WORKING AT THE DEPARTMENT OF DESIGN ENGINEERING THE ATMOSPHERE AT THE DEPARTMENT AND THE FACULTY IN GENERAL IS INFORMAL, PRAGMATIC AND CREATIVE. DESIGN ENGINEERING (DE) IS A COMMUNITY OF ACADEMICS AND STUDENTS WITH A ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES MENTALITY, MAKING IT A VIBRANT AND REWARDING ENVIRONMENT TO WORK IN. When you work at DE, you take part in a team of chairs at the centre of this rapidly evolving discipline. Together you will keep the scientific coverage up to date, which means all chairs have to contribute to the three core research and education areas of DE: Sustainability, Intelligence and Fabrication. INTERDISCIPLINARY AND PRACTICAL You will participate in a community of academics with a strong interest in design, product and systems design and design research, who are used to working in multidisciplinary teams. Research is integrated into the department and the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering (IDE), and activities will be deployed within the Sustainability, Intelligence and Fabrication clusters. EMBEDDED IN THE VALUE CHAIN Because the connection between research and its application in society is so ingrained in TU Delft, we expect you to share this appreciation of valorisation. You are able to promote your work within the industry, build both academic and industrial networks and collaborate with them. This means that your responsibilities include industrial contracts, project acquisitions, patent applications and the stimulation of spin-off companies. INSPIRING AS AN EDUCATOR Our aim is to prepare our BSc, MSc and PhD level students for their future careers in the best way possible. This means that you have an important role to play as an inspiring educator, as a teacher as well as a developer of new and socially relevant courses that are linked to the various research areas at DE and technological developments. Research at DE fits one of the core themes Sustainability, Intelligence and Fabrication, but may also integrate two or all of these clusters.

LEADING AS A MANAGER As a chair, you are responsible for the management of your research group, and for coaching its members towards excellent performance and career development. This includes the supervision of MSc and PhD candidates and the acquisition of funding to employ them. We also expect that our chairs take up important organisational and leadership roles at the departmental and the faculty level. AREAS OF INTEREST AT THE DEPARTMENT OF DESIGN ENGINEERING Interdisciplinary research towards application At DE we have a vision of the future which guides our efforts in research. This vision is informed by trends in industrial design, such as: The rise of products and services that are sustainable by design and that support a circular life style. An increasing percentage of products and services that show reactive and adaptive behaviours because they are built around machine intelligence. The further development of agile fabrication technologies like 3D printing and the adoption of additive and robotic fabrication for the manufacturing of personalised products. These trends will have a driving impact on the development of materials, processes, artificial intelligence algorithms, sensors and actuators. At the same time we expect a growing focus on the application of responsive technologies in the development of new products and services. Our research aims to contribute to these trends while integrating sustainability into it at every step. The long-term ambition of the department is to set up design strategies, methods and tools as well as virtual and digital prototyping facilities that allow intelligent creative design solutions to be moved seamlessly from imagination to manufacturing. Finally, one of the focal points of the faculty of IDE is the successful application of research results into real products. This means that collaborations are common within the university, as well as with companies, universities and institutions inside and outside of the Netherlands. EDUCATION TO MATCH THE RESEARCH We strive to create a fit between areas of interest in research and educational efforts, so our courses and MSc programmes reflect our understanding of the trends mentioned above. At the BSc and MSc level, the three departments of IDE jointly drive the courses and overall content of the programme Industrial Design Engineering. The department is further involved in the Hours Program and a takes care of a substantial amount of graduation projects. Given the rapid scientific developments in these fields, the courses are updated regularly.

A PART OF THE FACULTY OF INDUSTRIAL DESIGN ENGINEERING & DELFT UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY AT THE FACULTY OF INDUSTRIAL DESIGN ENGINEERING (IDE), WE INTEGRATE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT PEOPLE, BUSINESS AND TECHNOLOGY IN ORDER TO DESIGN PRODUCTS FOR OUR RAPIDLY CHANGING SOCIETY. THREE DEPARTMENTS IN THE FACULTY Design Engineering is one of three departments within IDE. The other two are: Product Innovation Management, with a focus on the business aspects of new products and service developments. Industrial Design, with a focus on the interaction between user and product/service/ system through expressiveness, experience, usability and aesthetics. THREE RESEARCH THEMES FOR OUR SOCIETY At the faculty level, research teams from all three departments work on major societal themes, especially three application domains for which there is national and European interest: Care for our Health: caring for a rapidly aging population and dealing with rising costs of healthcare. Let s RE(d)USE: designing products and services that fit seamlessly into a circular economy, reducing energy consumption and achieving energy-efficient use. People in Transit: how to provide people in transit with a seamless experience across all multimodal interlocking systems fit for different types of travellers. THREE QUESTIONS EVERY STUDENT LEARNS TO ANSWER Approaching its 50th birthday in 2019, IDE is the proud alma mater of 6,500 alumni and 2,000 current students. During their education they have the unique opportunity to become comfortable with the three elements that make any design work: People: is it desirable? Technology: is it feasible? Business: is it viable? IDE students therefore become the all-rounders that industrial designers need to be. They develop the skill to switch between high-level systemic thinking and detailed local thinking, as well as the ability to take a product or service from a conceptual to a realistic level. This allows them to create designs and solutions for the human side of our technological society.

