2 1. Approval Reference number G 2014/274 The Board of the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University of Gothen- burg approved the Master of Fine Arts Programme in Fine Arts at its Valand Academy on 20 November On 20 November 2007 the Board approved the curriculum for the Master of Fine Arts Pro- gramme in Fine Arts, 120 Higher Education Credits. A revision to the curriculum was made on 19 March This version, with reference number G2014/274, will apply from 1 Sep- tember Responsible department: Valand Academy 2. Prerequisites Admission to the Master of Fine Arts Programme in Fine Arts requires a bachelor s degree in fine arts or other bachelor s degree, including well- documented, independent artistic work. Applicants will be selected based on an assessment of their expressive ability and under- standing of the historical, cultural, political and economic roles within art. 3. Programme s purpose The main purpose of the programme is to help students deepen and develop their inde- pendent artistic efforts and to acquire skills in addressing the conditions under which their artistry can influence, contribute to, criticise and challenge their contemporary world, in- cluding its different contexts and sites for the production, exhibition and circulation of art. The purpose is to help students achieve a very good knowledge of the art world s various and expanding fields, within which they work and develop their artistry. The Programme also prepares students for research work, which places significant de- mands on their theoretical awareness and ability to reflect critically in both oral and writ- ten form. To facilitate this, the programme is designed as a series of benchmarks related to the students ability to present, reflect on, criticise, contextualise and co- operate at an ad- vanced level concerning their artistic work. 2
3 4. Degree Students who complete the programme with a passing grade and who meet other formal requirements can apply for a degree certificate for a Degree of Master of Arts (Two Years) in Fine Arts, 120 HE credits (Konstnärlig masterexamen i fri konst, 120 hp). The main field of study for the programme is fine arts. 5. Skills and abilities National objectives demonstrate the ability to independently and creatively formulate new questions and contribute to knowledge development, solve advanced problems, develop new and personal forms of expression and critically reflect on their own and others ar- tistic approaches within the programme s main field of study; demonstrate the ability to create and realise their own artistic ideas with a well- developed form of personal expression; independently identify, formulate and solve 3
4 artistic and expressive problems and; plan for and, using suitable methods, com- plete advanced artistic assignments within set time frames; in both national and international contexts and orally and in writing, demonstrate the ability to provide a clear account of and discuss their work and artistic issues in a dialogue with different groups, and; demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to work autonomously in a profes- sional capacity. Programme s main content and design The Master s Programme s two years of full- time study at the Master s level are divided into four courses, one each term. The programme is characterised by the students ability to develop, define, describe and critically reflect on artistic practice, both in theory and through practical work. The first year focuses on the student s development of their approach to artistic production and their own work s contextualisation within contemporary art and related discourses, at the same time as conscious effort is made to articulate the artistic practice. This takes place via a series of interconnected subcourses, including Development and Art Production, Art and Cultural Theory and Exhibition Production, all with an emphasis on methodological questions. During Term 2 there will be an opportunity for international exchange, through which students art will be exhibited for other cultures and on different terms as relates both to the art s production and reception. The programme s second year maintains a focus on art production and involves acquiring deeper knowledge through courses that aim to develop students ability to reflect on and contextualise through their completion of a master essay. Student work is accompanied by seminars and individual supervision. This year of the programme also includes exhibition production, where subcourses in professional development support students in developing their examination exhibition in the lead- up to meeting the public in the public setting. The programme places great emphasis on encouraging students to become skilled commu- nicators, advocates of contemporary art and critical thinkers as well as actors and repre- sentatives for artistic practice. The programme provides students with significant opportu- nities to acquire skills in how to present, write about, discuss and publicly display their work. This lays a foundation that will help them to meet the contemporary world s re- quirements for sustainable artistic practice. 5
6 The programme s studies are divided into the following compulsory courses: Year 1 VMAST1 Individual Practice 1, 30 HE credits VMAST2 Individual Practice 2, 30 HE credits Year 2 VMASH3 Degree Project 1, 30 HE credits VMASEX Degree Project 2, 30 HE credits The courses VMASH3 Degree Project 1 and VMASEX Degree Project 2 encompass the inde- pendent work. 7. Other The language of instruction for the programme is English and, when appropriate, Swedish. Students are required to cover the costs associated with completing artistic works. 6
