7 The Journey so far ICT scenarios The CSIRO has defined forward-looking scenarios for South Australia to play a larger role in building an ICT industry to support the minerals and energy resources sectors through to Potential Scenarios The ICT Roadmap project aims to realise one of the South Australian Government s Seven Key Priorities; Realising the benefits of the mining boom for all. The objective was to facilitate discussion on the long-term goal of developing South Australia as the minerals and energy resource services centre of Australia. In line with this objective the CSIRO has constructed a series of high-level conceptual scenarios demonstrating the role of ICT in addressing key business drivers in the minerals and energy resources sectors to These were developed via literature reviews, analysis of R&D capabilities and stakeholder interviews. Approach Six scenarios for minerals and five scenarios for energy resources were constructed. Each of these scenarios were: Evaluated against the business need, impact on South Australia, technology maturity, current South Australian ICT and Defence industry capabilities, and South Australian research capabilities Aligned to key business drivers including productivity, cost reduction, health and safety, environmental impact and social license to operate Mapped to minerals and energy resources value chains Aligned to the six CSIRO megatrends * which are economic, environmental, social and technological shifts that have the potential to impact the resources sector between now and 2025: The innovation imperative From FIFO to LILO Tell me more Plugged in and switched on The knowledge economy E= MC 2 * Details of the six CSIRO megatrends can be found at: 6 DMITRE ICT Roadmap for Minerals and Energy Resources - Industry Roundtable

8 The Journey so far ICT scenarios The CSIRO identified 11 scenarios for South Australia to build a competitive ICT advantage by 2025 six in minerals and five in energy. ICT in Minerals Six potential scenarios for South Australia ICT in Energy Five potential scenarios for South Australia 7 DMITRE ICT Roadmap for Minerals and Energy Resources - Industry Roundtable

9 The Journey so far Drivers / Challenges The business drivers and challenges across the minerals and energy sectors showed that ICT can potentially affect all aspects of their value chains. Business Problems Interviews, workshops and surveys were used to understand current and mid-term business drivers and challenges across mining and energy resources industries. These business drivers and challenges were then aligned to the minerals and energy value chains, with the aim of developing a baseline for current and future industry challenges and an understanding of the demand side drivers and supply side capabilities that will support the sustainable growth of these important industries in South Australia. Many of these challenges could be addressed in the short term. It was evident that ICT can affect all aspects of the mining and energy value chains, and that increase in South Australia s ICT capabilities could lead to economic development across both sectors. Identified business drivers / challenges Cost: is one of the biggest business challenges driven by Australia s high cost structure and slowdown in capital acquisition programs. Decline in productivity: due to deeper natural resources, lower yielding resources, inadequate infrastructure, mismatch of labour and capital and commodity price volatility. Shortage of skills: due to the increased use of new, emergent technologies, and the need to relocate workers to remote areas. Economic uncertainty: slowing of China s economic growth has had an effect on commodity prices and corporate investment. 8 DMITRE ICT Roadmap for Minerals and Energy Resources - Industry Roundtable Capital project deceleration: exploration is increasingly becoming high risk and low return due to a decline in deposit grade and an increase in the depth of deposits being harvested. Health and safety: the nature of the industry and the remote locations of many operations drive a continuous need for enhancing safety management systems in order to build a safer work culture. Technology investment: Mining and energy companies are investing in technologies with the aim of improving operational efficiency and reducing labour costs. Deliver major projects on time and budget: effective execution of capital projects is essential. Late projects increase costs and delay income from projects. Optimise productivity: there has been a considerable decrease in the volume of resources; deeper resources, low yielding resources, inadequate infrastructure, mismatch of capital and labour, lumpy nature of investment, commodity price volatility. Creation of business case for new investment: there is a need for exploration efficiency to be enhanced to respond to global pricing complexity, high labour and construction costs, and to realise opportunities arising from innovation and technology advancement. Community engagement / Environment: there is a growing need for higher levels of transparency and environmental sustainability in addition to the standard practice of conducting an impact assessment.

12 Technology trends Discussions by Deloitte with key stakeholders in industry (supply and demand), research and government identified six key technology trends that were seen to be influential on the mining and oil & gas industries. Big Data Cloud Social Media Connectivity Mobile Automation Big Data: The volume of data captured from different areas in the mining and oil & gas value chains is increasing as the quantity, sensitivity and frequency of readings from sensors increases every year. This has made the ability to perform meaningful analysis on this data a key opportunity, including predictive analysis to help reduce maintenance and other causes of downtime. Cloud: As security around cloud based offerings increases, the attraction of cloud services will increase. This naturally complements remote operations, which are a key area for growth in the mining and oil & gas sectors. Social Media: There is an increasing opportunity to use social media to engage with the public to increase organisational transparency, which can decrease the regulatory burden on government and improve trust between industry and communities. A social licence to operate can also be used internally for staff communication and training, in particular where face to face contact is not possible. Connectivity: Society is trending towards connectivity and some form of computing embedded in almost everything. In mining and oil & gas, this includes tools and devices which are interconnected, with two way data feeds enhancing the capabilities of tools, and the quality of data being captured during use of the device. Mobile: Increasing adoption of mobile devices such as smartphones, toughbooks and smart handhelds is transforming mobile devices into the primary source of computing. Mobility impacts organisations from how to engage customers, to equipping employees with tools that help enable them to do their jobs more effectively. Automation: In the mining industry Remote Operation Centres (ROCs) reduce costs, increase safety, and improve productivity. In the Oil & Gas industry Digital Oil Fields of the Future will have significantly reduced employee numbers on site, and equipment and operations will be monitored and controlled from ROCs. 11 DMITRE ICT Roadmap for Minerals and Energy Resources - Industry Roundtable
