4 Lessons learned Cons Administrative overhead Additional complexity to the proposers (2 domain descriptions in the first call) Limited funding, high interest problem with oversubscription Ownership of tasks Complexity of internal decision making - no joint funding pot 7 Overall balance nevertheless clearly positive! For the next call(s): Call domain needs more focus and identical wording in all WPs A single budget Continuing in research of best-practices, more harmonisation and simplification of processes, procedures and decisions 8 4

5 Conclusions The rationale for the Joint Call is manifold: an opportunity to create synergies within FP6 a need to collaborate in international contexts (IMS projects) New focus areas of converging technologies: nano-electronics & nano-photonics bio-sensors & smart/hybrid materials Manufacturing area: need to put emphasis on International relevant projects (mainly STREPs/SSAs) need to gain synergies between IST and NMP competences in manufacturing 9 2nd Joint Call between the IST and the NMP Priorities A working group of the NMP Programme Committee met on 11 February to clarify principles. The NMP Committee met on 4th and 30th March to discuss the principles of joint calls as well as the contents of the 2004 call. The IST Programme Committee also discussed this. 10 5

6 Joint call for proposals under FP6... the next call opens normally, end of May, with a closing date on October Reminder of Thematic Priority 3 Overall approach and objectives Transformation of EU industry with a view to sustainable development From resource-based to knowledge-based Promote real breakthroughs rather than incremental research Integrated approaches Not only research: integration of education and skills development 12 6

7 Thematic Priority 3 concentrates on: i) Nanotechnology, as a flagship of the next industrial revolution ii) Multi-functional knowledge-based materials, as critical drivers of innovation iii)new Production processes and devices, as the key to sustainable development 13 Joint call for proposals under FP6... the next call opens background: the first NMP call very large participation need for focusing and concentration, and selective use of instruments In the 1st call for proposals, NMP had the highest number of participations (almost 22,000) under FP6 in 2003 over all Thematic Priorites: 20% of the entire participation! 14 7

14 NSF-EC Cooperative Activity in Computational Materials Research Following an NSF-EC workshop, April 2004, San Francisco Areas covered include: crystal growth, suface absorption, structural defects, microstructural evolution, crack formation and propagation, spintronics, molecular & nano-eclectronics, quantum dots European research teams to send proposals to EC and US research teams to NSF 27 Recommendations for your future proposals Choose the right instrument Check if your objective is open in the call For the IPs, ensure critical mass, involve SMEs if possible, try to combine financial resources, include supporting modules for RTD actions, e.g. training, TT, spin-offs, IPR, ethics, etc. Develop an ambitious plan of activities Ensure pragmatic management (e.g. board of management, permanent secretariat) Remind possible international cooperation 28 14
