Project Review: P1 (2) The investigator proposed a model-based control method utilizing techniques from continuousprocessing industries for the optimization of discrete-parts machining processes with multiple target objectives, such as profit, quality, and time. They also have a plan to demonstrate the developed methods that can be scaled to effectively control systems of machining operations. As proposed this work will have a significant impact in the discrete-parts manufacturing sector by explicitly representing process physics within the control of machining processes. Furthermore, it is proposed to extend this idea of model-based manufacturing control to manufacturing systems by communicating individual process information and product quality measurements throughout the manufacturing network. Note: the proposal extends the 15 page limit. Intellectual merit: Model-based control is nothing new to the industry however the use of this for multiple target objectives considering discrete-parts machining may have some level of novelty. The proposal provides a breakdown of activities towards the implementation. However, there is little doubt whether this can be implemented within the given timeframe of the project. There is not much reference to the existing research activities in this area. It is not clear to this reviewer how the plan will be translated into action and sounds little ambitious in terms of scope of the proposed work. The investigator is qualified for this project and has previous activities in this area. Broader impacts: It is not clear what would be the broader impact at this project in terms of social and scientific aspects. However, the proposed activity involving middle school STEM students within the state, including underrepresented groups. A layered mentoring program will also be established, whereby sponsored students will mentor teams of undergraduates to prepare demonstrations of the concepts. There is a plan to meet with partners and machine tool manufacturer to convey the research results. Considering the nature of the project it is difficult to assess the level of interest among the machine tool manufacturer. Also the dissemination activities also need to be more specific such as mentioning the name of organizations and journals, and conference. Page 1 of 6
Project Review: P2 (5) The project proposes a simulation of machining at atomic level via molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of nanometric cutting at conventional cutting speeds. The process will be used for machining of semiconductor materials, such as silicon, germanium, and iron to investigate the chemical nature of wear. At the same time the investigator will use parallel processing in a distributed computing environment to significantly reduce the computational time per run so that large size work pieces can be considered. Intellectual merit: This is a novel idea and its implementation can have significant impact on future of this research area. However, the proposal summary does not explicitly mention the intellectual merit and broader impact and that is a major drawback. There is no clear plan of action to implement the project activities. The investigator has some level of experience in this area and is qualified to undertake this responsibility. Broader Impact: Within the proposal there is a potential to integrate educational activities. However, the investigator(s) failed to articulate effectively the broader impact of this project. At the end of the proposal there is a mention of education and human resources development without any active plan. Also there is no dissimilation plan within the proposal while providing a very little discussion about the economic impact. The investigator(s) could have utilized the remaining part of 15 th page to address these issues. Page 2 of 6
Project Review: P3 (1) The proposed project will develop and implement a joint market and supply chain decisionmaking system for product planning within a competitive environment. As a starting point they will develop an analytical model that closely resemble real-world problems and provide engineering solution to real problems. Intellectual merit: There are a number of existing approaches in addressing this issue of supply chain management. This proposal put forward a variation of the existing ones with few new components that make it attractive. As described within the proposal the overall implementation plan appears to be effective and seems to produce the intended outcome of the project. The problem is divided into reasonable/manageable size of components and a plan has been presented how to address each of the components. Broader impacts: The supply chain management is a wider field and an effective supply chain decision-making system for dynamic product planning can have a major effect on economic institutions that influence our economic wellbeing. The investigators provided a plan for integrating the outcome within the educational process through undergraduate and graduate studies. It also articulates the involvement of high school students with a focus to Native American students. All these activities can be effective in developing human and institutional infrastructure. One thing is lacking is a wider dissemination plan. Apart from the proposed educational activities, there is no mention of wider dissemination of the research activities as well as the research outcomes. Page 3 of 6
Project Review: P4 (5) The proposed project will provide a method of addressing the portfolio management problem in finance for the investment in energy sector. Intellectual merit: The approach presents a highly mathematical solution of the problem with very little attention on real world issues, which are usually difficult to quantify and incorporate within a mathematical framework. With this view, this reviewer felt that the project may be a good exercise but there is very little chance for this project to provide any meaningful outcome that can be used for real life applications. There is not much information about the investigator(s) background or standing on this issue and is difficult to make any comment. Broader impacts: Considering the above there is very little that the proposed project can influence in terms of social, economic, and scientific arena. The investigator provided the use of graduate students towards the project, however this does not indicate to produce any sustained effort on developing any human and institutional infrastructure for science and technology. In addition, there is no mention of any effective dissemination plan. Page 4 of 6
Project Review: P5 (3) The project will study the effect of heating of a work piece to improve the machinability and subsequent microstructure of machined work material for brittle and cast metals. The work will be supported by finite element modeling of metals and to observe their structure while machining in heated condition. The length of the proposal is beyond the 15 page limit set by the GPC. Unless the investigators obtained prior permission from the Program Director. Intellectual merit: This approach has tried by some other researchers in the past. However, this work proposed to characterize material properties at varying temperatures, which will then be applied to improve machinability. Also in-process monitoring and prediction of temperature is a useful feature. The proposed activities within the proposal seem to be effective and could bring a useful outcome. In terms of investigators background there is no sound evidence that they are capable of undertake the proposed activities. Broader impacts: The proposed research, if successful, can have substantial effect in manufacturing and associated areas and can brought some economic benefit for our industries. As described, there are a number of educational activities and intension to attract minority and underrepresented groups during the project implementation. A number of educational institutions will collaborate during the period of the project; most of them are community colleges. One important thing missing here is wider dissemination. In addition, there is no mention of any effective dissemination plan. Most of the dissemination activities are locally organized. Page 5 of 6
Project Review: P6 (4) The CAREER project will study the heterogeneities at the microstructural length scale and how this can be used to alter macroscopic mechanical behavior of materials in a controlled manner. This will be implemented through quantification of the effect of the evolution of materials microstructure and defect distribution using a finite element based multi-resolution network. Intellectual merit: The project appears to be a novel approach and the outcome of this project can be used to design low cost and efficient materials with tailorable properties. The proposal appears to be a complete plan to achieve the identified objectives and the reviewer thinks the plan can be implemented successfully. There is not enough information to judge the investigators qualification to pursue this project. Broader impacts: The project could have a significant scientific impact that can be transformed to benefit industries and make produce economic impact. The project also has an educational and outreach plan with realistic activities. The investigator also has a plan to develop undergraduate research activities along with a course development on Mechanics using virtual reality games. There is a plan for outreach activities involving high school students along with an intention to attract women and minorities. Page 6 of 6
