ENGINEERING INSTITUTE AT SAM HOUSTON HIGH SCHOOL FOR INCOMING FRESHMEN ENGINEERING COMPUTER SCIENCE
Sam Houston High School received approximately $17 MILLION IN UPGRADES under Bond 2010, among them the addition of a Career and Technical Education building that opened in spring 2015 with state-of-the art classrooms and learning laboratories, including for the engineering design and manufacturing programs.
ENGINEERING INSTITUTE ENGINEERING COMPUTER SCIENCE IMAGINE BEING AT THE CENTER OF INNOVATION, MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE. Engineers provide solutions to problems and devise ideas for innovations touching almost every aspect of life. Crossing multiple industries, they design and maintain everything from computers and airplanes to buildings and robots. Imagine the possibilities. These opportunities await you through the world of engineering. The Engineering Career Institute at Sam Houston High School offers incoming freshmen an advanced and rigorous curriculum in all core subjects, with a focus on career opportunities in one of two different strands, or majors, to choose from: Engineering Design and Computer Science. Each leads to a STEM endorsement, which is one of five targeted areas of interest set by the state. All majors offer students a number of Advanced Placement and dual-credit courses. Career courses closely align to the related programs at St. Philip s College. Advanced Placement courses are available to prepare students for rigorous college coursework offered through the dual-credit courses. All Institute students are required to participate in UIL, student leadership and service projects while in high school.
CORE COURSES EARN UP TO 45 HOURS OF COLLEGE CREDIT* All students in the Engineering Institute take the courses below, regardless of which strand they pursue.** PERIOD 9 TH 10 TH 11 TH 12 TH FOUR-YEAR PLAN 1 English I or Pre-AP English I English II or Pre-AP English II AP English III or ENGL 1301/1302 DC AP English IV or ENGL 2322/2323 DC 2 Algebra I or Pre-AP Geometry Geometry or Pre-AP Algebra II Algebra II or Pre-AP Pre-Calculus or DE Pre-Calculus or AP Calculus AB/BC 3 Biology or Pre-AP Biology Chemistry or Pre-AP Chemistry AP Physics or PHYS 2425 DC Course varies by major 4 AVID or World History or Pre-AP World History U.S. History or AP U.S. History AP Govt / AP Eco or GOVT 2305 DC/ ECON 1301 DC 5 Spanish I or Spanish II Spanish II or Spanish III 6 Courses vary by major 7 PE/PE Sub./ 8 Fine Arts TOTAL CREDITS DC = Dual Credit (both high school and college credit) DE = Dual Enrollment at UT AP = Advanced Placement Pre-AP = Pre-Advanced Placement * College credits include both dual credit and AP classes. 6 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS ADVANCED BIOTECHNOLOGY Students learn to use sophisticated laboratory equipment, perform statistical analysis and practice quality-control techniques in applying advanced knowledge and skills to the emerging fields of agricultural, medical, regulatory and forensic biotechnology. ADVANCED ENGINEERING DESIGN & PRESENTATION (DC) Students master computer software applications in a variety of engineering and technical fields, while further developing the process of engineering thought and application of the design process. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (PLTW) Students develop artificially intelligent systems that create solutions to real problems found in science and industry. Students will analyze problems for computational difficulty and analyze solutions for computational efficiency. BIOTECHNOLOGY Students study agricultural, environmental, economic and political roles of bioenergy and biological remediation; the roles of nanoscience and nanotechnology in biotechnology medical research and future trends in biological science and biotechnology. COMPUTATIONAL PROBLEM-SOLVING (PLTW) As a capstone course, CPS offers students the opportunity to work in a team to deliver a software solution to a real-world design problem. Teams start by defining problems, which might originate from CPS students, community, industry clients, or students in other problem-based courses, and use the Agile design process to develop a software solution. COMPUTER SCIENCE APPLICATIONS (PLTW) Students produce programs that integrate mobile devices and leverage devices for distributed collection and data processing. Students analyze, adapt and improve each other s programs while working primarily in JAVA and other industrystandard tools. This course prepares students for College Board s Advanced Placement CS-A test. COMPUTER SCIENCE & SOFTWARE ENGINEERING (PLTW) This course develops computational thinking, generates excitement about career paths that utilize computing and introduces professional tools that foster creativity and collaboration. Course can serve as a student s first course in computer science. Students develop programming expertise and explore the workings of the Internet. Projects and problems include app development, visualization of data, cybersecurity, robotics, and simulation. CONCEPTS OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY Provides an overview of science, technology, engineering and mathematics and their interrelationships. Students work on design teams to develop a product or system and use multiple software applications to prepare and present course assignments. CYBERSECURITY (PLTW) Introduces the tools and concepts of cybersecurity and encourages students to create solutions that allow people to share computing resources while protecting privacy. This course raises students knowledge of and commitment to ethical computing behavior. DIGITAL & INTERACTIVE MEDIA Students analyze and assess current and emerging technologies while designing and creating multimedia projects that address customer needs and resolve problems. ENGINEERING DESIGN & PRESENTATION Students study the process of design as it applies to engineering fields using multiple software applications and tools necessary to produce and present working drawings, solid model renderings and prototypes. ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS Students solve and model robotic design problems. Students use a variety of mathematical methods and models to represent and analyze problems involving data acquisition, spatial applications, electrical measurement, manufacturing processes, materials engineering, mechanical drives, pneumatics, process control systems, quality control, and robotics with computer programming.
FORENSIC SCIENCE Provides students with a basic understanding of investigative theory, collection and preservation of evidence and sources of information. Methods of conducting interviews and interrogations are covered. Students must pass safety test with 100% mastery. INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER SCIENCE (PLTW) Students will learn the impact of computing in society and the application of computing across career paths. Students create interactive stories; work in teams to create simple apps for mobile devices using App Inventor; and analyze data about students health, social habits, and interests using functions in Excel. MODERN PHYSICS Students will gain an understanding of how science works; what motivates it, how initially promising ideas are refuted by continuing research, and the consequences of science on other fields and society in general. ROBOTICS & AUTOMATION Students demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary for the robotics and automation industry. Students build prototypes or use simulation software to test their designs. Students must pass the safety test with 100% mastery. SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH & DESIGN Students study the principles of environmental engineering. Topics include material balances, environmental chemistry, risk assessment, air quality, water quality and waste water treatment. Quantitative evaluation of environmental, technical and economic problems with control of pollutants in air, water and land will also be discussed.
