociology with Quantitative Methods and Criminology with Quantitative Methods and a joint honours route in Criminology and Sociology with Quantitative methods. Each of these routes provides a thorough grounding in the theoretical traditions and current debates of the relevant disciplines. Each of the degrees contain a number of core subjects and (at Levels 5 and 6) a range of optional units. The core subjects are designed to reflect the knowledge and experiences that are contained in the subject benchmarks and the options permit specialisation in areas of the discipline that individual students find academically interesting or vocationally relevant. The overall coherence to the Programme is provided by a number of common features that operate across all degree routes, notably research methods and employability and personal development. Sociology and Criminology may also be studied with a range of other subjects within the framework of the Combined Honours Scheme. This position reflects the situation approved in connection with the former SCCS Programme s approval via the EQAL process (January 2011 and February 2012) and is based on two considerations Lack of demand from students to study a language currently or when this was available on the Programme prior to the introduction of EQAL Student opinions (including those expressed by past and present students at the Panel meeting with students in connection with the Periodic Review, held on October 2013) which have articulated the desire for more options in their chosen subject(s) of study to be available: the inclusion of Uniwide within the Programme would further erode subject optionality. 10 Compliance with University Assessment Regulations University Assessment Regulations The Programme is subject to the University s Assessment Regulations for Undergraduate Programmes of Study

SECTION B - OUTCOMES 23 MMU Graduate Outcomes On successful completion of their course of study MMU graduates will be able to: GO1. apply skills of critical analysis to real world situations within a defined range of contexts; GO2. demonstrate a high degree of professionalism characterised by initiative, creativity, motivation and self-management; GO3. express ideas effectively and communicate information appropriately and accurately using a range of media including ICT; GO4. develop working relationships using teamwork and leadership skills, recognising and respecting different perspectives; GO5. manage their professional development reflecting on progress and taking appropriate action; GO6. find, evaluate, synthesise and use information from a variety of sources; GO7. articulate an awareness of the social and community contexts within their disciplinary field. Foundation Year Outcomes It is recognised that the University s General Educational Outcomes will be met in full on completion of the total student experience over the period of study towards a degree. On successful completion of the University Foundation Year a student will be able to: FY1. Demonstrate an awareness of the programme of study in a wider context. 24 Programme Rationale The Sociology and Criminology Undergraduate Programme developed from the former Sociology, Criminology and Cultural Studies Programme. Recruitment onto the BA (Hons) degree route in Media, Culture and Society ceased in 2011/12 and the final cohort of students on that degree graduated in June The new Sociology and Criminology Undergraduate Programme incorporates single Honours degree routes in Sociology and Criminology and a joint Honours degree in these two subjects. The new BSc with Quantitative Methods degree routes will have their first graduating cohorts in These new routes are a key element of the MMU Q-Step Centre s programme for enhancing students quantitative skills and their post-graduation career trajectories. The with Quantitative Methods award will signal to students a potential route of skills specialisation which may enhance their post-graduation employability, and will signal to employers that skills specialisation of the graduate. Quantitative skills and QM-skilled graduates are in high demand within the UK job market. The increasing importance of data analysis in decision-making has boosted demand for employees with analytical skill sets, popularising career paths that lead to big data jobs. The Sociology department at the MMU is one of the largest suppliers of graduates in the UK. It is, therefore, strategically important for us to be aware of such demand on QM skills in job market. The BSc award is designed to allow students to acquire the QM skills required in the job market. Sociology and Criminology seek to provide students with an understanding of the world that is based upon the interaction between individuals, groups and social institutions. The topics that are taught include the key practical issues and academic theories that have affected the development of both disciplines and the inter-relationships between them. Students address a range of sociological and criminological questions using theory and research methods governed by the application of ethical standards of academic conduct. Both subjects also analyse how the enhanced globalization of the contemporary world has brought about changes to the operations of society, in particular to the relationship between national governments and their citizens.

11 All six degree courses within the Sociology and Criminology Undergraduate Programme incorporate a wide range of transferable skills that are designed to enhance the students vocational prospects following graduation and some units also offer placement opportunities. Personal Development Planning is delivered by the personal tutor system and forms a key aspect of the student experience, which is also linked to future employment. All six degree courses include the study of contemporary issues that add to their academic profile. These include gang culture and globalization. All six degree courses further incorporate the study of contemporary issues and problems that have practical relevance to work. These include diversity issues affecting race, gender and class and research methodology with a particular emphasis on quantitative methodologies. The Department of Sociology has an excellent track record of research and academic scholarship that informs teaching which is further enhanced by the practical experience and networks of many members of the teaching staff. 25 QAA Benchmark Statement(s) The degree courses within the SCUP (and Sociology and Criminology subjects taught within the Combined Honours Programme) are covered by two sets of benchmarks contained in Subject Benchmark Statement Criminology (2014) Subject Benchmark Statement Sociology (2007) These are published by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education 26 Programme Specific Outcomes The Programme Specific Outcomes that are listed below are based on a compositing of a number of documents that include the MMU graduate outcomes and relevant subject benchmarks.
