Working with industry Located in Darwin at the heart of Northern Australia s emerging natural resources industry, Charles Darwin University s North Australian Centre for Oil and Gas (NACOG) is ideally equipped and situated to offer a complete service to the energy sector. NACOG is CDU s response to the growing education, training and research demands of energy operations underway and in development across Northern Australia and regionally. Darwin sits adjacent to major onshore and offshore gas, oil and condensate reserves. It is already a substantial gas processing, supply and service hub for projects off the coasts of Northern and North-Western Australia. The scale and anticipated longevity of new developments as well as the distance from research, education and training facilities in southern capitals reinforces the need for access to training and research infrastructure in Darwin to support the resources industry. NACOG delivers on this agenda. With Federal Government support, and with generous contributions from INPEX and CDU, it forms part of a $7M energy precinct at CDU s Casuarina campus. NACOG is a strategic response to the resource needs of the energy sector. Our location and local capabilities afford us a unique knowledge and understanding of Territory conditions and their potential impact on resources. ADVANCED MANUFACTURING ALLIANCE

3 Infrastructure and expertise NACOG s state-of-the-art facilities deliver the capability to undertake world-class strategic research services to support the expanding energy industry in Northern Australia. Its staff includes leading local experts and specialised researchers with strong industry experience. NACOG provides tactical research support for specific operational or maintenance issues such as hydrate formation in pipelines and corrosion. NACOG s training and laboratory facilities allow students, researchers and industry to observe and test processes, technologies and solutions in a simulated environment. NACOG & ERGT Our partnership with ERGT Australia has enabled the provision and effective delivery of a range of high risk training solutions, creating a hub of training opportunities for many aspects of the industry. ERGT provides a suite of training options from the Darwin facility including; > > Offshore and maritime survival > > Applied safety skills > > Incident and emergency response > > Safety leadership > > Incident management Accredited fire training ground The fire training facility operates alongside CDU s existing civil and safety training facilities, which ERGT will manage for energy-focussed safety and rescue programs. Together, these will improve the availability, range, quality and commercial value of programs available to industry. Current research projects With a focus on research into corrosion prevention and control in tropical environments, NACOG offers a range of corrosion assessment and testing services to the energy industry, as well as research and consultancy services in multiphase flow and phase behaviour. Current research projects cover four key areas: Corrosion > > Understanding and reducing microbially influenced corrosion in alloys > > Corrosion modelling for structures subjected to differential aeration Maintenance engineering > > Real-time prediction of failures > > Availability and plant performance via prognostics health management (PHM) > > Maintenance optimisation and through-life cost estimation Process data analytics > > Data driven process analysis and optimisation > > Data/model fusion for combining disparate process measurements to provide real-time information necessary for process fault detection and control > > Optical sensors for real-time measurements of emulsions, suspensions and sludge Metal 3D printing > > Application and part-production scoping for the energy sector > > Materials research to investigate the properties of the metal printed and to expand the range of materials to be used in the printer > > Printing of legacy parts and just-in-time spares

4 Real metal, real fast CDU has partnered with SPEE3D; inventors of a world-first 3D metal printer that creates parts at high speed and at low cost. The 3D printing technology can bring industrial-scale manufacturing in a small, portable device, so we can solve big industrial problems in remote areas. The technology is now available for industry collaboration through CDU s Advanced Manufacturing Alliance (AMA); a new industrial transformation research hub for advanced manufacturing in the Northern Territory. In partnership with AMA, CDU has been awarded $4.5M in research grants to enhance the university s application and development of the technology. This includes a project with INPEX specifically targeting application development using the LightSPEE3D printer for the energy sector.

5 Building capacity Built on strong relationships with industry, NACOG offers training through apprenticeships, up-skilling and remote course delivery. Our course content encompasses trades relevant to the petroleum and mining sectors, including process plant operations, instrumentation, electrotechnology, electrical, construction, metal trades, transport and logistics. The CDU Marlins Approved Test Centre offers internationally recognised tests, enabling the energy industry to provide English language training to their employees within the context of the sector. Offering specialisations in process and chemical engineering, CDU offers internationally accredited degrees that provide the necessary academic and practical training for employment in the energy industry. Distance learning programs leading to Diploma and Associate Degree in Engineering, and internationally accredited Bachelor and Master of Engineering degrees in Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.