LIVING AND WORKING IN DELFT, THE NETHERLANDS THE NETHERLANDS IS FAMOUS FOR ITS WINDMILLS, TULIPS, CLOGS AND CANALS, BUT THAT S NOT ALL THE COUNTRY HAS TO OFFER. IT IS ALSO THE BIRTHPLACE OF NOBEL PRIZE WINNERS LIKE HEIKE KAMERLINGH ONNES, DARING PHILOSOPHERS LIKE BARUCH SPINOZA, AND GROUND-BREAKING ARTISTS LIKE M.C. ESCHER. Delft is world-famous for its Delft Blue earthenware and Johannes Vermeer, master of light and painter of Girl with a Pearl Earring. The city also has historic ties with the Royal House. As you wander along its canals, churches and courtyards, or visit one of its museums and markets, you will relive the city s glorious past. When you re in the mood for a bite or a drink, you have many pubs and restaurants to choose from. PRACTICAL INFORMATION If you are from outside the Netherlands, you may well have many practical questions that go beyond this short introduction. Not to worry: TU Delft provides support services to help you work and live in the Netherlands. Start on our website: TUDELFT.NL/COMINGTOTUDELFT DUTCH SOCIETY The Netherlands ranks as the sixth happiest nation on earth (UN World Happiness Report 2018), and for good reason: the benefits of living and working in the Netherlands include a satisfying worklife balance, a high standard of living, excellent education and health systems, and a vibrant sense of community. The Dutch society is multicultural and focused on international relations, thanks to the country s long history of trade, exploration and welcoming immigrants. And, as a founding member of the EU and NATO, and host to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, the Netherlands remains at the heart of international cooperation even today. THE CITY OF DELFT Delft is a compact, historic city nestled between Rotterdam and The Hague in the province of South Holland. It s part of the Randstad, the metropolitan area in the west of the Netherlands. Even in that highly developed region, Delft stands out as a high-tech city thanks to the abundance of technology-based institutions and organisations often involved with TU Delft. Built on reclaimed marshland, a polder, Delft also borders the agricultural centre of the Randstad, making it wellconnected to culture and nature. SOME FACTS ABOUT THE NETHERLANDS The Netherlands is a small country with a surface area of 41,540 km2, 17% of which is land reclaimed from the sea, rivers, lakes and swamps - Amsterdam Airport used to be a harbour. The Netherlands is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, with over 17 million citizens (around 25% of them live below sea level). The Netherlands is a constitutional monarchy. This means that power is shared by the king, the ministers and parliament. The country is divided into 12 provinces, each with their own representatives and governors. Holland is used to describe two provinces in the west, not all of the Netherlands. The official language is Dutch, but it is the best country in the world for English as a second language. The Netherlands is ranked as the most competitive economy in the EU. The country boasts very effective infrastructure and excellent public transport. The currency is the euro ( ).

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT The vacancies are tenured positions with a probationary period of two months. TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible workweek, day-care and the option of assembling a customised compensation and benefits package (the IKA ). Salary and benefits are set in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. Education at TU Delft should be inspiring and excellent. We therefore set specific standards for the English competency of the teaching staff, and offer training to improve English competency. If you have less than five years of experience and have not yet obtained your teaching certificate, we allow you up to three years to complete it. International tax exemption Certain categories of international staff can receive a tax exemption on approximately 30 percent of their gross salary. This compensates for the extra costs they incur living abroad, such as the need for temporary accommodation. In principle, the 30 percent rule applies to staff who have been expressly recruited from another country and who have a formal contract of employment in the Netherlands. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT BOTH POSITIONS, PLEASE CONTACT: Prof. Gerd Kortuem Chair of Internet of Things E: G.W.Kortuem@tudelft.nl Or look at the website: ACADEMICTRANSFER.COM/NL/49135 ACADEMICTRANSFER.COM/NL/49136 HOW TO APPLY Applications should consist of a cover letter telling us about your motivation and suitability and a full curriculum vitae.
