1 In all departments interns will be closely supervised and work on very specific projects while being exposed to the inner workings of that department and the whole museum. EDUCATION AND INTERPRETATION Division: Education & Interpretation Supervisor: Emily Black, Interpretive Planner Department: Interpretation Title: Visitor Engagement Intern Visitor Engagement offers a Durwood paid internship to develop new innovative uses for the museum to engage visitors, perform visitor research, and experiment with unique projects. This intern will work closely with the Interpretive Planning department and cross-collaboratively with other departments in the museum. Specific projects include: Researching and testing evaluative tools for helping us understand how visitors are using the Creative Café. Test ways the space could better connect with the community. Perform visitor research on the current ways the Museum is engaging with audiences (comment books, touch screens etc.). Assist in the prototyping a new way to interact with the public. A people person! Someone who can truly enjoy talking to visitors about their museum experience. Has previous experience as a volunteer or intern in a cultural institution or art museum. Willingness to solve problems creatively. Good writing skills. An Art Education major or someone interested in learning more about the field of Museum Education and visitor engagement. Additional Notes This internship is for a truly self-motivated person with innovative ideas for making museums more welcoming and participatory spaces. Page 1

2 Division: Education & Interpretation Supervisor: Michele Boeckholt Department: Public Programs Title: Manager, Graphic Design Videographer Choose an item. Choose an item. offers one Fall Durwood Paid Internship with the intent of providing a Kansas City Art Institute student an opportunity to videotape and edit documentation of a variety of museum programming. Activities to be captured may include specific events, artist visits, classes, large-scale family days, etc. Some existing museum video may be assigned to this intern to be logged and edited. Final edited material may be suitable for FaceBook, Studio 33 (the museum s online portal to digital experiences), the museum s You Tube channel, or possibly Art Babble, an online museum/art forum. Open to all video students. Student must have own video camera. The museum has a computer station with a little editing software. Student may use their personal editing software and equipment or select to use the museum s editing area. Prefer flexibility in evening and weekend hours. Page 2

3 Division: Education & Interpretation Supervisor: Hilary Norholm Department: New Dimensions Title: Manager, New Dimensions Depending upon candidate, could emphasize technical skills or hands-on processes and teaching. New Dimensions is a unique program that offers projects for middle school and high school students that go beyond the one-time museum visit experience. Over the course of 4-5 museum visits students learn to look at, describe, analyze, and ultimately draw their own interpretations about a work of art. Projects culminate in the creation of a multimedia, digital storytelling project created on MacBook Pro computers in the studio classroom. Intern responsibilities may include assisting with teaching, leading students in visual thinking strategies, assisting with administrative tasks and helping with technology-based needs. Software Requirements: Both Mac and PC platforms with an emphasis on imovie and GarageBand. Familiarity with animation and filmmaking desirable. Page 3

The Family Programs Intern duties will include: assisting in developing, designing, planning, collaborating and producing creative and participatory family activities and resources. Other responsibilities will include administrative tasks and art materials preparation. This internship will provide experience in museum program planning. Open to all students. Spring semester. 6 PRESENTATION Division: Presentation Supervisor: Michele Boeckholt Department: Graphic Design Title: Graphic Design Intern Digital Image Library, Photography The digital image bank for the Nelson-Atkins is continually evolving. Photographs are taken of events, activities, galleries, the buildings and our various visitors in many types of experiences in the Museum setting. These images are then finessed and used in a variety of promotional applications: traditional print media, digital applications (such as the web and digital signage) and advertising. The selected intern will have working knowledge of photographic composition, advanced camera functions and an eye for capturing the perfect moment. Subjects may range from people to environments and from products to food. Interaction with visitors is likely; intern should possess comfort level for this activity. 7 Division: Presentation Supervisor: Michele Boeckholt Department: Graphic Design Title: Graphic Design Intern Signage, Digital Signage and Print Active Museum programming provides a constant stream of print and signage projects. Each job uses the Museum s brand identity and program s unique attributes to stimulate community awareness and participation. Specific applications may include: collateral materials, advertising, digital signage onsite, temporary signage for programs/exhibitions and/or permanent signage needs. Production design Fast-paced visual problem-solving skills in a wide range of communication vehicles using strong type and image skills are a must. Strong working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite. 8 Division: Presentation Supervisor: Clint Paugh Department: Exhibition Design-Fabrication Title: Fabrication Intern Fabrication Get the opportunity to work in a hands-on environment in the Museum s fabrication department. Utilize Conservation approved materials as you learn to build and finish museum quality casework. Gain a working knowledge of how to properly move/set museum furniture into its desired space; experience the problem solving involved in the fabrication process. You will get the opportunity to be exposed to the fabrication process from concept to completion. Woodworking/carpentry skills Division: Presentation Supervisor: Clint Paugh Department: Exhibition Design--Lighting Title: Lighting Intern Lighting The Museum houses many types of light fixtures and bulbs. To preserve artworks for future generations, light must be carefully deployed balancing the need to conserve with the need to view. Interns will assist the lighting team in lighting gallery spaces and Featured Exhibition spaces with direct and somewhat constant supervision. Learn about the exhibition design process by supporting our team: including exhibition designers, exhibition graphics and signage designers, a lighting designer and museum fabrications staff in their efforts to realize multiple exhibitions at various stages in the process from conceptual planning to installation. Aid designers to prepare files, organize exhibition information, create digital and 3-dimensional mock-ups, and investigate materials and finishes for current projects. See behind the scenes at the museum as you assist in the production of graphic components for exhibitions like object labels, exhibition plans and documentation, set up fixtures and help to light galleries, and prepare galleries and museum furniture for current and upcoming exhibits. Experience work in a dynamic environment that requires highly collaborative professional relationships to develop multifaceted creative solutions for large-scale, fast-paced and intensely precise projects. User of Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Word and Excel in Mac environment. Experienced user of printing and plotting equipment, digital cameras, and x-acto blades/mat cutters; Comfortable crawling in tight spaces, lifting up to 30 lbs., climbing to considerable heights and/or getting dirty on a few occasions. 10 Curatorial Division: Curatorial Supervisor: Nicole Myers, Assoc. Curator Department: European Painting and Sculpture Title: French Painting Catalogue Intern Research on the department s th c. French paintings for the French painting collection catalogue. Choose an item. Choose an item The Department of European Painting and Sculpture is seeking research and administrative assistance with our upcoming publication French Paintings: the Collections of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The catalogue will feature new research and scholarly essays on 103 paintings and pastels in our collection. The primary responsibilities of the French Painting Catalogue Intern will be to assist with the searching of journals, exhibition catalogues, and scholarly publications for references to NAMA paintings; photocopying and filing research documents in the departmental object files; and managing requests for books and articles via Inter Library Loan. Some data entry may also be needed. Candidates should have good research and organizational skills; experience with using online library catalogue systems (eg. WorldCat) and online journal databases (eg. JStor); and basic computer skills, such as using Microsoft Word and Excel. Preference will be given to students with knowledge and/or interest in Western art history, particularly French painting. ADDITIONAL NOTES Dress is business casual.
